In some preferred embodiments the target adherent is a biological cell, but it can more generally be a biological or chemical species for which attachment at specific sites is desired. The method generally involves using a stamp to microcontact print a first type of molecule on the surface. With the stamp remaining in situ, the process then involves fluidic patterning of a second type of molecule through selected openings defined by selected recesses in the stamp and the surface itself. The second type of molecule should have an adhesion property relative to the target adherent that is complementary to that of the first type of molecule. The stamp is removed only after both the first and second types of molecules have been transferred to the surface.

Abstract: A brush applicator forms a tapered inner wall and inwardly extended flange inside of a nozzle, which secures either molded or crimped brush assembly. Two edge applicators apply a substantially uniform thin layer of adhesive or glue only on the edge surface of a workpiece. A first edge applicator applies glue through an exit and a second edge applicator has a roller with side flanges and with a reduced portion in-between. A flat surface applicator implements may have plural vanes and channels inside of two outer walls to distribute adhesive to a wider flat exit. A biscuit applicator applies glue on two side surfaces of elliptical slots that are formed by biscuit cutters. The glue flows through plural vanes or plural transversely positioned openings and passes to form two opposite layers of glue. A dowel applicator applies a thin substantially uniform layer of glue on the wall of a dowel-receiving hole prior to installation of dowel pins.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for forming a coating of a paint composition on a moveable substrate is disclosed. The method involves determining the volume flow rate of the paint composition that is required to form a desired wet film thickness for a given substrate speed and coating width and supplying the paint composition to a pool in the nip between an applicator roll and a metering roll or other suitable metering means at a flow rate that is substantially equal to the calculated flow rate, and then monitoring the level of the paint composition in the pool and adjusting operating parameters, such as the pressure between the rolls to maintain the paint composition level substantially constant.

Abstract: An adhesive layer is provided on a base material in the shape of an elongated film, powder particles are adhered thereon, and then other powder particles and media vibrated in a container are contacted with this adhesive layer. Next, the powder particles are embedded on the surface of the adhesive layer as a monolayer in which part of the powder particle protrudes, so as to form a laminate, and excess powder particles adhered to the laminate are removed. Therefore, a monolayer powder film, consisting of many powder particles embedded as a monolayer so that part thereof protrudes, is produced.

Abstract: An ion-exchange membrane may be continuously coated by depositing a catalyst composition on a release surface, drying the catalyst at an elevated temperature and then transferring the dried catalyst layer onto an ion-exchange membrane by applying pressure at a different elevated temperature. Also disclosed is an apparatus for thus continuously coating an ion-exchange membrane. The catalyst coated membrane is of particular use in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells for which a membrane electrode assembly may be prepared by bonding fluid distribution layers to the catalyst coated membrane.
