  • Patent number: 4339471
Abstract: A method for preparing an abrasive SiO.sub.x coating, wherein 1.ltoreq..times..ltoreq.2, on a substrate by glow discharge deposition wherein the deposition on the substrate in a vacuum chamber is interrupted before the desired final SiO.sub.x coating thickness is obtained. SiH.sub.4 and N.sub.2 O are subjected to a glow discharge and SiO.sub.x is deposited onto the substrate. The deposition is interrupted, SiH.sub.4 is removed from the vacuum chamber and the SiO.sub.x coating is exposed to oxygen. • Patent number: 4334948
Abstract: A method and apparatus for growing crystal ribbon from a liquid melt by the EFG technique includes the use of a die having a capillary feed passage adjacent the ribbon pulling mechanism and gas scrubbing passages on each side of the capillary feed passage. Thus, gas entrapped in the liquid melt can diffuse through the gas scrubbing passages to minimize the presence of microvoids in the ribbon. In a particular embodiment, the capillary die can include lateral communicating passages between the capillary feed passage and the gas scrubbing passage so that gas in the capillary feed passage can diffuse out to the gas scrubbing passage.

  • Patent number: 4334849
Abstract: An apparatus for molding recorded discs includes a pair of opposed mold plates at least one of which is adapted to move toward and away from the other. The mold plates have opposed surfaces which are adapted to form a mold cavity therebetween. A center plate is mounted in each of the mold plates with each center plate having a surface adjacent the opposed surface of the mold plate. One of the center plates has a passage therethrough with a center hole forming pin slidably mounted in the passage. The one center plate has an annular groove in the surface of the passage adjacent the end surface of the center plate. The groove is adapted to receive some of the molding material to form a seal between the center plate and the center hole forming pin and thereby minimize the extent of the formation of flash on the surface of the molded disc.

  • Patent number: 4333051
Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for determining the diffusion length of minority carriers in semiconductors using the constant-magnitude surface-photovoltage (SPV) method. A servo system maintains a constant predetermined value of the SPV. A novel capacitance-pickup electrode couples the SPV to a preamplifier in the measurement system and functions to reduce SPV drift. A keyboard or computer is used to select both the operating optical wavelength of an adjustable monochromator and a network to compensate for the wavelength dependent sensitivity of a photodetector used to measure the illumination intensity (photon flux) on the semiconductor. Measurements of the relative photon flux for a plurality of wavelengths are plotted against the reciprocal of the optical absorption coefficient of the material. A linear plot of the data points is extrapolated to zero intensity.

  • Patent number: 4332077
Abstract: A non-volatile memory structure of the floating gate type is described wherein current carriers are injected onto the floating gate from the control gate as distinguished from the prior art which injects current carriers into the floating gate from the substrate. This invention teaches that by tailoring the capacitance between the control gate and the floating gate and the capacitance between the floating gate and the substrate different field intensities are created in the region between the floating gate and the control gate and in the region between the substrate and the floating gate. When the field intensity across the capacitor formed between the control gate and the floating gate is greater than the field intensity across the capacitor formed between the floating gate and the substrate, current carriers will be injected onto the floating gate from the control gate.

  • Patent number: 4331938
Abstract: An improved semiconductor injection laser diode array having reduced interaction between the elements of the array. The array comprises a substrate, an active layer and a capping layer with a separate electrical contact to the capping layer for each element of the array and a common electrical contact to the substrate. The reduced interaction is obtained by regions of higher electrical conductivity extending through the substrate towards the p-n junction from those portions of the substrate surface opposed to the contacts to the capping layer and by separate electrical contacts to each of these higher conductivity regions. The higher conductivity regions provide a lower resistivity path for current flowing through the p-n junction, thus reducing current spreading.

  • Patent number: 4330915
Abstract: A technique for manufacturing a uniform configuration for at least two video disc styli, each stylus having a shank and a tip at one end of the shank, comprising the step of attaching an edge of a first plate of shank material to one edge of a strip of tip material different from the shank material, the strip having a face thereof oriented along a predetermined crystallographic plane. The strip is cut into the individual tips while the plate remains attached to the strip. The plate is then separated into the individual shanks to form the separate styli, whereby the orientation of the crystallographic plane with respect to the shank is uniform for all styli.

  • Patent number: 4330213
Abstract: Optical monitoring of the lateral dimensions of a pattern disposed on a substrate in the form of a wafer or mask is accomplished by testing for the lateral dimensions of a diffraction grating test pattern disposed adjacent the pattern. A beam of monochromatic light such as from a laser is diffracted by the test pattern and detectors determine the intensity of the diffracted beams. The detectors are disposed in a plane orthogonal to the plane of the test pattern and to the direction of the grating lines. The detectors are selectively spaced from each other according to the periodicity d of the grating and the width of the grating lines a is determined from a relationship of the detected intensities of the beams.
