  • Patent number: 5564296
Abstract: A kit for converting a key-in-knob lockset to a lever handle operated lock employs the existing cylindrical lock and its associated latch bolt. The conversion apparatus employs a lever handle having a non-circular shank portion which is received in, and thus drives, a resiliently biased coupling device which is interpositioned between the handle and a rose housing affixed to the door. The existing cylindrical lock is supported within the lever handle shank portion by a dummy bible member in such a manner as to prevent forces resulting from operation of the lever handle from damaging the cylindrical lock.

  • Patent number: 5565108
Abstract: A method of retarding the growth of algae in aqueous solution is disclosed. An aqueous medium is moved along a flow path in a direction terminating at an aqueous solution into which the aqueous medium is added. Before adding said aqueous medium into the aqueous solution, a gas stream having a nitrogen content in excess of 90% is injected into the aqueous solution in the same direction in which the aqueous solution is moved along the flow path. The gas stream is injected into the aqueous medium at a flow rate of at least 0.01 cubic feet per hour and said gas stream and said aqueous medium continue to intermix along said flow path prior to reaching the termination of the flow path at the aqueous solution.

  • Patent number: 5561292
Abstract: An enclosed ion source for generating substantially monoenergetic ions from a gaseous sample comprises a chamber into which the gaseous sample is introduced and which is substantially enclosed by a source block having two electron entrance apertures formed in it and by a source plate having one ion extraction aperture formed in it. Two filaments are disposed outside the chamber and adjacent the electron entrance apertures. The electron impact ion source is characterized by the provision of an electrically conductive shield which is disposed within the chamber and which defines an equipotential region. The electrons, generated from a heated filament, pass into the chamber through one of the electron entrance apertures. The shield allows the passage of molecules of the gaseous sample and the electrons into the equipotential region, so that electron impact ionization of at least some of the sample occurs in the equipotential region.

  • Patent number: 5556244
Abstract: The backing of a previously rounded book block is accomplished, while the book block is clamped between oppositely disposed gripping jaws, by subjecting the spine region of the book block to composite forces resulting from imparting a swinging motion along an arcuate path to a pressing beam carrier, to cause the pressing beam to bend the book block sheets outwardly away from the center line of the block, and superimposing tangential sliding motion on the pressing beam as it acts on the book block in the region adjacent the edges of the spine to thereby controllably form creases in the opposite sides of the block.

  • Patent number: 5556431
Abstract: An intervertebral disc endoprosthesis which is to be inserted between two vertebrae and has a bottom plate and a top plate which are to be connected to the endplates, facing them, of the vertebrae additionally has screw fastening facilities in order to increase the security of retention of the prosthesis. These screw fastening facilities are formed, for example, by in each case at least one borehole which runs essentially at right angles to the plane of the bottom or top plate and through which a bone screw can be inserted. The center of articulation of the prosthesis is displaced towards the rear relative to the center of the vertebral endplates in order to achieve a more favorable course of the force and, at the same time, to provide space in the ventral edge area to receive the bone screws.

  • Patent number: 5555891
Abstract: A vibrotactile stimulator system for detecting and interrupting apnea in premature neonates comprises a multi-sensing monitor for detecting the respiration and other physiological characteristics of the neonate, a vibrotactile sensory stimulator in contact with an extremity of the neonate and a computer interface functionally positioned between the monitor and the vibrotactile stimulator. The interface provides a comparison of the monitored data to preprogrammed individualized standards to determine variations from the standard and provides an intervention output signal to the vibrator. The stimulator includes a cutaneous vibrator engaging a peripheral sensory area of the neonate and being operable at a frequency up to about 400 Hz, but optimally about 260 Hz, to stimulate the neonate and interrupt an apneic episode. The system can include time-delayed, backup, audible and/or visual alarms as well as a graphic display with a pre-apneic printout and cribside or remote manual actuation capability.

  • Patent number: 5556112
Abstract: A shaft sealing ring comprising an annular holder (3) and an annular sealing section consisting of a sealing lip (4) extending to the surface (1) of the shaft against the pressure difference to be sealed and a radially extending connecting section (15) connecting the sealing tip (4) to the holder (3). The sealing tip (4) and the connecting section (15) are dimensioned so that their flexions to be expected under the pressure difference to be sealed exert a contrary affect upon the angle at which the sealing ring (4) is seated on the surface (1) of the shaft. This is made possible by the fact that at least one part (8) of the connection section (15) which is closer to the shaft surface (1) than another part (7) of the connection section (15) is deformed further towards the low-pressure side (PN) under the pressure difference to be sealed than the other part (7) of the connecting section.

  • Patent number: 5555849
Abstract: In order to maintain the flue gas temperature from a steam generator up to the temperature required for a NO.sub.x catalytic reactor during low load operations, the flow of feedwater through the steam generator economizer is controlled to control the degree to which the flue gas is cooled as it passes over the economizer heat exchange surface. More specifically, an economizer bypass line is provided and the flow of feedwater during low load operations through the bypass line and the economizer is regulated to maintain a desired flue gas temperature to the catalytic reactor. As the flue gas temperature changes with load, the flow through the economizer and bypass line is modulated to maintain a proper temperature. At full or near full load, the bypass line is fully closed.

  • Patent number: 5555718
Abstract: A combined cycle system has a gas turbine connected to a heat recovery steam generator and the heat recovery steam generator contains a selective catalytic reactor section wherein nitrogen oxides (NO.sub.x) are reacted with reactant gas such as ammonia or urea to produce molecular nitrogen and water vapor. The expanding transition section contains an array of flow profile control pipes extending across the section in a pattern which distribute the flue gas uniformly over the large cross-section of the heat transfer section. The reactant gas is injected into the flue gas stream through a series of nozzles spaced across the flow control pipes so as to uniformly mix and distribute the reactant gas in the flue gas stream before it enters the selective catalytic reactor section.

  • Patent number: 5554350
Abstract: A coal fired power plant includes the catalytic reduction of NO.sub.x in the flue gas and the catalytic oxidation of SO.sub.2 to SO.sub.3 followed by the hydration of the SO.sub.3 to H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 vapor and then the condensation to H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 liquid. The condensation takes place in a wet sulfuric acid condenser by heat exchange with incoming combustion air. A portion of the heat picked up by that combustion air is used to provide a portion of the heat for the condensate from the steam turbine. The combustion air is then fed to an air preheater and to the steam generator as primary and secondary combustion air.
