  • Patent number: 6475758
Abstract: Methods for acidification of soapstock using acids produced by fermentation with acidogenic bacteria and recovery of acidulated fatty acids are disclosed. Soapstock is advantageously acidified by fermentation of endogenous soapstock nutrients and added nutrients under controlled conditions using acidogenic bacteria. The nutrients may include carbohydrate, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur from defined or undefined sources. The acidification reaction avoids the use of strong acids for the treatment of soapstock, minimizes wastewater contamination with salts and produces potentially valuable by-products including lactic acid, acetic acid, glyceric acid and nutrient rich microorganisms.

  • Patent number: 6431104
Abstract: This invention relates to a shock absorbing docking spacer to space a tethered boat from dockside. It comprises an elongated body having two cylindrical sections moveable longitudinally of each other to define spacer length with one of said cylindrical sections being connectable to a boat and the other of said cylindrical sections being connectable to a dock. A resilient cord is connected at one of its ends to one of said cylindrical sections and at the other of its ends to the other of said cylindrical sections to be tensioned as the cylindrical sections move longitudinally of each other due to shock forces in use to reduce spacer length. The cord cord has a resilience as aforesaid to absorb shock forces on the boat that reduce the spacer length in use, and to reassert itself and restore spacer length when shock forces are removed.

  • Patent number: 6417159
Abstract: The present invention provides methods and compositions for enhancing the effect of a neurotrophin on a cell expressing a neurotrophin receptor. The effect is preferably neurotrophin-mediated growth and/or survival, such as neurite growth. The invention employees amphipathic compounds having a hydrophobic membrane-associating face and a hydrophilic face opposed thereto, which preferably mimic the amphipathic domain of the common neurotrophin receptor p75 from amino acid residue 367 to residue 379. Such compounds have charged moieties, polar moieties or combinations that mimic the charged and polar group relationships of p75NTR367-379, and include but are not limited to peptide analogues thereof. The hydrophobic membrane-associating face can interact with a membrane-bound neurotrophin receptor, such as TrkA, and the opposing hydrophillic face can interact with a DNA binding protein, such as nuclear transcription factor NFkB.
