  • Patent number: 6012395
Abstract: A baton projetile comprises a case (1) of low density polyethylene, and a core (2) of a soft material such as a thermoplastic gel modified rubber. An air gap (4) is optionally formed at the front end of the baton projectile between the core (2) and the case (1). Upon impact with a target at acceptable forces the air pocket (4) reduces the speed of sound of the impact shockwave to reduce the risk of unaccepeablc bone injury to the target. At higher than acceptable impact forces, the case (1) ruptures and the core (2) spreads out to radially disperse the excess impact energy and to present a larger impact area to the target so that the risk of unacceptable penetration and trauma injury to the target is reduced.

  • Patent number: 6000622
Abstract: A forced air furnace circulation fan controller adjusts the speed of the circulation fan according to the incidence of air delivery restrictions. Upon detecting insufficient air delivery as a function of the temperature of the furnace heat exchanger, the control system increases the circulation fan speed to increase the air delivery within the heating system. The controller utilizes fuzzy logic techniques to determine a speed adjustment for the furnace fan motor, based on the value of the furnace heat exchanger temperature. The use of fuzzy logic control allows the circulation fan controller to provide a highly adaptive response to changes in air delivery. The resulting balanced air delivery provides for efficient furnace operation and superior occupant comfort.

  • Patent number: 5990374
Abstract: An improvement to methods for heat treating flue gas cleaning residues (1) and residues from the industrial process generating said flue gases. For this purpose, the method comprises a physicochemical treatment step (2, 7), a heat treatment step (13) and a step involving treating gases generated by said heat treatment (19, 22, 28). These three steps are closely overlapped and combined both to minimise the volatilisation of volatile compounds during heat treatment and to remove separately the elements that cannot effectively be immobilised in the treated residue matrix during said heat treatment. The physicochemical treatment step may advantageously be combined with the wet cleaning step that may be included in the industrial process flue gas cleaning step. The method is particularly suitable for melting/vitrifying fly ash, agglomerating the finest fly ash, and destroying organic compounds such as dioxins and furans.

  • Patent number: 5984195
Abstract: Controllers for regulating fluid flow, and especially flow of liquid in supply lines, each of which include a valve assembly which is slidably positioned in a bore extending transverse to a fluid passageway extending through the body of the controller. Each controller includes a shaped memory alloy spring which is mounted so as to be in heat exchange relationship with fluid flowing therethrough. Each spring is mounted adjacent a stem of a valve and is operable when heated to a predetermined activation temperature to shift the valve assembly to at least partially close the fluid passageway. In some embodiments, the valve assembly is manually operable at temperatures below the activation temperature to regulate flow through the controllers. In other embodiments, the valve assembly is automatically shifted to open the fluid passageway through the body of the controller when temperatures decrease below the activation temperature.

  • Patent number: 5979132
Abstract: A skirting board or molding has a longitudinal channel for insertion of a decorative strip of wood. The wood strip being held frictionally within the channel. The board having holes extending therethrough and lying within the channel for receiving screws. The holes possessing counter bores so that the screws will lie flush along the bottom surface of the longitudinal channel. The wood strip may have a thickness less than the depth of the channel so as to create a profiled appearance.

  • Patent number: 5970190
Abstract: A grating-in-etalon wavelength division multiplexing device is disclosed. In one aspect the device includes an etalon structure with a single volume (or Bragg) diffraction grating, multiple superimposed volume diffraction gratings or a binary volume supergrating is interposed between the reflective opposed faces of the etalon. The etalon includes a tilt mechanism for tilting one or both of the reflective faces at a preselected angle with respect to each other from the parallel. A multiple wavelength light beam is directed through the volume grating in different preselected directions so that light of wavelengths satisfying the Bragg condition on each traversal of the grating is diffracted in a direction different from the direction of the incident beam. The diffracted beam exits the etalon and is wavelength interrogated in a detector while the undiffracted wavelengths propagate through the grating to be reflected from the opposed mirror face back through the volume grating.

  • Patent number: 5967409
Abstract: Temperature responsive valves for regulating fluid flow in a supply line such as to a showerhead or faucet wherein the valves include a slide valve assembly which is movably positioned within a bore extending in transverse communication with respect to a primary fluid passageway extending through the body of the valve between a fluid inlet and an outlet. Each valve further includes a pressure chamber in which the slide valve assembly is mounted which communicates with the fluid inlet. Temperature responsive force generators are used to control flow into the pressure chamber such that when the fluid temperature is above a predetermined temperature, the pressure within the pressure chamber increases, thereby forcing the slide valve assembly from an open to a closed position to thereby substantially terminate flow through the primary fluid passageway.
