  • Patent number: 5407459
Abstract: The present invention is concerned with a process for the preparation of sintered calcium aluminates that can generally be used as a protective cover for liquid metals, and particularly steel, and the process comprising the steps of mixing calcium oxide, or its precursor, particles and aluminum dross residue, such as NOVAL.TM.; calcining the resulting mixture; maintaining a calcining temperature of 1200.degree. C. or higher for approximately 5 minutes or more which is sufficient to form a friable sintered product rich in calcium aluminates; and recovering the sintered product after cooling. Optionally, calcium fluoride, or other fluoride can be added to the starting mixture, if it is not already contained in the dross residue.

  • Patent number: 5396995
Abstract: A hanging file frame is provided for holding and supporting a plurality of hanging file folders. The hanging file frame includes longitudinal beams which are supported by an upper beam clasping element and a lower support element. Connectors secure the upper beam clasping element to the lower support element. The upper beam clasping element opens to accept the longitudinal beams. In one embodiment, upon closure of the clasping elements, the longitudinal beams are pressed against the nibs, thereby securing the beams to the clasping elements. In another embodiment, the longitudinal beams are pressed against raised strips, thereby securing the beams to the clasping element. In another variation, a frame member is comprised of a pair of U-shaped members, each having a gripping section, and having horizontally extending legs coupled together by a positionally adjustable sleeve slidably movable along the legs.

  • Patent number: 5395524
Abstract: A filter for a refrigeration unit having a heat exchange fluid supply conduit. The filter is a substantially cylindrical filter screen having a radial flange disposed at each end. One or more filters are disposed along the entire length of the fluid supply conduit to maximize the surface area of the filter screen. Each radial flange has a gasket disposed thereon for providing a seal that prevents the fluid from circumventing the filter screen of the one or more filters. As fluid passes through the conduit, it flows radially through the filter along the entire length of the conduit thereby reducing the adverse effect on fluid pressure in the conduit and passes through the screen, into a volume defined exterior to the filter, thereby minimizing the pressure drop experienced along the fluid supply conduit.

  • Patent number: 5385096
Abstract: A contaminant removal head is disposed on a holder which is movable along a printing cylinder. The contaminant removal head includes a timing belt having a plurality of contaminant removal blades disposed at a predetermined pitch along the timing belt. The timing belt is rotatably disposed on a pair of spaced-apart timing pulleys driven by a motor that intermittently rotates the timing belt. A control unit controls the motor to position one of the contaminant removal blades adjacent the printing cylinder to remove contaminants therefrom. After contaminants have been removed from the printing cylinder, the motor rotates the timing belt to position a portion of the timing belt between adjacent contaminant removal blades adjacent the printing cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5384135
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of an alcohol-free pale beer (AFB) whose organoleptic properties are those of a lager beer, comprising the manufacture of a lager type alcoholic pale beer from pale malts containing 20 to 30% of brown malts, mashed to obtain a wort whose attenuation is of the order of 50% and the dealcoholization of the alcoholic pale beer, by evaporation, under high vacuum, of at least about 50% of the volume of this beer. The concentrate obtained by evaporation may be rediluted with water, flavored and sweetened until a concentration of 4.degree. Brix is obtained in order to produce the AFB. The concentrate may also be subjected to a second vacuum evaporation at a temperature of less than 60.degree. C. until a concentrate assaying between 45.degree. and 65.degree. Brix is obtained which is storable for several months before the redilution into an AFB.

  • Patent number: 5384293
Abstract: In order to provide a rare earth oxide-alumina type sintered body having no defect such as void and pore, and high strength, toughness and reliability, silica is added to a mixture of rare earth oxide and alumina to control a crystal grain size of the sintered body to not more than 30 .mu.m, whereby abnormal grain growth and occurrence of pore are restrained to produce a practically usable rare earth oxide-alumina-silica sintered body having excellent strength and toughness and uniform structure. According to this production method, rare earth oxide-alumina-silica sintered bodies having no defect such as void and pore, and high strength, toughness and reliability can easily be obtained.

  • Patent number: 5369586
Abstract: In order to control wheel spin in a vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine, a spin calculator determines the amount of wheel spin and compares this with a target value. If the target value is exceeded, an engine controller reduces engine output demand, for instance by reducing the opening of a throttle. A fuelling controller forms a threshold value which is inversely dependent on the difference between the reduced engine output demand and the actual engine output demand. When the wheel spin exceeds the threshold value, the controller cuts off the supply of fuel for a predetermined pattern of engine fire events.
