  • Patent number: 7016779
Abstract: There is described a method for controlling a system, for example a Diesel engine, that is subject to transient changes of target outputs. The target outputs specify outputs required from the system. “Steady state” information is used to give optimum inputs for the system when the target outputs are substantially constant. A model of the system is used to predict the outputs of the system in response to candidate new values for the inputs of the system. The method combines the steady state information with the predicted response of the system to determine inputs to the system which will cause the system outputs to match the target outputs as closely as possible. For each candidate (in one embodiment), the method calculates the difference between the steady state inputs and a candidate, and the difference between the target outputs and the predicted outputs that would result from the adoption of that candidate, to determine an optimum candidate which is then used to update the inputs to the system.

  • Patent number: 7010076
Abstract: Improved phase locked loops are described which handle momentary breaks in an input communication channel. The phase locked loops provide the capability to “hold” the output clock in a communication system at or very near the last output frequency before the loss of input data. Such phase locked loops include a differential phase detector, an electronic selector circuit, and an operational amplifier based loop filter circuit. The electronic selector circuit provides the differential output of the phase detector at a pair of inputs to the operational amplifier. A voltage controlled oscillator is coupled to an output of the operational amplifier and provides an output frequency for the phased locked loop circuit. The electronic selector circuit is operable to control the input to the operational amplifier to hold an output frequency of the voltage controlled oscillator at a substantially constant frequency.

  • Patent number: 7002898
Abstract: A system is described which provides bidirectional transport of data at different data rates for each direction over a shared medium. In one embodiment, the different data rates are accomplished using different modulation techniques. For example, in the downstream direction, quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) 64 is used and in the upstream direction orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is used. The QAM 64 modulation provides for a higher number of bits per hertz in a transmission channel. By using QAM 64 modulation, down stream transmission rates on the order of 30 megabits per second (Mbps) in a 6 MHz channel can be achieved. A number of 6 MHz channels can be combined to provide for even higher data rates.

  • Patent number: 6988207
Abstract: A circuit that uses a bi-directional buffer as follows: First a tri-state output buffer is connected to a functional clock and a bi-directional port is connected to a test clock. The bi-directional buffer is configured to receive control signals to selectively block and unblock the tri-state output port connected to the functional clock. In addition, the bi-directional port connected to a test clock is connected to the internal logic of the device. When the tri-state output buffer connected to the functional clock is blocked, the test clock transmits a clock signal to the internal logic of the device. When the tri-state output buffer connected to the functional clock is unblocked, the functional clock transmits a clock signal to the internal logic of the device.

  • Patent number: 6980565
Abstract: A method for controlling the data rate of a virtual connection. Data packets are received for transmission on the virtual connection. The method comprises buffering the data packets in a buffer. A counter signal is generated to indicate the beginning of timeslots in a measurement window. The number of timeslots needed to transmit the data packets with a selected data rate is determined. The method further accesses data from at least one table to determine the spacing between timeslots in the measurement window used to request access to a data bus based on the number of timeslots needed to achieve the selected data rate. Further, access to a data bus for the data packets in the buffer is requested based on the data accessed from the table. The method further transmits the packets when access to the bus is granted.

  • Patent number: 6977540
Abstract: A port isolator apparatus includes an optical isolator circuit that electrically isolates an input circuit from a high-speed output circuit. The input circuit uses a transistor to control the current flow of a data signal into the optical isolator.
