  • Patent number: 4145457
Abstract: A method for the production of optical directional couplers has a substrate with optical waveguides formed in a surface thereof which are longitudinally coupled by having the guides extend parallel to each other for a predetermined distance. The waveguides have a higher index of refraction than the substrate. By ion implantation step, the area of the substrate adjacent the surface which is covered has its index of refraction raised, while at the same time, the exposed areas which will form the waveguides is also subjected to the ion bombardment. Thereafter, by a second ion implantation step, the ions penetrate further into the region of the substrate where the waveguides are being formed to raise the index of refraction thereof. By this technique, narrow low-light-loss bends are produced.

  • Patent number: 4145657
Abstract: A radio transmission system in which two subscribers use only one of possibly several frequency channels for a mutual connection is characterized in that in the individual frequency channel which is provided for the connection of the two subscribers the information flow of the subscriber transmitting at a particular moment in time is interrupted in, preferably, regular time intervals for a very short time in comparison with the transmission time in order to establish a return connection, in the manner of a time slot channel, having a low transmission capacity in comparison to the actual frequency channel. In this time slot channel, information of the return connection is transmitted.

  • Patent number: 4145039
Abstract: A method of conveying sheets of e.g. corrugated cardboard through a processing machine, comprising a feed-in unit and units for carrying out printing, punching, slotting etc. of the sheet, in which the sheet is gripped between a belt with a flat gripping surface and a belt with a non-planar gripping surface disposed at a distance from each other, which distance is smaller than the thickness of the sheet, so that the non-planar belt clamps the sheet securely against the flat belt while deforming the sheet. Apparatus for carrying out said method has conveyor and support means for the sheet. The conveyor means has two cooperating belts one of which is a flat toothed belt running over two deflecting rollers one of which is forcibly driven. The second conveyor belt is non-planar and disposed at a distance smaller than the thickness of the sheet from the flat belt and runs over freely journalled deflecting and supporting rollers which oppose the corresponding rollers for the flat belt.

  • Patent number: 4144734
Abstract: A die holder has adjacent to its front end an annular step portion comprising a steep wall and a gradual wall tapered from the steep wall to the front end, the annular step portion being adapted to provide an annular space between the step portion and an inner surface bounding a billet receiving bore in a container when the die holder is inserted in the bore. During indirect extrusion, foreign impurities such as dirt, lubricant, metal oxides, and the like deposited between the bore surface and the billet are trapped and collected in the annular space against entrainment into an extruded product being formed. An annular ring partly defining the steep wall acts as a barrier that prevents the impurities from getting therepast and minimizes skull formation on the bore surface. An annular butt formed by accumulations of the impurities in the annular space and a butt end of the billet are removed from the container by means of a shear.

  • Patent number: 4144526
Abstract: A circuit arrangement and process is provided for converting an analogue signal into a digital signal or converting a digital signal into an analogue signal. The circuit arrangement has first and second capacitances with a charge transfer device between the capacitances for providing a stepped exchange of charge therebetween. For analogue to digital conversion, a device is provided which brings the second capacitance to a given charge state for each step exchange. An evaluation device evaluates the charge state of the second capacitance for each stepped exchange until the charge on the second capacitance is below a given level. A counting device counts each of the stepped exchanges of charge such that the total count provides the corresponding digital signal. For digital to analogue conversion, in one embodiment a charge is placed on the second capacitance. The charge transfer device then removes equal quantities of charge in a plurality of steps and transfers this charge to the first capacitance.

  • Patent number: 4143455
Abstract: Semiconductor components, as for LSI-circuits are produced in such a manner that epitaxial layers as well as buried layers are dispensed with while an increased manufacturing yield and an increased structural packing density is achieved via an oxide insulating technique. The process involves applying and structuring a first insulating layer, such as composed of Si.sub.3 N.sub.4, onto a semiconductor substrate having a first zone of one conductivity type therein, etching insulating grooves into the substrate areas not covered with the first insulating layer and filling such grooves with a second insulating layer, such as composed of SiO.sub.2, which is thicker than the first insulating layer, and then emplacing the various semiconductor structures at select surface areas between spaced-apart areas of the second insulating layer so as to complete the semiconductor structure.

  • Patent number: 4143445
Abstract: In the illustrated embodiment, a patient fixation strap is releasably secured to a roller which is freely rotatable on the shaft of a control handle. A spring is coiled on a stationary stop and has one end engageable with the roller so that a slight rotation of the roller due to strap tension wraps the spring tightly on the stop to hold the strap. If the handle is turned to further increase strap tension, an entrainment member fixed to the shaft engages the roller and moves the roller against the spring end in the spring unwinding direction to release the stop. If the handle is turned to release strap tension, the same entrainment member acts on the opposite end of the spring in the spring unwinding direction. Thus tension and release of the strap can be accomplished with one hand.

  • Patent number: 4143980
Abstract: A shifting arrangement is provided for the exact space positioning of a writing carriage for office, teletype or data typewriters in which the writing carriage is moved step-by-step alongside of a record structure in accordance with a predetermined character positioning pattern. The writing carriage is driven by a stepping motor which has a rotary field. A specific number of angle positions of the stepping motor field serve as basic advance positions of the stepping motor in order to compensate for the load angle of the stepping motor during running of the writing carriage. Such basic advance positions are assigned to each character positioning point of the positioning pattern. An electronic device is provided for triggering the rotary field of the stepping motor and automatically adjusting this rotary field to the corresponding basic advance position during running and setting the field to a rest position during stopping of the stepping motor in order to correct for the stepping motor load angle.

  • Patent number: 4144450
Abstract: An X-ray powder diffractometer and associated computing system is disclosed for diffraction analysis of samples by the generation of an intensity diagram. A detector having a position sensitive element is advanced along an arc over a desired angle by a step motor. A control circuit connected to the step motor produces impulses corresponding to advancement of the step motor. These impulses are continually summed as an indication of the current position of the detector along the arc. The position sensitive element in the detector produces position signals corresponding to the position at which the detected X-rays strike the element. These position signals are digitallized. The position address is added to the sum of the impulses from the step motor control means to produce a composite sum which is indicative of the precise angle at a given moment at which an X-ray photon is detected by the sensitive element in the detector. As the detector moves along the arc, the composite sum is continually updated.
