Abstract: A method for determining a value of absolute reflectance of a material at a predetermined wavelength, in the ultraviolet range from its measured reflectance which includes system losses contributed by optics, illumination sources, detectors, etc. The method involves the measurement of reflectance from a known material such as single crystal silicon whose absolute reflectance is well known, dividing the measured value by the absolute value to obtain a system efficiency coefficient at the known wavelength and then, without changing the illumination or optics, measuring the reflectance of the unknown material and applying this coefficient to this measured value to obtain its absolute value.
Abstract: A scoop for the collection and disposal of animal feces includes a rectangular metal sheet formed into a "V" with a pivoting elongated handle on a top leg of the "V" and a resilient member connected to one interior surface of the top leg and contacting the interior of the lower leg for grasping the closed end of a plastic bag, the open end of which is brought out and around the "V" and secured to a rubber disc by either a clip on a cord or, if plastic grocery or merchandise bags are used, by the handles on the bags. The bags can readily be removed, tied closed, and disposed of without danger of physical contact with the contents.
Abstract: An elongated strip of pliable resilient plastic for covering a patient's orthodontic brackets and wire reduces chafing and injury to the interior of the patient's mouth from sharp edges. The cover strip is attached to the wires between the orthodontic brackets by thin plastic wire locks on the rear surface of the strip and having horizontal wire engaging slits.
Abstract: A simulated auto theft alarm in which a LED mounted in a vehicle instrument panel is coupled to a simple circuit that causes the LED to flash at a rate comparable to those of conventional auto alarm systems whenever the ignition is OFF and to remain OFF whenever the ignition is ON.
Abstract: A box intended to be submerged within a home aquarium contains a platform for supporting small pet crabs in a dry environment. The box, completely open at the bottom, loosely fits over the platform and receives pumped air which leaks into the aquarium from below platform level. At one end of the platform is a ladder formed of a plastic sheet containing a plurality of holes that enable the crabs to climb upon the platform from the bottom of the aquarium. The box, platform and base upon which it stands are easily disassembled.
Abstract: A portable clothes closet designed to provide extra storage in small homes or recreation vehicles is tall, narrow and thin so that it could fit behind a door. The closet is fitted with a pivoting trouser hanger that is held up in a horizontal position by the open door, a pivoted shirt hanger for about a dozen shirts and both tie and belt racks.
Abstract: One or more rotating augers with drilling heads are aligned within a rectilinear casing with a rectilinear cutting head defining one of a plurality of adjacent vertical slots that may be excavated to within about one inch of an adjacent structure or property without encroaching. When a slot is completed it is filled with either a precast or poured-in-place wall element, a plurality of adjacent elements being joined at the edges to form a solid wall without need for forms and shoring or underpinning of the adjacent property or structure.
Abstract: A soft, resilient, silicone rubber sheath for covering each of the cold metal blades of a vaginal speculum reduces the shock of an often painful examination and a possible long-lasting emotional shock to adolescent patients.
Abstract: Elastic cord interconnected blocks in which each block contains a plurality of deep slots cut to a centrally positioned interior washer-like connecting element having a hole coaxial that can freely pass the elastic cord. The element hole is coaxial with an axial hole formed in the block by the spacing of adjacent block segments, the segment having a spacing for passing a stretched elastic cord and for locking the cord in its relaxed state. Unusual shapes can be formed with several interconnected blocks.
Abstract: A set of lottery game dice to aid in selecting six numbers between "one" and "forty-nine" to "fifty-three" are regular decahedron shaped. The total of the numbers displayed on the six dice are obtained by using some dice having eight surfaces displaying numbers and some displaying nine numbers. The dice are formed by providing one or two of the ten surfaces with an extending convex numbered surface to prevent the die from settling on that surface, thus eliminating one or two available surfaces for display.
Abstract: A catheter and fluid pumping apparatus and the method for bypassing portions of the heart to temporarily reduce the work load on the heart muscle. A double tube catheter is introduced into the femoral vein or artery and is advanced into the ventricle where blood is drawn and mechanically pumped back into the heart at a position downstream, such as the aorta or the pulmonary artery. The desired cardiac circulation can be maintained while relieving the load on the heart muscle to enable it to rebuild its strength.
Abstract: A tubing plug for temporarily sealing flared end tubing includes an adjustable, locking jaw pliers such as a Vise-Grip type having a plate secured to each jaw. One plate is slotted to receive and hold the end of the flared tubing; a resilient neoprene cone is attached to the other plate with the apex of the cone aligned with the bore of the tubing.
Abstract: Apparatus for attaching an ornamental wheel cover to a vehicle having an extending cylindrical wheel hub. A ring having several attached legs or claws is secured to the hub by overlying the legs on the hub and clamping them in place. In one embodiment the wheel cover is removably attached to the ring with an open circular spring having a plurality of outwardly extending points that engage aligned slits in the ring and a central cup in the wheel cover. In a second embodiment, outwardly bent tabs with threaded holes on the ring are aligned with screw holes in the face of the wheel cover so that ring and wheel cover are interconnected by screws.
Abstract: A shell-shaped lotion applicator, particularly for beach use, includes a lotion bottle containing a self-rewinding spool having thereon a elongated saturable wick with one end attached to the spool and the other end attached to the bottle stopper which is also a handle formed as a part of the shell.
Abstract: Ornamental auto wheels mounted with conventional lug bolts or nuts and designed to be used without wheel covers are provided with ornamental wheel covers that cover only the lugs and hub area to discourage theft of the wheels. The end of a threaded shaft is attached to the center of an elongated bar which may pass through the hub hole at an angle and which is axially locked in the hub hole and against the rear surface of the wheel by a front plate screwed onto the shaft. The wheel cover to be mounted has a flanged tubular shaped nut retaining cup which has a central hole that will pass only the smaller diameter of two diameters of a locking nut which is threaded onto the shaft to secure the wheel cover to the wheel. The larger outer end of the nut closely fits within the larger diameter of the retaining cup, the outwardly extending flange of which prevents its passage through the wheel cover.
