Abstract: An improvement in the process for the gasification of a solid fuel wherein the solid fuel is at least partially oxidized at a temperature above the melting point of ash of the solid fuel and at a pressure of 10-200 bar where the resultant synthesis gas is thereafter cooled in the presence of combustion residues of the solid fuel, and the combustion residues are thereafter discharged directly, the improvement residing in carrying out the gasification in a gasification zone disposed vertically over and in fluid communication with a radiation zone comprising cooling surfaces, the radiation zone have disposed at the bottom thereof and in fluid communication with the radiation zone a water containing bath. The radiation zone is cylindrical or conical, widens by 0 to 15 degrees towards the bottom, is made in a finned wall construction with a relation of height to diameter of .ltoreq.6:1 and comprises cooling surfaces.

Abstract: A system and method for removing material from the surface of a sample comprising: a high-frequency plasma produced in front of the sample surface; a metallic shield electrically insulated from the sample and provided with an opening determining the area to be removed, disposed between the sample and the high-frequency plasma. The parameters of this arrangement are chosen so that the relationU.sub.2 =(U.sub.1.sup.3/4 +D/C).sup.4/3with ##EQU1## holds, wherein: U.sub.2 =Potential difference applied between sample and plasma;D=spacing of sample surface from shield;.epsilon..sub.O =dielectric constant of vacuum;n=density of plasma;e.sub.o =elementary charge;k=Boltzmann constant;T.sub.e =electron temperature;p0 M.sub.i =atomic mass of the species of ions (plasma ions) used;m.sub.e =electron mass; and.pi.=3.14.
Abstract: A device for heating blood for transfusion is disclosed which has two vertically disposed opposed electrical heating plates which engage the opposite faces of a flat bag of flexible plastic material delimitating a fluid path therethrough which has a width progressively increasing from a lower inlet pipe for connection to a blood supply to an elongated single rectilinear main portion of uniform width and progressively decreasing from the elongated main portion toward an upper outlet pipe for connection to injection means. A flow restricting means is disposed therein on an intermediate level between the inlet pipe and the main portion of the fluid path to restrict the travel of fluid introduced by the inlet pipe and produce a substantially homogeneous flow all across the main portion of the fluid path. The heating plates include heat radiating fins or corrugations to reduce thermal inertia as the rate of blood flow changes.
Abstract: Briquettes made of mainly coal are described to which there has been added 10 to 30% by weight of ash (other than ash which is contained in the coal normally). The briquettes formed from such a mixture have strength which permits them to be subjected to gasification or carbonization in a fixed bed. Also described is a method for forming the briquettes.
