  • Patent number: 4394910
Abstract: A shelf for an order picking system includes a rectangular frame having front and rear rails with upwardly facing bottom support surfaces and uniformly spaced notches along the length thereof above the support surfaces. Track members extending across the frame between the rails have bottom end portions supported on the support surfaces and have end edge portions received in certain of the notches. The track members are selectively adjustable to different positions by placing the track member end edges in different notches.

  • Patent number: 4393957
Abstract: Truck hunting is eliminated in railway vehicles by applying a low coefficient of friction material to the vehicle wheels so that a lubricating film is provided between the vehicle wheels and the rail on which they ride which serves to increase the critical speed of a rail vehicle, i.e., the speed at which truck hunting occurs, to a value above its operating speed.

  • Patent number: 4389253
Abstract: In discarding the used ion exchange resin by the demineralizer provided in the cooling system of an atomic reactor, the radioactivity-rich ion exchange resin and the radioactivity-rich crud can be treated separately by introducing 0.5% by weight of sodium hexamethaphosphate into a slurry of the ion exchange resin, irradiating supersonic of 20 to 60 kHz in frequency to the slurry of the ion exchange resin and removing the radioactive crud from the ion exchange resin.

  • Patent number: 4387586
Abstract: A method and apparatus for rolling a rolled material widthwise thereof wherein the rolled material in the form of a flat metal which may be a slab of metal having a large width as contrasted with the thickness has its lengthwise end portion shaped by compression working while the rolled material remains stationary in such a manner that the lengthwise end portion is formed with a progressively reducing width portion in which the width is progressively reduced in going toward the end of the rolled material, and a uniform width portion contiguous with the progressively reducing width portion and having a width equal to the minimum width of the progressively reducing width portion between its end contiguous with the progressively reducing width portion and the end of the rolled material. Thereafter, the rolled material is subjected to widthwise rolling, whereby the fishtail produced at the end of the rolled material can be greatly diminished.

  • Patent number: 4386700
Abstract: A plurality of identical open top containers may be vertically stacked or vertically adjacent containers may be rotated 180.degree. relative to a vertical axis and nested, for the transport of items, such as fish, involving liquid that is desirably drained from each container. Drainage from one container into a lower container and therefore contamination of the lower container is prevented by drain holes in each of the stacking feet communicating directly with the upper inlet end of a downwardly and outwardly sloping channel in the support portion of the next lower container, in the stacked position, with an integral flange extending continuously around the entire top periphery of each box overlying the channel for strength and continuity.

  • Patent number: 4383888
Abstract: In the concentration of radioactive combustible waste comprising evaporating and drying a radioactive combustible waste slurry by a thin film drier, the radioactive combustible wastes and an incombustible material, such as sodium sulfate, etc. obtained from a nuclear reactor effluent are mixed together in an amount of not more than 70% by weight, preferably 43 to 70% by weight, of radioactive combustible waste on the basis of a mixture on dry basis, and the mixture is fed to the thin film drier and evaporated and dried therein. A risk of powder explosion and fire is prevented in the drying step thereby.

  • Patent number: 4383614
Abstract: A track member having a bottom end portion resting on an upper surface of a support flange has a clip member slidably attached thereto for movement between a locking position and a releasing position for respectively preventing or permitting upward movement of the rail end portion with respect to the support flange. In the locking position of the clip member, a projecting tongue engages the bottom surface of the support flange opposite from the upper surface area on which the track member bottom end portion is supported. In the releasing position of the clip member, the tongue is clear of the support flange.

  • Patent number: 4382745
Abstract: A method of controlling wicket gates of a pump-turbine which prevents abnormal hydraulic pressure variation when load carried on the pump-turbine is removed during the turbine operation thereof. The wicket gates are controlled to open when it is detected that discharge per unit head reduces with the reduction of speed per unit head. When it is once detected that the ratio of variation in the discharge per unit head to the variation in the speed per unit head is reversed from a positive value to a negative value, the wicket gates are closed.

  • Patent number: 4381738
Abstract: Adjacent expansible chambers of an engine are provided with an intake runner set employing at least three runner passages conducting the working fluid from a common plenum to the expansible chambers, with at least one of the runners only serving one of the expansible chambers, at least another of the runners serving only the other expansible chamber, and at least still another of the runners commonly serving both of the expansible chambers. Preferably, a flow control is provided for one or more of the runners, preferably the common runner to manually or automatically control the flow of fluid through the common runner. Thereby, the runners for the expansible chambers may be adjusted in effective cross sectional area for tuned efficiency at different speeds. Preferably, such runners extend through the intake manifold and head ports without communication throughout their extent. The partitions forming the runners may be removable so that others of different shape or location may be substituted.

  • Patent number: 4379508
Abstract: Each tray in a plurality of 90 degree nestable and stackable trays is formed with a specific key portion along the upper edge of the end walls and a corresponding specific groove and web structure along the lower edge of the end walls. A first group of trays has a specific key structure different from a second group of the trays, each group of trays having its own key structure. Trays of a first group cannot be stacked in vertical alignment with trays of the second group, since the key structure of the first group is adapted to be received by the web structure of the first group, and not by the web structure of the second group, and vice versa.

  • Patent number: 4379503
Abstract: One or more of the rollers of a gravity rollerway conveyor has an annular outer tire forming the load support surface, which tire is assembled on the hub of the roller by first being turned inside out from its normal relaxed position and then being stretched over the hub that has a larger outer diameter than the tire inner diameter, so that the tire is pretensioned at its outer surface and precompressed at its inner surface to result in a significant decrease in the rolling resistance at substantially zero speed over a wide range of load values. The assembled tire has a central inner flange clamped in complementary recesses in the hub halves to prevent tire rotation.

  • Patent number: 4370262
Abstract: A catalytic structure for treating exhaust gases is provided which is obtained by spraying molten aluminum onto the surface of a substrate such as wire netting, expanded metal, etc. in the presence of oxygen, to form on said surface of a substrate a roughened surface through deposit of fine aluminum particles thereon and also an aluminum oxide layer on said roughened surface, and adhering onto this layer a catalytic substance such as a catalyst for reducing nitrogen oxides. The catalytic structure has a high catalyst-retainability to prevent the catalyst from readily peeling off from the surface even when a mechanical impact is applied thereto. Further it exhibits a superior corrosion resistance even in a corrosive environment containing sulfuric acid; hence it is suitably employed for the apparatuses for treating exhaust gases containing nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides.

  • Patent number: 4364489
Abstract: A stacking container having a bottom and two pairs of opposed side walls, a cover comprising two portions hinged to one pair of opposed side walls, the opposed lateral edges of each cover portion engaging the upper edges of the other pair of opposed side walls of the container when in closed position, the outer free edges of the cover portions meeting, when the cover is in closed position, to present a flat upper surface of the cover. The free edges of the cover portions are crenellated, with a plurality of spaced teeth having recesses therebetween, to interfit one with the other when closed. Each of at least a plurality of teeth and corresponding recesses are configured to interengage when the cover portions are closed to inhibit lateral separation of the cover portions one from the other. Each cover portion is sealable one on each of the other pair of opposed side walls.
