  • Patent number: 6985515
Abstract: A code division multiple access communication system transmits a pilot and traffic signal over a shared spectrum. The pilot and traffic signal have an associated code and are received over the shared spectrum. The received signals are sampled and the samples are delayed to produce a window. A weighted value for each despread pilot code window sample is determined using an adaptive algorithm. Each window sample is despread with a traffic code. Each despread traffic code window sample is weighted according to a weight corresponding to its respective pilot code sample.

  • Patent number: 6985020
Abstract: An inline predistortion circuit for producing composite second order (CSO) and composite triple beat (CTB) distortion correction of a laser transmitter is disclosed having an RF input signal, a diode for producing nonlinear current, and a DC voltage bias for controlling the nonlinear current. The predistortion circuit lacks DC blocking capacitors between the RF attenuator and the diode, which results in improved nonlinear current generation across a wide frequency range. A capacitor in parallel with the bias circuit further increases diode's capability for producing nonlinear current. A low resistance resistor in series with the RF signal path and in parallel with the diode provides the voltage necessary for the diode to conduct while minimizing RF signal attenuation. An inductor in series with the RF signal provides improved phase correction of the CSO and CTB predistortion circuit.

  • Patent number: 6985457
Abstract: A UE system implements dynamic link adaptation by adding or changing control information to notify a receiver which timeslots and codes are currently active and which timeslots should be avoided. The UE provides synchronization such that the receiver knows which timeslots and codes the UE has used to map the coded composite transport channel onto physical channels. The UE attempts to avoid the timeslots which are experiencing transmission difficulties, while attempting to utilize the timeslots which are not experiencing transmission problems.

  • Patent number: 6985413
Abstract: An optical storage system includes a pickup head for picking up data from a storage medium. Firstly, the maxima of a tracking error signal and runout are obtained in a calibration procedure in a close loop formed by an optical pickup head, a pre-amplifier, a compensator, a band-pass filter and a maximum detector. A calibration factor is then defined and derived by using the obtained maxima and nominal factors of a power amplifier and the optical pickup head of the optical storage system. The path formed by the series-connected band-pass filter and maximum detector is then disabled, while the calculated calibration factor is then stored in the compensator. The optical storage system may operate in a close loop formed by the optical pick head, pre-amplifier, compensator, a power amplifier under a normal operation procedure so that the optical storage system may record or read data onto/from an optical disc under the compensation provided by the calibration factor.

  • Patent number: 6985467
Abstract: A method and system for rapidly acquiring a spreading code, used in a code division multiple access (CDMA) system. A first long code and a second long code, with each long code having a length of N chips, are generated. The first long code is different from the second long code. The first long code and the second long code are transmitted at a first phase angle and at a second phase angle, respectively, on a carrier signal, over a communications channel using radio waves. The first long code and the second long code may be transmitted at an in-phase (I) angle and at a quadrature-phase (Q) angle, respectively, on the carrier signal. From the communications channel, an I-phase acquisition circuit and a Q-phase acquisition circuit may acquire, in parallel, the first long code and the second long code from the I-phase angle and the Q-phase angle, respectively, of the carrier signal by searching, in parallel, N/2 chips, the first long code and the second long code.

  • Patent number: 6983009
Abstract: An improvement for a method and system for tracking a spreading code, used in a code division multiple access (CDMA) system. An input signal has spread-spectrum modulation. The spreading code embedded in the spread-spectrum modulation has a plurality of chips. The input signal is sampled, and half-chip offset samples are formed from the sampled input signal. An even set of the half-chip offset samples are grouped into an early set of samples, and an odd set of the half-chip offset samples are grouped into a late set of samples. Each early set of samples is multiplied by the spreading code c(n+1), c(n+2), . . . , c(n+L), to generate a first plurality of products. L is approximately equal to the number of chips of delay between the earliest and latest multipath signals. A first plurality of sums and magnitudes are computed from the first plurality of products. The first plurality of magnitudes are summed to generate an early signal-energy value.

  • Patent number: 6978843
Abstract: A well configuration and method of increasing production from a hydrocarbon well having pre-existing production tube. A composite velocity string having an outer diameter smaller than the inner diameter of the production tube is installed in the production tube so that an annular gap is formed between the outer surface of the velocity string and the inner surface of the production tube. Production from the well is increased because the coefficient of fluid flow friction through the composite velocity string, and the amount of heat loss through the composite velocity string, are reduced compared to a steel velocity string. Installation efficiency is also increased because the composite velocity string is much lighter than a steel velocity string.

  • Patent number: 6980538
Abstract: A system and method reduces the time required by a base station to acquire a fixed subscriber unit in a CDMA communication system by virtually locating of the subscriber units. A base station acquires subscriber units by searching only those code phases concomitant with the largest propagation delay possible in the cell, as if all subscriber units were located at the periphery of the cell. A subscriber unit which has never been acquired by the base station varies the delay between the PN code phase of its received and transmitted signals over the range of possible delays in a cell and slowly ramps-up its transmission power until it is acquired by the base station. Upon initial acquisition by the base station, the subscriber unit ceases ramping-up its transmission power, ceases varying the delay and internally stores the final value of the delay in memory.
