Abstract: A composite beamforming technique is provided wherein a first communication device has a plurality of antennas and the second communication has a plurality of antennas. When the first communication device transmits to the second communication device, the transmit signal is multiplied by a transmit weight vector for transmission by each the plurality of antennas and the transmit signals are received by the plurality of antennas at the second communication device. The second communication device determines the best receive weight vector for the its antennas, and from that vector, derives a suitable transmit weight vector for transmission on the plurality of antennas back to the first communication device. Several techniques are provided to determine the optimum transmit weight vector and receive weight vector for communication between the first and second communication devices so that there is effectively joint or composite beamforming between the communication devices.

Abstract: An implantable stent (10) which is installed as a support sleeve in the region of an vasoconstriction expandable especially by means of a balloon catheter (2), is continuously broken along the one long side. On both sides of the break (4), recesses, eyelets or punchings (6) are provided on which at least one removable holding element engages in order to keep the break (4) closed at first. After removing the holding element by withdrawing or gradual dissolution of its material, the break (4) can be exposed so that the previously selected stent (1) can be subsequently expanded again while enlarging the break (4) in order, for example to take the growth of a patient into consideration.
Abstract: A subscriber unit which prevents the transmission of data between communicating nodes until the data communication rate required by the communicating nodes has been established selectively suppresses the confirmation tone that a receiving node sends to an originating node. The transmission of voice, facsimile or modem data is prevented until the communication path has been established at the desired communication rate. This permits the subscriber unit to reliably transport encoded data at a plurality of data rates without precise synchronization.

Abstract: A broadband telephony network changes a number of users in a multiuser call. The network initially has active users. Each initial active user has a one-way connection as an origin and a one-way connection as a destination. In response to a change in the number of users, for each active user maintaining an active status, the destination of one of the connections where that active user is the origin is changed while that active user remains as that connection's origin.
Abstract: A time division duplex communication system using code division multiple access transmits a plurality of data signals over a shared spectrum in a time slot. A combined signal is received over the shared spectrum in the time slot. The plurality of data signals are grouped into a plurality of groups. The combined signal is matched filtered based on in part symbol responses associated with the data signals of one of the groups. Data from each data signal in the one group is jointly detected. An interference signal is constructed based on in part the one group detected data. The constructed interference signal is subtracted from the combined signal. Data from the other groups is detected by processing the subtracted signal.

Abstract: A dispenser for a bottle that is adapted to contain a consumable beverage. The dispenser includes a dispenser body defining a chamber therein. The chamber is adapted to hold a flavoring component. The dispenser body has a first dispenser end, suitable for drinking therefrom, and has a second dispenser end, adapted to be positioned within the bottle when the dispenser is engaged with the bottle. The plunger is slidably disposed at least partially within the dispenser body for movement from a first plunger position to a second plunger position, in which the plunger penetrates a portion of the dispenser body to create a passageway. When the plunger is in the second plunger position and a cap is in a first cap position, the plunger end cooperates with the cap to seal the cap opening.
Abstract: The sliding window approach to pipeline maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoder architecture is modified to decrease processing time. Once the forward metrics have been calculated for the first sliding window of the decoder, the reverse metrics for each window are calculated while the forward metrics for the next window are calculated. As each new forward metric is calculated and stored into memory, the forward metric from the previous window is read from memory for use with reverse metric being calculated in calculating extrinsic value. Each forward metric for use in calculating an extrinsic value is read from memory on the same clock edge that the new forward metric is written to the same memory location. Although this architecture was developed for a turbo decoder, all convolution codes can use the MAP algorithm of the present invention.

Abstract: A user equipment transmits a data packet using a selected signature in a time slot of a radio frame within a superframe of a random access channel. The superframe being time divided into radio frames. A base station identifies the selected signature, transmission time slot and transmission radio frame of the data packet. The base station determines an uplink scrambling code for the user equipment based on in part the identified signature, transmission time slot and transmission radio frame. The base station selectively transmits an acknowledgment message based on in part an availability of the determined uplink scrambling code. The user equipment receives the acknowledgment message and transmits a subsequent data packet using the determined uplink scrambling code.
Abstract: A method and wireless communication system for requesting and obtaining transmit power control (TPC) information. The system includes at least one access point (AP) and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). When the AP decides to adapt the transmit power level of the WTRU, the AP transmits a TPC request frame to the WTRU. In response to receiving the TPC request frame, the WTRU performs one or more physical measurements and sends a TPC report frame back to the AP.

Abstract: Tunable upconversion mixers that have a controllable passband response and provide substantial image rejection, making costly post-mixing filtering at least optional, if not unnecessary for many applications. A single mixer is able to support several frequency bands (and/or be accurately tuned within one frequency band) by means of varying the capacitance in a tunable load circuit for the mixer circuit. The tunable mixer comprises a mixer circuit having inputs for receiving a signal to be upconverted and an oscillator signal to be mixed with the signal to be upconverted. The mixer generates a mixer output signal at a desired sideband frequency and an image signal at an image frequency.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for data processing particularly useful in combining convolutions of the spreading code, scrambling code and channel response in order to construct a system transmission coefficient matrix, while maintaining the same circuit size and execution time relative to performing each convolution separately. One register for processing real channel response values and a second register for processing imaginary channel response values, are used for moving channel responses through the convolution. In place of multipliers, an optimized minimum number of adders connected in a pyramid configuration are used to perform the necessary multiplication of the codes, for simplicity of construction. By including the channel code transformation from binary representation to complex representation as part of the overall method, unnecessary adders are eliminated from the apparatus.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for estimating a signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) of baseband signals which are received and processed by a data demodulator to provide demodulated signals to a SIR estimator. The SIR estimator receives the demodulated symbols from the data demodulator and estimates the average signal power of the demodulated symbols as a function of a median based average power value md and a mean based average power value me of the demodulated symbols for each quadrant of a quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) constellation. The function is used to determine a minimum value m between md and me. The SIR estimator estimates the average effective interference power of the demodulated symbols and calculates the SIR by dividing the estimated average signal power of the demodulated symbols by the estimated average effective interference power of the demodulated symbols. The SIR estimator reduces bias effects on SIR estimation.
