Abstract: A lubricant and surface conditioner for formed metal surfaces, particularly aluminum and tin beverage containers, reduces the coefficient of static friction of said metal surfaces and enables drying said metal surfaces at a lower temperature. The conditioner includes a water-soluble organic material selected from amine oxides and quaternary ammonium salts, fluozirconate, fluohafnate, or fluotitanate ion, and preferably also phosphate and nitrate ions. Good resistance to damaging the friction reducing effect by overheating and to staining of the domes of treated containers during pasteurization can be achieved.

Abstract: Ammonium fatty acid hydroxyalkanesulfonates are made by a process in which (a) ammonium hydroxyalkanesulfonate corresponding to general formula (I):HO--(C.sub.n H.sub.2n)--SO.sub.3 NH.sub.4 (I)wherein n=2 to 4, is subjected to the esterification reaction with a fatty acid corresponding to the formula (II)R--COOH (II)wherein RCO is an aliphatic, linear or branched acyl radical containing 6 to 18 carbon atoms, in the presence of an esterification catalyst, characterized in that (a) before the esterification reaction, the starting compounds corresponding to formulae (I) and (II) are dried at a temperature of 120.degree. C. to 160.degree. C. and under a pressure of 100 to 700 mbar; (b) the esterification reaction is carried out at a temperature above 160.degree. C. to 195.degree. C. and under a pressure of 250 mbar to atmospheric pressure; (c) water of solution and water of reaction formed are directly removed from the reaction mixture; (d) the catalyst is neutralized with a base on completion of the reaction.

Abstract: An apparatus for preparing a stock wash liquor includes a stock liquor container with a stock liquor container comprising a tub-shaped bottom section and a top section which is hermetically mounted on the bottom section and is fitted with an integral suction fan designed to generate an underpressure or partial vacuum in the bottom section. A suction line leads out of the container and into a container of powder. The aim of the invention is to further develop a device of this kind so that stock liquor can be prepared from cleaning agent powder taken directly from its container without producing any dust, and the stock liquor thus prepared stored for feeding to industrial washing or cleaning machines. This is achieved by locating a secondary suction line end inside the stock liquor container at a point which is remote from the point of entry of a primary suction line into the bottom section.
Abstract: The recovery of nickel from aqueous ammoniacal solutions containing nickel values by extraction of the nickel values therefrom with an organic solution containing an oxime extractant and an equilibrium modifier followed by stripping of the nickel values from the organic solution by a concentrated aqueous ammoniacal solution from which the nickel can then be recovered. The use of the equilibrium modifier and the concentrated ammonia stripping solution provides advantages in that (1) there is an increase in the nickel transfer of the reagent, (2) the strip solution can be built to a higher nickel concentration giving a lower volume nickel containing solution for further processing and (3) a lesser number of stripping stages are required.
Abstract: A mutant fungal strain, namely G. candidum NRRL Y-552, mutant known as Henkel 9-2-3-9 (ATCC 74170) produces a lipase called "UNLipase" providing a selectivity of 25:1 for oleic acid over palmitic acid by the assay procedure employed. UNLipase has a temperature range of operation of between 0 and 40 degrees Celsius (and no activity over 55 degrees Celsius). The optimum pH ranges are between 7.5 and 8.5. Magnesium cations increase activity, whereas calcium cations are inhibitory. The molecular weight of the protein appears to be 65 kDa by size exclusion chromatography. UNLipase shows a high degree of selectivity for hydrolysis, esterification and transesterification.

Abstract: The invention is a process and an apparatus for removing metal contamination from soil. In the method, the soil is treated to produce soil with a small particle size. The particulate soil is then separated into a coarse fraction and a fine fraction. The coarse fraction and the fine fraction are contacted with a leach solution in separate contacting zones to remove the metal contamination from the soil, the metal is removed from the leach solution and the leach solution recycled to the leaching zones.
