Abstract: A process for preparing glycosides from a source of saccharide moiety and an alcohol in the presence of a hydrophobic acid catalyst is provided. An example of such a catalyst is dinonylnaphthalenemonosulfonic acid. The use of such catalysts provides a number of process advantages, which includes the reduced production of polar by-products. Preferred glycosides produced by the process are higher alkyl glycosides useful as surfactants.

Abstract: The direct hydrothermal production of high purity sodium silicate solutions having a high SiO.sub.2 : Na.sub.2 O molar ratio by reaction of a silicon dioxide source with aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions, or with aqueous sodium silicate solutions having a lower SiO.sub.2 : Na.sub.2 O molar ratio, is made possible by using a silicon dioxide source that contains a sufficient fraction of cristobalite phase, or by conditioning other crystalline forms of silicon dioxide by heating at or above 1100.degree. C., but below the melting point of silica, before the hydrothermal treatment. Preferably the sodium hydroxide solution has a concentration range of 10 to 50% by weight, and the reaction is carried out in a closed pressure reactor at temperatures of 150.degree. to 300.degree. C. and under saturated steam pressures corresponding to those temperatures.

Abstract: Glycoside products are successfully prepared directly from aqueous saccharide solutions or syrups, and with acceptably low levels of undesired homopolymerized saccharide by-products, by dissolving same in the desired alcohol reactant or in an alcohol reactant plus glycoside product mixture and contacting the resulting homogeneous aqueous saccharide solution and alcohol-containing reaction medium with an acid catalyst in a fashion such that no separate or distinct, substantially alcohol reactant-free aqueous saccharide solution-containing phase is permitted to come into contact with said acid catalyst material under conditions conductive to homopolymerization of said saccharide reactant.

Abstract: A multicomponent product container includes two separate component compartments covered by a common pouring cap, individual pouring openings for the first and second components contained in the compartments, respectively, offset from one another relative to the longitudinal axis of the container and opening in the plane of an outer surface provided in said cap. The pouring openings are each juxtaposed in the pouring direction necessary to dispense the first and second components, by an individual pouring edge, which both rises beyond the outer surface of the cap, and projects beyond the associated pouring opening in the lateral or peripheral direction. Each pouring edge is shaped for providing in the tilted position of the container necessary for pouring via gravity said first and second components from said pouring openings, a sink formed in the region of the associated pouring opening.
