Abstract: Removal of wet overspray from lacquer or similar water insoluble coatings by predominantly aqueous cleaning liquids is improved by including in the cleaning liquids as a coagulation agent a salt of a copolymer of ethylene and acrylic acid that contains 8 to 25% by weight of acrylic acid units and 92 to 75% by weight of ethylene units in its acid form. The cleaning liquid may be conveniently made by diluting an aqueous concentrate containing 2 to 25% by weight of the copolymer salt. Including cyanamide derivatives such as calcium cyanamide in the cleaning liquid further improves its coagulating effectiveness.
Abstract: Heavily soiled fabrics are pretreated before the actual washing process by applying a paste containing a mixture of a nonionic surfactant, at least one nitrogen containing compound selected from certain quaternary ammonium compounds, fatty amine ethoxylates and substituted aminocarboxylic acids, and also an antigel agent and a viscosity regulator to the fabrics and subsequently washing the fabrics in a wash liquor. In one preferred embodiment of the process, a distributing aid trimmed in particular with bristles is used to apply the paste.

Abstract: Unpurified 2-bromo-2-nitro-1,3-propanediol is used as the starting material for a process for the preparation of 5-bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane from 2-nitro-1,3-propanediol without the use of an organic solvent on an industrial scale. This is carried out in such a way that in a first stage a mixture of bromine and aqueous hydrogen bromide solution is cooled and an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or an alkaline-earth metal salt of 2-nitro-1,3-propanediol is added at such a rate that, with cooling, the maximum reaction temperature does not exceed 30.degree. C., and then in a second reaction stage paraformaldehyde and sulfuric acid are added, left to react above room temperature, and the organic phase separated.

C. and under a pressure not greater than ambient. Preferably, there is continuous removal of water formed during the reaction, and the reaction mixture is present as free flowing particles throughout the reaction.
Abstract: A conversion coating, predominantly consisting of tin phosphate, can be deposited on steel or tin plated steel surfaces by contact with a solution containing phosphate ions, tin ions, an oxidizing agent such as chlorate, and a chelating agent for the tin ions, the latter to prevent the rapid loss of tin from the solution that otherwise would occur. A coating that confers excellent resistance to corrosion in hot water is formed on drawn and ironed thinly tin plated cans.

Abstract: Polythiols prepared by the reaction of hydrogen sulfide or organic dithiols with polyglycidyl substituted amines have been found to be outstanding curing agents for epoxy resins. Epoxy resins cured with these polythiols are characterized by not only improved gel times, but also improved cure rates, better heat resistance and greater resistance to absorption of water.A useful polythiol is the reaction product of N,N,N',N'-tetraglycidyl-m-xylylenediamine with hydrogen sulfide.

Abstract: A device for dispensing a striped mixture of two components of a paste-like flowable substance includes a lower container in which one of the components is retained. A dosing unit mounted on the container, includes a pushbutton which is depressed for forcing the first component from the container through a set of valves into a compartment of the dosing unit, through a centrally located tubular element within the compartment, and out of an upper outlet for dispensement from the device. The interior of the compartment between the tubular element is filled with a second component, which is forced upward by the first component entering the compartment, and into the tubular element via openings therethrough, for mixing with the first component as it moves through the tubular element and out of the outlet, for dispensing a striped mixture of the first and second components.

Abstract: Quaternary ammonium compounds containing one or two long-chain ester or amide radicals of etherified hydroxycarboxylic acids and, for the remainder, short-chain radicals, which are liquid to pasty substances that may readily be dissolved or dispersed in water or alcohol/water mixtures. They may be used in dilute or concentrated, storable form for softening fabrics without the absorbency of the treated fabrics being adversely affected. The quaternary ammonium compounds are obtained by reaction of epoxyfatty acid esters with amines and subsequent quaternization.
Abstract: Aqueous homogeneous preparations containing 0.0025 to 0.1% by weight antimicrobial biguanide compounds, 0.005 to 0.2% by weight of an alkyl glycoside, 0.01 to 0.3% by weight of a water-insoluble aromatic oil, 0.01 to 0.3% by weight of a solubilizer from the group consisting of ethoxylated fatty acid glycerides, ethoxylated fatty acid sorbitan partial esters or fatty acid partial esters of glycerol or sorbitan ethoxylates show high activity despite the low concentration of antimicrobial biguanide compounds.
