Patent number: 7482881Abstract: A phase locked loop (PLL) includes a detector, a charge pump, a loop filter, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), a divider, and a frequency change module. The detector provides a phase difference based on a reference signal and a feedback signal. The charge pump provides a charge based on the phase difference. The loop filter provides a voltage based on the charge. The VCO provides an output signal based on the voltage received from the loop filter. The divider divides a frequency of the output signal by a value to provide the feedback signal. The frequency change module processes an input signal having a first frequency to provide a processed signal having a second frequency that is different from the first frequency. The frequency change module selects the input signal or the processed signal to provide as the reference signal to the detector. Changing the frequency of the reference signal can change a frequency of a spur.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2005Date of Patent: January 27, 2009Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Hung-Ming Chien

Patent number: 7483718Abstract: Systems and methods that provide antenna selection in multi-antenna-element communication systems are provided. In one embodiment, a system that selects N antenna elements in an M-antenna-element transmitter or an M-antenna-element receiver, in which N is less than M, may include, for example, M antenna elements in the M-antenna-element transmitter or the M-antenna-element receiver; N RF chains; and a switch coupled to the N RF chains. The M-antenna-element receiver may determine a bit error rate for each possible N antenna element subset of the M antenna elements. The M-antenna-element receiver may determine the particular N antenna element subset with a lowest bit error rate. In response to the determination of the particular N antenna element subset with the lowest bit error rate, the switch may couple the N RF chains to the particular N antenna element subset with the lowest bit error rate.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2004Date of Patent: January 27, 2009Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Severine Catreux-Erceg, Vinko Erceg, Pieter Roux, Pieter Van Rooyen, Jack Winters

Patent number: 7483077Abstract: In a video system, a method and system for control of a multi-field deinterlacer including visually pleasing start-up and shut-down are provided. During a hard start, a deinterlacer may deinterlace a first received field and provide the resulting frame for display until sufficient fields are received to generate a pixel constellation for deinterlacing subsequent received fields. The deinterlacer may also provide a constant frame for display until sufficient fields are received to generate the pixel constellation. During normal operation, the deinterlacer may mitigate the effects of a discrepancy as to the received field type. When a video source is jittery or there is uncertainty as to the field type, deinterlacing may be forced to be based on spatial information. When a video source is shut off, a portion of the remaining stored fields may be flushed. At least one of the flushed fields may be deinterlaced and displayed.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 2004Date of Patent: January 27, 2009Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Richard H. Publication number: 20090022068Abstract: A method and system for advanced media access control delegated from a host device, such as a WiFi device, to a smart wireless communications module. In an embodiment, the host signals to the wireless module a list of one or more preferred networks. The wireless module offloads from the host the processing required to scan for the preferred network(s), as well as possibly other management tasks. The wireless communications module may automatically reassign the network connection from an existing network to a preferred network, or may report to the host when a preferred network is discovered. In either case, the wireless communications module may monitor the wireless environment, and scan for preferred networks, in parallel with maintaining an existing connection. The method and system allows rapid adaptation to a changing network environment, and enables lower system power consumption by distributing management functions between the host and the lower-powered wireless communications module.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 11, 2008Publication date: January 22, 2009Applicant: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Mahesh D. Patent number: 7480514Abstract: A wireless terminal displays its location and a map segment on a display of the wireless terminal. Operation commences with the wireless terminal accessing its GPS receiver to determine its location coordinates. Based upon its location coordinates, the wireless terminal accesses a map segment. The wireless terminal determines its orientation with respect to a reference direction. The wireless terminal displays the map segment on its display such that the map segment is displayed in a correct orientation with respect to mapped physical features. The wireless terminal displays an icon on its display that represents the wireless terminal. The icon is displayed on the map segment at a location corresponding to the location coordinates of the wireless terminal. The display of the wireless terminal orients the mapped physical features on the display so that they are oriented correctly with respect to the actual physical features.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2005Date of Patent: January 20, 2009Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Jeyhan Karaoguz, James D. Patent number: 7480344Abstract: In an envelope comparison embodiment, a delay calibrator produces a delay signal based on a comparison of a feedback signal and an envelope component of the transmitted signal. A down-converter produces the feedback signal from an outgoing modulated RF signal based on at least one local oscillation. Envelope detectors in the delay calibrator and the envelope signal path are operably coupled to a summing node that produces a delay error signal based on a temporal difference between the two envelopes. One embodiment includes phase detectors to detect and adjust the zero crossings of the feedback signal and the envelope signal path. As the delay mismatch between the envelope signal path and the phase signal path increases, the power spectrum increases in adjacent communication channels. A mask margin measurement technique measures the power level in an adjacent channel and adjusts the envelope path delay accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2004Date of Patent: January 20, 2009Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Alireza Zolfaghari, Henrik T. Patent number: 7480751Abstract: A system and method performs speed and connection handshaking between Beta signal ports and/or a Bilingual ports in a serial data interface system. A tone pattern generator (e.g., a flip-flop) can be used to generate a tone pattern signal representing approximately 49 MHz to approximately 62 MHz. A selecting system (e.g., a multiplexer, a digital multiplexer, or the like) selectively transmits either the tone pattern signal or a data input signal. These signals include a driver control signal. A serializer serializes either the tone pattern signal or the data input signal. A clock device (e.g., a clock divider) drives the tone pattern generator and the serializer. A driver receives and differentially transmits, along a twister-wire pair, either the serialized tone pattern signal or the serialized data input signal.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 2003Date of Patent: January 20, 2009Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Josephus A.
