Abstract: In RF transceivers, a method and system for a second order input intercept point (IIP2) correction are provided. A DC offset sensor may detect DC offset voltages produced by blocker signals in āIā and āQā signal component paths in an RF receiver. The DC offset sensor may generate control signals which may be utilized by a first and second injection circuits to generate DC offset currents that compensate for the DC offset voltages in the signal component paths. An injection circuit may utilize current drivers to generate binary weighted currents which may be added together to produce a DC offset current. The polarity of the DC offset current and the selection of which current drivers to use may be determined by the control signals. A calibration voltage may also be utilized to correct or adjust the gain in the injection circuit.

Abstract: Physical layer (PHY) sub-channel processing. A soft symbol decision stream is arranged into a number of sub-channels to reduce substantially the processing performed within a communication receiver on data that is not intended for that communication receiver. In other embodiments, a predetermined approach is employed to arrange the soft symbol decision stream into one or more frames; each frame may have one or more soft symbol blocks; and each soft symbol block may have one or more symbols. Each of the soft symbol blocks, within a frame, may be assigned to a sub-channel. Only the soft symbol blocks that contain information destined for the communication receiver need be decoded. Only the sub-channel that includes these soft symbol blocks, destined for this communication receiver, need be decoded. The soft symbol blocks not within the sub-channel may be discarded thereby recovering some of the processing capabilities of the communication receiver.

Abstract: Magnetic reference patterns may be generated on a disk or other magnetic media without the need for seed wedges. This involves writing a first magnetic reference pattern to the disk with a servo writer. The disk may then be transferred to a hard disk drive. Control circuitry within the hard disk drive may recognize the first magnetic reference pattern and then position a RW head within the hard disk drive based on the first magnetic reference pattern. As the RW drive is accurately positioned based on the first magnetic reference pattern a second magnetic reference pattern may be written to the disk using the RW head. The RW head location is determined based on the velocity and phase between the read-write head and spiral sync marks contained within the first magnetic reference pattern.

Abstract: Various embodiments are disclosed relating filter calibration with cell re-use. According to an example embodiment, an apparatus includes a first circuit, including a variable circuit element. The first circuit is adapted to output an output frequency signal during a calibration mode and to operate as a filter during a filter mode. A control circuit is coupled to the first circuit and is adapted to receive a reference frequency signal and to calibrate the first circuit by adjusting the variable circuit element based on the reference frequency signal and the output frequency signal during the calibration mode. The calibrated first circuit is configured to then operate as a filter during the filter mode.
Abstract: A switch, switched architecture and process for transferring data through an FCAL switch is disclosed. The switch uses multiple switch control circuits each coupled to one FCAL network and all connected to a crossbar switch. The switch control circuits are coupled together by a protocol bus for coordination purposes. Local conversations can occur on each FCAL loop and crossing conversations through the switch can occur concurrently. The OPN primitive is used to establish the connection before any data is transferred thereby eliminating the need for buffer memory in the switch control circuits. The destination address of each OPN is used to address a lookup table in each switch control circuit to determine if the destination node is local. If not, the destination is looked up and a connection request made on the protocol bus. If the remote port is not busy, it sends a reply which causes both ports to establish a data path through the backplane crossbar switch.

Abstract: Multi-carrier modulation fiber optic systems constructed using a series of electrical carriers, modulating the data on the electrical carriers and combining the carriers to form a wideband signal. The wideband signal can then be intensity modulated on a laser and coupled to a fiber optic channel. A receiver may then receive the laser signal from the fiber optic channel and convert it into an electrical signal. Multi-carrier modulation may be applied to existing fiber channels, which may be of lower quality. Existing fiber channels may have characteristics which prevent or restrict the transmission of data using intensity modulation at certain frequencies. An adaptive multi-carrier modulation transmitter may characterize an existing fiber optic channel and ascertain the overall characteristics of the channel. The transmitter and receiver can then be configured to use various bandwidths and various modulations in order to match the transfer characteristic of the fiber channel.
Abstract: In a wireless system, a method and system for channel estimation in a single channel MIMO system comprising two-transmit and multiple-receive antennas for WCDMA/HSDPA are provided. A first receive antenna and at least one additional receive antenna may receive a plurality of SC communication signals transmitted from a first and an additional transmit antennas. Estimates of the propagation channels between transmit and receive antennas may be performed concurrently and may be determined from a baseband combined channel estimate. The integration time may be based on channel estimation accuracy and wireless modem performance. The signals received in the additional receive antennas may be multiplied by a rotation waveform to achieve channel orthogonality. The rotation waveform's amplitude and phase components may be modified based on the channel estimates. Rotation of the received signals in the additional receive antennas may be continuous or periodic.

Abstract: A translational-loop transmitter includes a local oscillator (LO) generator for generating first and second LO signals, a modulator for generating a modulated reference signal using the second LO signal, and an offset phase-locked-loop (PLL) for phase-locking an output signal to the reference signal, and for tuning the output signal in accordance with the first LO signal. The PLL includes an offset mixer in a feedback path of the PLL, and operates in accordance with a frequency plan that minimizes the effects of on- and off-channel spurs at the output of the offset mixer.
Abstract: A radio frequency (RF) transmitter includes a digital radio processor and a baseband processor. A complex analog-to-digital converter (ADC) within the radio processor provides an analog interface to the baseband processor to receive an analog complex modulated baseband signal and convert the analog complex modulated baseband signal to a digital complex modulated baseband signal. A demodulator within the radio processor demodulates the digital complex modulated baseband signal to recreate the original transmit digital data as a demodulated digital signal. The demodulated digital signal is processed by a digital processor in the radio processor to mitigate the effects of various imperfections in the radio processor circuitry.

Abstract: Symbol by symbol variable code rate capable communication device. A communication device is operable to perform processing of a variable code rate signal whose code rate varies on a symbol by symbol basis. This may involve performing encoding of input to generate the variable code rate signal; alternatively, this may involve performing decoding of a variable code rate signal. In doing so, this approach may involve using a single encoder and/or decoder (depending on the application). In some instances, a single device is operable to encode a first variable code rate signal (for transmission to another device) and to decode a second variable code rate signal (that has been received from another device). In addition, a method of coding (including one or both of encoding and decoding) may also operate of a variable code rate signal whose code rate varies on a symbol by symbol basis.
