Publication number: 20110258518Abstract: Variable modulation within combined LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) coding and modulation coding systems. A novel approach is presented for variable modulation encoding of LDPC coded symbols. In addition, LDPC encoding, that generates an LDPC variable code rate signal, may also be performed as well. The encoding can generate an LDPC variable code rate and/or modulation signal whose code rate and/or modulation may vary as frequently as on a symbol by symbol basis. Some embodiments employ a common constellation shape for all of the symbols of the signal sequence, yet individual symbols may be mapped according different mappings of the commonly shaped constellation; such an embodiment may be viewed as generating a LDPC variable mapped signal. In general, any one or more of the code rate, constellation shape, or mapping of the individual symbols of a signal sequence may vary as frequently as on a symbol by symbol basis.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 26, 2011Publication date: October 20, 2011Applicant: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventors: Ba-Zhong Shen, Hau Thien Tran, Kelly Brian Cameron

Patent number: 8040437Abstract: A method and system for analog video noise detection are provided. A motion metric (MM) value may be determined for pixels in a video image. The MM values may be collected and accumulated for a number of noise level intervals to determine average noise levels for each interval. An early-exit algorithm (EEA) or an interpolation estimate algorithm (IEA) may be utilized to determine the noise level. The EEA may select the noise level based on a first noise level interval with a number of collected samples larger than a threshold. The IEA may determine the noise level based on an average of a plurality of noise levels associated with consecutive noise level intervals with collected samples that are larger than the threshold. A noise level indicator (NLI) may be the noise level of the current image or an average based on noise levels from the current and previous images.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2005Date of Patent: October 18, 2011Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Sheng Zhong

Patent number: 8040864Abstract: Providing Quality of Service (QoS) information regarding video content delivery to a requesting wireless device. QoS/position information is first collected by, for each wireless device of a plurality of serviced wireless devices operating within a service area, receiving position information regarding a wireless device during delivery of video content and determining QoS provided during delivery of the video content, the QoS provided during delivery of the video content delivery varying over time and respective to the position information. The collected QoS/position information is then consolidated and a QoS map for the service area is produced based upon the consolidated collected QoS/position information. Finally, the QoS map for the service area is downloaded to the requesting wireless device. The QoS map may be tailored for the requesting wireless device based upon a current position/mobility of the requesting wireless device.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 2008Date of Patent: October 18, 2011Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Jeyhan Karaoguz, Sherman Xuemin Chen, Michael Dove, Thomas J. Patent number: 8040941Abstract: A device of dynamic communication of information allows, on the average, non-integer bits per symbol transmission, using a compact code set or a partial response decoding receiver. A stream of selectable predetermined integer bits, e.g., k or k+1 data bits, is grouped into a selectable integer number of bit vectors which then are mapped onto corresponding signal constellations forming transmission symbols. Two or more symbols can be grouped and further encoded, so that a symbol is spread across the two or more symbols being communicated. Sequence estimation using, for example, maximum likelihood techniques, as informed by noise estimates relative to the received signal. Each branch metric in computing the path metric of a considered sequence at the receiver is weighted by the inverse of the noise power. It is desirable that the constellation selection, sequence estimation and noise estimation be performed continuously and dynamically.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 2007Date of Patent: October 18, 2011Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Thuji Simon Lin, Steven Jaffe, Robindra Joshi

Patent number: 8041562Abstract: A technique is described herein for reducing audible artifacts in an audio output signal generated by decoding a received frame in a series of frames representing an encoded audio signal in a predictive coding system. In accordance with the technique, it is determined if the received frame is one of a predefined number of received frames that follow a lost frame in the series of the frames. Responsive to determining that the received frame is one of the predefined number of received frames, at least one parameter or signal associated with the decoding of the received frame is altered from a state associated with normal decoding. The received frame is then decoded in accordance with the at least one parameter or signal to generate a decoded audio signal. The audio output signal is then generated based on the decoded audio signal.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2009Date of Patent: October 18, 2011Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Jes Thyssen

Patent number: 8040809Abstract: Aspects of a method and system for a client QoS based connection session jogging are provided. While receiving a service over a particular delivery route, a user of a user device is provided with the capability to request an alternate route to continue to deliver the service via a user interface operation. The user device generates a connection handover (HO) request and transmits the request to a network management (NM) server. The NM server determines the alternate route and continues the service over the determined alternate route. The NM server supports both unsolicited and solicited connection HO request. A connection session profile associated with the particular delivery route is updated based on the determined alternate route information. The service is continued over the alternate route with the updated connection session profile. A connection HO request indicates a desired QoS from the user of the user device for the received service.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 2008Date of Patent: October 18, 2011Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: James Bennett, Jeyhan Karaoguz
