Patent number: 7741670Abstract: A semiconductor capacitor that includes a plurality of overlapping conductive layers and a field-effect transistor. The plurality of conductive layers include a first and second conductive layers that are spaced apart to creating a capacitance between the plurality of layers. In the semiconductor capacitor, the FET has a source, a drain and a gate. When the FET is in conduction mode, a capacitance is created between the gate and the conductive path in the semiconductor substrate between the source and the drain. The semiconductor capacitor's total capacitance is increased by coupling the drain and the source to the first conductive layer and coupling the gate to the second conductive layer.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2005Date of Patent: June 22, 2010Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Meng-An Pan

Publication number: 20100149006Abstract: Four (4) unshielded twisted pairs of wires connect a hub and a computer in an Ethernet system: one (1) pair for transmission only, another for reception only and the other two (2) for transmission and reception. The signals in the wires are in packets each having timing signals defining a preamble and thereafter having digital signals representing information as by individual ones of three (3) amplitude levels. The signals received at the computer are provided with an automatic gain control (AGC) and then with digital conversions at a particular rate. A control loop operative upon the digital conversions regulates the AGC gain at a particular value. An equalizer operative only during the occurrence of the digital signals in each packet selects an individual one of the three (3) amplitude levels closest to the amplitude of each digital conversion at the time assumed to constitute the conversion peak.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2009Publication date: June 17, 2010Applicant: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Henry Samueli, Mark Berman, Fang Lu

Publication number: 20100148929Abstract: A transceiver for a RFID reader and a transceiver for a RFID transponder (tag) allow communication between the two devices. The RFID reader utilizes an analog front end and a digital backend. In the receiver portion of the transceiver, the front end of the RFID reader uses a pair of down-conversion mixers to demodulate a received signal into in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components and analog-to-digital converters (ADC) digitize the signal. A digital signal processor (DSP) in the back end processes the digital signal and uses a matched filter for data detection. The RFID tag receives an inductively coupled signal from the reader and the receiver portion of the tag uses a pulse/level detector that employs an analog comparator and a sample and hold circuit to detect the received signal. A digital decoder/controller is used to decode the incoming data and to establish a sampling clock for the pulse/level detector.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 24, 2010Publication date: June 17, 2010Applicant: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventors: Jiangfeng Wu, Donald Edward Major

Publication number: 20100150360Abstract: Systems and methods are described that perform audio source localization in a manner that provides increased robustness and responsiveness in the presence of acoustic echo. The systems and methods calculate a difference between a signal level associated with one or more of the audio signals generated by a microphone array and an estimated level of acoustic echo associated with one or more of the audio signals. This information is then used to determine whether and/or how to perform audio source localization. For example, a controller may use the difference to determine whether or not to freeze an audio source localization module that operates on the audio signals. As another example, the audio source localization module may incorporate the difference (or the estimated level of acoustic echo used to calculate the difference) into the logic that is used to determine the location of a desired audio source.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 30, 2009Publication date: June 17, 2010Applicant: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventor: Franck Beaucoup

Patent number: 7738482Abstract: The present invention describes a communications system having a first link partner and a second link partner that are connected by a communications link having at least four pairs of conductors. According to IEEE Standard 802.3 (e.g. Ethernet) for 1000Base-T, a data link is maintained (in a period absent data transmission) by sending idle signals over four pairs of conductors of the cable to maintain a logical connection. This idle signal scheme is replaced with an alternate idle signaling scheme that uses only two pairs of conductors to maintain a logical connection and therefore can operate with using lower power. The other two pairs of conductors of the four pairs of conductors are unused to maintain a logical connection absent data transfer, and therefore can be used to implement a Suspend Mode of operation. During Suspend Mode, the physical layer of each link partner powers down unnecessary circuitry so as to operate in a low power environment.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2004Date of Patent: June 15, 2010Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Richard G. Patent number: 7738652Abstract: A modem includes modem circuitry and modem software that is executed by a processor. When the modem circuitry detects that the modem software is nonfunctional, it enters an on-hook state to prevent blocking of a coupled telephone line. A nonfunctional state of the modem software is detected when the modem software ceases to interact with the modem circuitry in an expected manner. In a first operation, the nonfunctional state is determined when the modem software does not reset a count down timer in the modem circuitry before the count down timer reaches a termination value. In a second operation, the nonfunctional state is determined when the modem software does not access the modem circuitry before the count down timer reaches the termination value. In a third operation, the nonfunctional state is determined when the modem software ceases writing transmit data to DMA memory.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2006Date of Patent: June 15, 2010Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Mark Gonikberg
