Abstract: Methods and systems for maintaining desired circuit and/or signal characteristics, such as impedance matching characteristics and rise and fall time characteristics, over a range of PVT variations. In an embodiment, a PVT compensating circuit senses one or more circuit and/or signal characteristics at an output pad or terminal. When the one or more circuit and/or signal characteristics are affected by PVT variations in the IC and/or load, the PVT compensating circuit controls a variable output drive to maintain the one or more circuit and/or signal characteristics within a desired or predetermined range. The PVT compensating circuit is designed to compensate over a range of PVT variations. In an embodiment, the PVT compensating circuit senses a rate of voltage change over time (i.e., dV/dt), of an output signal at the output terminal. During state transitions of the output signal, the output signal is adjusted as needed to maintain a desired, or predetermined, rate of voltage change.

Abstract: Various circuit techniques for implementing ultra high speed circuits use current-controlled CMOS (C3MOS) logic with inductive broadbanding fabricated in conventional CMOS process technology. Optimum balance between power consumption and speed for each circuit application is achieve by combining high speed C3MOS logic with inductive broadbanding/C3MOS logic with low power conventional CMOS logic. The combined C3MOS logic with inductive broadbanding/C3MOS/CMOS logic allows greater integration of circuits such as high speed transceivers used in fiber optic communication systems.

  • Publication number: 20030122620
Abstract: An extended range variable gain amplifier is described. The variable gain capability is achieved by replacing differential pair amplifiers having an input signal with less attenuation with one having an input signal that is more attenuated. This replacement continues until only ten differential pair amplifiers are remaining. At this point, if less gain is desired, differential pair amplifiers are turned off, but are not replaced. A minimum number of amplifiers will remain on.

  • Publication number: 20030122606
Abstract: A method of preventing Hot Carrier Injection in input/output connections on low voltage integrated circuits. As integrated circuit voltages drop generally so does the external voltages that those circuits can tolerate. By placing input/output devices, in series, external voltages can be divided between the devices thereby reducing junction voltages seen by internal devices. A circuit for preventing Hot Carrier Injection in these input/output devices comprises comparing an input voltage to a reference voltage, and if conditions that would produce Hot Carrier Injection are present (e.g. when input voltage is greater than reference voltage), slowing the turn-on of one of the series connected input/output devices, thereby reducing the voltage from the drain-to-source of another series connected input/output device.

  • Patent number: 6586292
Abstract: A methodology of creating integrated circuits with improved noise isolation is presented. The circuitry of an integrated circuits is separated into noise generating circuit blocks and noise sensitive circuit blocks. N-type and P-type diffusion guard rings are placed around each of the circuit blocks. Substantially overlying the N-type and P-type diffusion guard rings are power supply meshes which are intimately in contract with the guard rings below through spaced apart vias. The power supply meshes not only supply power for the circuit blocks, but also reverse-bias the diffusion guard rings for improved noise isolation.

  • Patent number: 6587321
Abstract: The present invention relates to electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and, more particularly, to methods and systems for improving response times of ESD triggering and clamping circuitry. An ESD protection circuit protects ESD circuitry from direct current (DC) voltage stress during normal operations by reducing terminal pad voltage level. A frequency bypass circuit implemented across an ESD protection circuit essentially acts as a short circuit during ESD events and essentially acts as an open circuit during normal operations. A frequency bypass circuit implemented in conjunction with an ESD protection circuit enables ESD triggering and clamping circuitry to react to ESD events without undue delay. Unlike an ESD protection circuit, a frequency bypass circuit does not result in substantial voltage reduction across its terminals. In an embodiment, the frequency bypass circuit includes one or more capacitors.

  • Publication number: 20030118016
Abstract: A method of forwarding data in a network switch fabric is disclosed. An incoming data packet is received at a first port of the fabric and a first packet portion, less than a full packet length, is read to determine particular packet information, the particular packet information including a source address and a destination address. An egress port bitmap is determined based on a lookup in a forwarding table and it is determined if the destination address belongs to a trunk group of trunked ports. The incoming data packet is forwarded based on the egress port bitmap, when the destination address does not belong to the trunk group. When the destination address does belong to the trunk group, a particular trunked port of the trunk group is determined and the incoming data packet is forwarded thereto.

  • Publication number: 20030117998
Abstract: An optical line terminal (OLT) monitors and controls communications with a plurality of optical nodes (ONs), such as optical network units (ONUs) and/or optical network terminators (ONTs), within a passive optical network (PON), such as, but not exclusively, an Ethernet-based passive optical node (EPON). A tagging mechanism is implemented to identify an origin ON that introduces a frame into the PON segment linking the origin ON with the OLT. The origin ON produces a PON tag to associate its identifier (ON_ID) to the frame. The PON tag facilitates filtering and forwarding operations, and enables the physical layer interface (PHY) to the PON segment to emulate a point-to-point and/or shared communications link. The PON tag allows a MAC control layer to create virtual ports to traffic incoming and outgoing optical signals, and supply the virtual ports to a forwarding entity for frame filtering and forwarding.

  • Patent number: 6583675
Abstract: A gain compensator compensates for the gain variation of a varactor-tuned voltage tuned oscillator (VCO) in a phase lock loop (PLL). The VCO includes a parallel LC circuit having multiple fixed capacitors that can be switched-in or switched-out of the LC circuit according to a capacitor control signal to perform band-select tuning of the VCO. The gain compensator compensates for the variable VCO gain by generating a charge pump reference current that is based on the same capacitor control signal that controls the fixed capacitors in the LC circuit. The gain compensator generates the charge pump reference current by replicating a reference scale current using unit current sources. The number of times the reference scale current is replicated is based on the fixed capacitance that is switched-in to the LC circuit and therefore the frequency band of the PLL.
