Abstract: A method of manufacturing a friction band useful as either a brake band or a transmission band is provided. The band includes an arcuate metallic strip lined with a frictional strip. These strips are adhered together while in a flat, straight condition. The adhered strips are then formed into a generally arcuate shape, with the lining strip on the interior. Brackets are then provided on each free end of the metallic strip. The brackets are welded to the metallic strip. Sufficient area of the metallic strip is exposed in the area of the brackets to permit use of closely adjacent electrodes against the bracket and metallic strip.
Abstract: An emergency exit indicator that will signal the location of an emergency exit by a high intensity smoke piercing light and audible alarm, becoming activated automatically when smoke reaches a predetermined level. This indicator is particularly useful in movie theatres, night clubs and similar places where it is necessary to utilize subdued exit lights that will not be distracting. In cases of emergency involving smoke, the emergency exit indicator of this invention becomes activated automatically, thereby emitting a powerful beam of light capable of piercing through substantial distances of dense smoke. However, when the indicator is not activated it will not cause a distraction.
Abstract: An improved transfer device for transferring soft cake-shaped products, and soap cakes in particular, from one conveyor to another conveyor, which device comprises a sliding member reciprocatingly moved along a horizontal guide parallel to said one conveyor, and an oscillating arm associated to said sliding member to cause a vertical and reciprocating movement of sucker means carried by said sliding member. A locking device is provided for locking said oscillating arm in its upwardly directed position when sensing means, positioned near the drawing area of said one conveyor, detects an irregular sequence of products. An intercepting bar means, positioned at the end of said one conveyor and near said drawing area, is cyclically moved from an intercepting to a disengaging position, and viceversa, to intercept the irregularly supplied products and to hold them in the sucker means drawing area so as to be correctly sucked by said sucker means during the next machine cycle.
Abstract: A rotating machine mounted on a rotating shaft has a rotor turned by the ating shaft and a stator mounted for free rotation with respect to said shaft. The stator comprises a fly-wheel, ballasted at a point of its periphery and equipped with movable masses to compensate for imbalance in the case of accidental joining in rotation of the rotor and the stator. The disclosure shows an alternator mounted in the forward nose of an aircraft reactor, to supply power to devices located in the rotating parts.

Abstract: A lubricant for forming a ferrous metal blank into a preselected configuration by warm- or hot-forming procedures. The lubricant is an alkali-modified borate glass containing a minor mole percent of an alkali metal oxide, preferably sodium oxide. The glass is formed in situ on the surface to be lubricated by depositing on the surface a glass-forming mixture of a source of boron oxide and an alkali metal borate and then heating the mixture to form the glass.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for increasing the light produced by a laser beam on a target, consisting in reflecting this beam on a deformable mirror comprising several piezoelectric elements. The polarization voltage of each of the elements is successively increased by a predetermined DC voltage, this increase being maintained only if it corresponds to an increase in the light intensity diffused by the target. Application to the focussing of a data transmitting laser beam on an aerial.

Abstract: A bus duct system comprising straight sections of bus duct, bracing members in said bus duct to support a plurality of flat bus bars in spaced apart relationship, access opening for tap-off boxes having sliding doors to open and close said access openings. The bus duct sections include slots in the walls of the bus duct to receive projections of the bracing members to hold the bracing members in position within the bus duct. The bracing members are located adjacent the access openings to provide stability for connecting a tap-off box to the bus bars.
Abstract: An infra-red telemeter comprises a pilot oscillator 1 and a controlled oscillator 2 kept in phase with the pilot oscillator 1. The controlled oscillator 2 provides the modulation frequency for transmission, either directly for fine measurement or via a counter 11 which divides by M. for coarse measurement, while the pilot oscillator 1 provides a heterodyne frequency, either directly or after division by N in a counter 17, respectively. After the received modulation signal has been mixed with the heterodyne frequency, a phase detector 18 compares the phase of the mixed signal with the phase of a reference low frequency obtained by the frequency of oscillator 1 being divided by H in counter 17. The phase servo loop operates continuously, in the case of both fine and coarse measurement.

Abstract: A multi-pole circuit breaker includes a wide toggle shaft which spans all of the poles of the breaker and which is electrically neutral. The lower links of the toggle mechanism are made of phenolic or other insulating material which thus electrically insulates the wide toggle shaft spanning all of the poles of the breaker and makes the toggle shaft electrically neutral. A plurality of short toggle springs may therefore be connected between the wide toggle shaft and a handle arm of corresponding width. The plurality of short toggle springs provide as much tripping energy as the longer single or double toggle springs of prior art circuit breakers in which the springs are clustered together in alignment with one pole of the breaker to which they are electrically connected and whose polarity the toggle springs in such prior art breakers accordingly take.
Abstract: In order to determine the positions in space of certain points on the surface of a body, a laser beam is trained upon a selected punctiform area of that surface and two sets of reflected light rays, traveling along divergent paths, are intercepted and focused by one or two objectives upon one or two receiving surfaces to form a pair of image points thereon. The receiving surface or surfaces may be part of a television camera. The location of each image point with respect to a reference point is numerically coded for utilization in a calculator which mathematically determines the desired position.

Abstract: A magnetic information card encoding apparatus wherein the train of clock pulses used to synchronize the release of binary data from a storage register to a recorder head is generated by the motion of the card itself. Structural means forms a card receiving slot into which the card is manually inserted and removed. A rotatable carriage assembly consists of a drive shaft, photoelectric means responsive to rotation of the drive shaft for generating the clock pulse train, an idler wheel, and spring biasing means for urging the idler wheel against the drive shaft in a friction drive relationship. A second spring biasing means urges the carriage assembly to rotate such that the idler wheel frictionally engages the card so as to be driven thereby. A switch is actuated by the leading edge of the card to provide a signal defining the position of the card in the slot. The arrangement is such that the information card is erased on insertion and encoded on withdrawal.

Abstract: In the hinged-lid type cigarette packets, the upper flap protruding from the front wide side of the inner wrapper should, for convenience in the use, be folded over the upper flap protruding from the rear wide side of the same inner wrapper. In some of the conventional soft type packeting machines the folding disposition of the upper flaps is exactly opposite to the one above described, and the present invention provides for a device which allows the use, in a hinged-lid type packeting machine, of a rotating wrapping head normally used in the soft type packeting machine, since said device reverses the folding disposition of the upper flaps.
