Patent number: 4546738Abstract: A reciprocating internal combustion engine comprises an engine block, which includes cylinders, cylinder heads, pistons, connecting rods, a crankshaft and the mainshaft bearings for the crankshaft. That engine block is held in an outer pan by means of annular supporting elements, which are provided at both ends of the engine block and are coaxial to the crankshaft and insulate against a transmission of structure-borne noise. The engine block is sealed to the upper edge portion of the outer pan only by an oil seal. The outer pan consists of two parts, which are connected by screws. To prolong the service life of the annular supporting elements and to reduce the manufacturing costs, the outer pan has a parting plane which contains the axis of the crankshaft. The supporting elements are secured in the outer pan merely by being clamped between the two parts of the pan.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1984Date of Patent: October 15, 1985Assignee: Steyr-Daimler-Puch AktiengesellschaftInventor: Tomas Visek

Patent number: 4547734Abstract: An equipment for recognizing misfiring, which is particularly suitable for permanent installation in a motor vehicle. By means of high-pass filters coupled to the plug leads between the spark distributor and the spark plugs, the change to the voltage at the spark plugs associated with the initiation of the ignition spark is sensed. The high-pass filters are so arranged that they only send on a needle-shaped output pulse signal to an analysis circuit if it appears with the change in voltage associated with the spark front. The analysis circuit generates appropriate output signals with reference pulses generated in time with the ignition pulses. The high-pass filters are preferably arranged as simple RC filters whose capacities are coupled to the plug leads by means of peripheral electrodes, which at least partially surround the insulation coatings of the plug leads.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1983Date of Patent: October 15, 1985Assignee: Daimler-Benz AktiengesellschaftInventor: Heinz-Werner Spaude

Patent number: 4537349Abstract: The invention relates to a motor vehicle with an internal-combustion engine, with a heatable payload space and with a pipe flowed by air and leading into the atmosphere, which is divided into two pipe branches. A first heat exchanger flowed by the waste gases of the internal combustion engine is arranged in one of these pipe branches, while a second heat exchanger is arranged in the pipe downstream of the conjunction of the two pipe branches. The latter heat exchanger is flowed on the secondary side by a liquid serving to cool the internal-combustion engine, so that waste gas heat can be transmitted to this liquid, or cooling heat can be discharged to the exterior, as a function of heat incidence and heat demand. In certain embodiments, two heat exchangers are arranged in series in the pipe leading to the atmosphere, one operatively interposed in the engine cooling water circuit, the other operatively interposed in the engine cooling oil circuit.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1984Date of Patent: August 27, 1985Assignee: Daimler-Benz AktiengesellschaftInventor: Albert Stolz

Patent number: 4534457Abstract: In a multi-disc clutch or brake, several lamellae in the form of annular discs cannot only be fixed essentially non-rotatably, relative to a lamella carrier fixed in terms of rotation in relation to one of the two clutch or brake parts, by means of a releasable positive connection but can also each be supported radially exclusively at an individual point on the lamella carrier, each by means of its own resilient clamping means, the clamping means being retained on the lamella carrier. At least one central annular gap located, in the peripheral direction of the axis of rotation, between two engaging teeth of the positive connection and open in the two directions of the axis of rotation is limited radially in one directions by a cylindrical shell portion of a lamella and in the other direction by a cylindrical shell portion of the lamella carrier. The engagement surface of the clamping means, used for the purpose of support, is located in the annular gap and interacts with the shell portion of the lamella.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1984Date of Patent: August 13, 1985Assignee: Daimler-Benz AktiengesellschaftInventors: Georg Eltze, Klaus Luttge, Jurgen Pickard, Hans Rubmann, Helmut Sandner

Patent number: 4532894Abstract: A heating system for a dual-mode vehicle, such as a bus equipped with both electrical and internal combustion engine drive systems, is provided with an electrically powered heat exchanger and an auxiliary fuel heater serially connected in the engine cooling water flow line. The electric heat exchanger provides a non-polluting source of heat for the vehicle's interior within electrified portions of the drive route. The auxiliary heater supplies heat when the vehicle is standing (i.e., parked) with the engine shut off in non-electrified portions of the route. An electric water pump is also connected in series with the electric and fuel heaters. During periods of electric drive operation, the electric heater is activated when the engine cooling water temperature falls below a predetermined level even if no heat is required for the vehicle interior.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1984Date of Patent: August 6, 1985Assignee: Daimler-Benz AktiengesellschaftInventors: Helmut Wulf, Friedrich Baehrle

Patent number: 4533184Abstract: Wheel for motor vehicles of the type which is cast or forged in one piece and composed of a light metal alloy and possessing a rim and a wheel disc with a radial clearance between the rim and the periphery of the wheel disc. Ventilation apertures are defined by the radial clearance and radially extending connecting webs bridging same. In order to provide an outer appearance which is aesthetically pleasing and to limit soiling of the wheel by brake friction material while facilitating a strong light weight construction the ventilation apertures extend radially so they are not visible as open windows from the front, a stiffening ring at the wheel disc forms a connection base for the connecting webs, which ring is severed at spaced locations during manufacture.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1983Date of Patent: August 6, 1985Assignee: Daimler-Benz AktiengesellschaftInventors: Alf Muller, Hermann Schobbe, Bernd Loper, Hartmut Binnewies

Patent number: 4531294Abstract: Apparatus for measuring or monitoring the diameter of rod-shaped workpieces comprises two driven and interdigitating pinion rollers for rotating the workpiece about its longitudinal axis and at least one pair of mutually opposite measuring gages adapted to be urged against the workpiece and connected to an electronic evaluating device. To permit a rapid measurement of the workpieces which is independent of the attention and carefulness of an operator, the workpiece is fed via an inclined trough to the pinion rollers so that the workpiece engages an axial stop. The workpiece is then urged against the pinion rolls by a pressure-applying roller, which is radially movable into and out of engagement with the workpiece. By spring force and/or a pressure fluid the measuring gages are jointly moved into and out of engagement with the workpiece when the latter lies on the pinion rolls and is axially located by the axial stop.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1983Date of Patent: July 30, 1985Assignee: Steyr-Daimler-Puch AktiengesellschaftInventor: Wolfgang Lenz
