Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing a specified amount of heat on a test specimen, a portion of a specimen, or multiple specimens, under space-like conditions. This system includes a vacuum chamber in which one or more test specimens are placed. This chamber is evacuated to the necessary vacuum. One or more external sources of high intensity light is used for providing the necessary temperature. One or more reflectors are used for concentrating the high intensity light. A fiber optic light guide is used for receiving concentrated light from the reflector. A port in the vacuum chamber wall is used so that the second end of the light guide can extend into the chamber so that light exiting the second end impinges on a selected area of the test specimen. A positioning apparatus is used for locating the second end of the light guide within the housing adjacent to vary the test specimen area subjected to the light.

Abstract: A continuous, low shear solids dissolution system involving a water supply system (100), polymer metering system (120), mixture feed tank (152), mixture pump (154), mixture conduit (172), undissolved polymer dispersal element (188), solution sieve assembly (210), and holding tank (250). The polymer-water mixture (156) is pumped through mixture conduit (172). Undissolved particles of polymer encounter dispersal elements (188) and the particles are more uniformly dispersed. Any particles which are carried undissolved out of the mixture conduit (172) are forced through sieve (214) to further disperse the polymer in the water. The undissolved polymer is completely dissolved by low shear agitation in a holding tank (250).

Abstract: A clamshell type carton is provided with a cut along the hinge score line connecting the upper cover and lower tray portions. Either a second cut in the back panel of the carton, above or below the hinge score line cut, or a cut-out slot encompassing the hinge score line cut, is utilized to facilitate the easy opening and closing of the carton without buckling occurring in the back panel in the region of the hinge score line.
Abstract: Door operator for commercial and domestic use with swing-mounted doors are disclosed. Each operator employs a variable-speed d.c. motor as prime mover, and a vertically oriented door-driving operator output shaft journalled in a transmission having a compact transmission housing which includes shock mounts for mounting of the transmission housing and operator within structure associated with the door. The transmission provides speed reduction coupling of the motor drive shaft to the operator output shaft with substantially right-angled relationship between their axes of rotation. The transmission includes a drive gear, to which the motor drive shaft is coupled by miter gear arrangement of different types, with the drive gear in coaxial relation with the operator output shaft but independently rotatable about it.

Abstract: A check rail lock with a handle pivot shaft secured for pivotal movement with respect to the housing and a cam which pivots with the shaft between an open position with the cam enclosed in the housing and a locking position with the cam extending from the housing for grasping a keeper. An axially reciprocable locking member is associated with the pivot shaft for pivoting therewith, and has a manually engageable button end projecting above the housing and a locking end within the housing. The locking end has circumferentially spaced locking surfaces, and a spring biases the member locking end into engagement with the housing. First and second locking notches in the housing receive the member locking end when the cam and handle are in the open and locking positions, respectively, and the locking notches each have a surface engaging one of the locking end locking surfaces to prevent pivoting of the locking member and pivot shaft when the member locking end is received therein.
Abstract: The device employs Hybrid Pulsed Transformer principles employing a projectile with an internal pay load. The projectile carries a light weight shorted secondary coil or coils constructed of aluminum and the projectile acts as a moving secondary through a plurality of aligned spaced apart transformer primary coils. The moving secondary coil includes a plurality of surrounding channels containing a liquid, such as water, for cooling. The cooling ability of certain liquids, as for example water, associated with change of state between liquid and gas is employed to cool the coil or coils.

Each portion of the bar has at least 80% by weight of its components identical. The opaque portion incorporates a solid particulate opacifying agent. A process is also disclosed wherein a clear composition is poured into a mold to partly fill same. Thereafter, an opaque composition is poured into the remaining volume of the mold, this composition being essentially identical to the clear composition but also including a small amount of solid particulate opacifying agent. Alternatively the opaque composition may be poured first into the mold followed by the clear composition.

Abstract: A system for reducing knock in an internal combustion engine is disclosed and includes a vibration detector which detects engine vibration and generates an output signal representative of the magnitude of the engine vibration over a predetermined frequency spectrum. The vibration output signal multiplied by a first weight factor is integrated over a lower portion of the frequency spectrum to obtain a first value while the vibration signal multiplied by a second weight factor is integrated over a higher portion of the frequency spectrum to obtain a second value. The first value is compared with a first threshold value and, when the first value exceeds the first threshold, the system generates a fuel control output signal to increase the fuel supplied to the engine to reduce engine knock.

Abstract: A neutron detector is formed from a layer of polycrystalline diamond which is deposited by a chemical vapor deposition process. The diamond material contains .sup.10 B as a dopant, in a concentration of 1,000 ppm or less. In one embodiment, the layer of diamond material is deposited on a supporting substrate. Advantageously, the substrate itself may comprise a layer of diamond material. In another embodiment, the substrate comprises a layer of conductive or semiconductive material. The diamond material is deposited on top of the substrate, with at least two regions in contact with the semiconductive material. A central portion of the semiconductive material is etched away, and electrical contacts are applied to the remaining portions of the semiconductive substrate. An advantage of the neutron detector of the invention is that the diamond layer is very thin, less than 50 .mu.m thick, so that the sensitivity of the detector to other radiation, particularly .gamma. radiation, is reduced.

Abstract: A device for aligning and supporting a nutplate against the workpiece to ch it is to be fastened during the entire fastening cycle of an automatic riveting machine. The device has a base that may be mounted on the lower ram of an automatic riveting machine. A nutplate elevator moves vertically within a sleeve extending upwardly from the base. The end of the sleeve supports the workpiece lower surface. A driver anvil has pins that may be forced against the rivet tails in response to motion of the lower ram driving pin.In operation, the lower ram rises, clamping the workpiece between the end of the sleeve and the upper pressure foot. The nutplate elevator is lowered by applying air pressure to the top of a piston, which is contained within the anvil. A nutplate is placed on the elevator. The nutplate is raised by applying air pressure to the bottom of the piston, forcing the nutplate against the workpiece.

Abstract: A window operator has a prime mover for opening and closing of a window, with the prime mover being drivingly connected to a drive output member through an intermediate gear structure. A clutch device in the drive structure senses the torque applied to the drive output member in a window closing operation and a switch operable by the clutch is effective to deenergize the prime mover when the torque applied to the output member reaches a predetermined value. The switch can be adjustably located relative to the clutch whereby the predetermined value at which the motor will be deenergized may be varied in order to obtain a desired tension on a member connected to the closed sash of the window, such as a chain connected to the sash of a skylight window.
