Abstract: A superconducting conductor assembly using high temperature materials. A double-walled tubular structure has at least one helical strip of superconductive material on the inner wall of the inside tube. Brittle, non-ductile superconducting materials may be used. A coolant, typically liquid nitrogen, is circulated between the tubes to maintain the superconductor below the critical temperature of the superconductor. A buffer layer is preferably included between tube wall and superconductor. A plurality of alternating layers of buffer and superconductor may be used.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for improving the flavor of starch by incubating the starch with an enzymatically active peptidase containing cell preparation under such conditions that enzymatic peptidolysis of a substantial amount of oligopeptides in the starch is the result, which incubation is, optionally, preceded or followed by a non-enzymatic purification step such as steam stripping or solvent extraction. The starch is suited for incorporation into food products, such as spreads.

Abstract: Composite microcapsules and a method of making the microcapsules, as well as a tumble drier article incorporating the microcapsules are described. The microcapsules comprise particles made of a emulsifiable mixture of a wax material and a fragrance oil which are embedded in a water soluble polymer. The microcapsules have a diameter of less than about 100 microns and are useful for incorporation in tumble drier articles to control the release of fragrance in the drier and prevent loss of fragrance during processing and storage.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting changes in the structural strength of bonded joint. Changes in one or more dielectric properties of the bonding adhesive, such as resistance and capacitance, are monitored by a microdielectrometer. A change in a bond dielectric measurement is indicative of a moisture intrusion in the bond and a corresponding weakening of the structural integrity of the bond. A warning or indication of the bond degradation is provided in response to such changes.

Abstract: A passive load limiting strut particularly useful in limiting loads between a spacecraft and an upper stage during booster first stage operation and thereby permit the launching of heavier spacecraft. The strut operates on the principle of snap through buckling of bar linkages. A tension shaft is telescoped into a compression shaft within a housing. A plurality of bar linkages are connected between each of the shafts and the housing, the bars being oriented at an acute angle in the direction of the tension shaft. In tension, the bar linkages connected to the tension shaft progressively buckle, absorbing tension loads. In compression, the bars connected to the compression shaft progressively buckle, absorbing compression loads. A compression spring intermediate the ends of the shafts further aids in load relief. Collars on the shafts prevent the shafts moving beyond preselected locations.

Abstract: The present invention is concerned with a stable edible dispersion comprising 95 to 86% by weight of an aqueous phase and 5 to 14% by weight of a continuous fat phase having and N.sub.20 -value of at least 5. It is surprising that, provided suitable processing conditions are applied and a seeding component is employed, stable dispersions containing less than 14% by weight of a continuous fat phase having an N.sub.20 -value of at least 5, and more than 86% by weight of an aqueous phase can be prepared. Another aspect of the present invention is a method of preparing a dispersion comprising 95 to 86% of an aqueous phase and 5 to 14% by weight of a continuous fat phase having an N.sub.20 -value of at least 5, said method comprising cooling and working an emulsion of oil and water, the oil comprising 0.1-4%, by weight of the oil, of a solid seeding component.

Abstract: A direct-sequence spread-spectrum communication system having a receiver that despreads a received signal that has been modulated with a pseudonoise code generated by a linear feedback shift register. The receiver despreads the received signal by multiplying it with a limited number of delayed replicas of the received signal. Despreading is thus performed without need for a locally generated pseudonoise code or a synchronizing clock.

Abstract: A corrosion monitoring system having one or more anode elements made of a suitable anodic material that corrodes preferentially with respect to the structure being protected. The resistance of each anode wire is continuously or periodically monitored. The presence of moisture between an anode and the structure being monitored creates a current path and causes galvanic corrosion. The anode wire will begin to corrode, but the structural members will remain uncorroded until the anode has been completely consumed. The monitoring system uses the rate of change in anode resistance to extrapolate a prediction of the time remaining before the structure being protected begins to corrode.
