Abstract: A woven fabric for ballistic protection is disclosed wherein the fibers in the fill direction exhibit an elongation to break greater than the elongation to break of the fibers in the warp direction.
Abstract: This invention provides a method and a combination for automatically oiling a paper shredder with oil drops when it is running in the reverse direction, and after a predetermined running time in the forward direction.
Abstract: An intermediate film storage device for a section of photographic material of limited length comprises feed rolls, exit rolls, intermediate rolls which separate a first buffer from a second buffer, and a guiding device which guides the section of film from the feed rolls to the intermediate rolls. Such an intermediate film storage device serves to equalize different operating speeds of stations for processing photographic material. In so doing, the activity of the processing stations connected in series ahead of the intermediate film storage device should have to be interrupted only for a short time as the intermediate film storage device is being emptied. The intermediate rolls wind the section of film into the first buffer, and rewind it into the second buffer in the opposite direction of motion and at a higher speed, the motion of the section of film in the second buffer being controlled by an arrangement of buffer rolls.
Abstract: A drainage system for draining bile is provided. The drainage system includes an elongated drainage catheter with distal segment and a proximal segment. The catheter includes a first lumen which extends longitudinally through at least a portion of the distal catheter segment and longitudinally through the entire length of the proximal segment. The catheter also includes a second lumen which extends longitudinally solely through at least a portion of the proximal catheter segment. The system includes a drainage bag adapted for connection to the proximal segment to the drainage catheter. A one-way valve is associated with a drainage bag to allow bile to enter into the bag through the second lumen and to exit from the bag into the first lumen.
Abstract: Cyclobutanols of the formula ##STR1## wherein P is a hydroxy protecting group are useful intermediates in the preparation of antiviral compounds.
Abstract: Disclosed are fluorinated macromonomers containing one or more hydroxy groups, which are useful as monomers in other polymerization. Also disclosed are processes and an intermediate for making such macromonomers, and condensation and free radically made polymers which contain the macromonomers. The macromonomers are useful for modifying the properties of the polymers into which they are incorporated.

Abstract: Assays for farnesyl-protein transferase (FT) which can be used to identify substances that block the farnesylation of ras oncogene products are described. Because farnesylation is required for ras oncogene activity, inhibitory compounds identified in the assays of the invention can block neoplastic transformation mediated by the ras oncogene. The assays of the invention are targeted for a step subsequent to the synthesis of farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP), the donor of the farnesyl residue, and an intermediate in cholesterol synthesis and other important cellular pathways. Therefore, compounds which inhibit ras mediated transformation, yet do not cause major disruptions of important cell pathways that require FPP as an intermediate may be identified using the assays of the invention.
Abstract: A copolyadipamide consisting essentially of between about 60 and about 99.5 mole percent hexamethyleneadipamide units and between about 0.5 and 40 mole percent pentamethyleneadipamide units, the copolyamide having an RV greater than about 25, and a melting point of greater than about 220.degree. C.
Abstract: Copolyamides are prepared by the non-catalytic polymerization of an omega-aminonitrile with a mixture of a diamine and a dicarboxylic acid. Not more than 40% by weight of the product is derived from the omega-aminonitrile.
Abstract: The use of anionic polysilicate microgels with an organic polymer to flocculate pulp and filler fines, such that water removal is easier and fines retention is greater and a new silicated cationic starch composition.
Abstract: An electrocoating composition containing an epoxy amine adduct which is the reaction product of a polyepoxide resin and an amine, an acrylic amine resin and a blocked polyisocyanate crosslinking agent;wherein the composition is prepared by blending a first emulsion of the epoxy amine adduct and the blocked polyisocyanate crosslinking agent with a second emulsion of the acrylic amine resin and a blocked polyisocyanate crosslinking agent; where the first and second emulsions are each individually formed by blending the adduct or resin with the blocked crosslinking agent and then adding an organic acid to form a salt which forms a stable aqueous emulsion.

Abstract: This invention provides an improved process for the manufacture of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane by the reaction of HF and trichloroethylene in the presence of a catalyst to form a mixture comprising 2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane and, optionally, other organic by-products. The improvement resides in conducting the reaction in a single reaction zone while recovering the 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane from the mixture and recycling the 2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane and, optionally, other organic by-products from the mixture to the reaction along with trichloroethylene and HF.
Abstract: Racemic Feist's acid is treated with (R)-(+)-.alpha.-methylbenzylamine to yield (1R-trans)-3-methylenecyclopropane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid, (R)-.alpha.-methylbenzylamine (1:1) salt. This salt can then be converted to (1R-trans)-3-methylene-1,2-cyclopropanedicarboxylic acid, dimethyl ester which is an intermediate in the preparation of the antiviral agent [1R-(1.alpha.,2.beta., 3.alpha.)]-2-amino-9-[2,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)cyclobutyl]-1,9-dihydro-6H-pur in-6-one. The improved process also enables the recovery of racemic Feist's acid from the resolution.

Abstract: Extruded shaped structures of amorphous polyarylate copolymers, having a tensile elongation at break of at least 80% at 25.degree. C., are made by drawing a molten extrudate of the copolymer at a temperature at least 100.degree. C. above the glass transition temperature of the copolymer.
Abstract: A reheat blow mold machine includes a preform loader, an oven, a mold station and a preform transfer mechanism for transporting preforms form the oven to the mold station. A loader defines a plurality of lanes within which the preforms are supported. A reciprocal jaw assembly moves the preforms from a receiving end to a load end of the oven. The oven includes a plurality of tandemly arranged abutting pallets which rotatably support the preforms. The pallets are stepped through the oven and moved between a receiving end and a discharge end by a pair of elevators and a return conveyor. The transfer mechanism includes two sets of jaw assemblies, a pair of slidable actuators and a compensation mechanism to automatically adjust for tolerance variations in the diameter of the performs. A mold station includes a pair of opposed platens which support mold halves. A bottom platen is positioned by a cam arrangement mounted on the opposed platens.
