Abstract: A digital sampling instrument is disclosed. The instrument provides the capability of accessing and outputting stored digital data within a single clock cycle. The instrument also provides improved volume scaling for sound generation and further eliminates redundant loading of a particular sound into a sound memory.

Abstract: A bag opening device for supermarket check-out counters incorporating plastic bag dispensing machines, comprising two slides capable of mutual approaching and departing motion along a horizontal rail in a symmetrical direction with respect to a central position where the plastic bag to be opened is located; on each slide (7,8) is mounted a pair of rollers (1, 1' and 2, 2') in contact with each other, said pair of rollers being operated by a motor-reducer (13, 13') so as to simultaneously rotate the rollers of one pair in an opposite direction compared with the rollers of the other pair, said pairs of rollers being apt to come in contact with the opposite sides of a plastic bag (12) for grasping the sides and then pulling the sides apart, and subsequently to rotate in the opposite direction for releasing the sides of the bag from the grip of the rollers.

Abstract: An improved vapor degreaser characterized by a deep freeboard zone (i.e., freeboard to width ratio of 1.0 to 2.3) containing a three-stage condenser/heat exchanger configuration comprising: a water-cooled lower primary exchanger operating above 32.degree. F. to effect condensation of the bulk of the vapor generated by the boiling sump and a combination of an intermediate exchanger above, but preferably overlapping, the primary exchanger and a dehumidifying third exchanger position just below the top lip of the degreaser, both operating at a temperature below 32.degree. F. (preferably +10.degree. to -30.degree. F.) to effect a reduction in the vapor concentration gradient that controls the rate of vapor diffusion through the freeboard zone. The improved vapor degreaser is particularly useful in reducing vapor losses when using low boiling solvents.

Abstract: An ink for ink jet printers which comprises an aqueous carrier medium, pigment dispersion or dye and a diol penetrant. Abstract: A nucleic acid fragment encoding a herbicide-resistant plant acetolactate synthase protein is disclosed. This nucleic acid fragment contains at least one nucleotide mutation resulting in one amino acid change in one of seven substantially conserved regions of acetolactate synthase amino acid homology. This mutation results in the production of an acetolactate synthase protein which is resistant to sulfonylurea herbicide compounds compared to the wild-type protin. Transformation of herbicide sensitive plants or plant cells with the fragment results in resistance to the herbicide.

Abstract: A neural network for adjusting a setpoint in process control replaces a human operator. The neural network operates in three modes: training, operation, and retraining. In operation, the neural network is trained using training input data along with input data. The input data is from the sensor(s) monitoring the process. The input data is used by the neural network to develop output data. The training input data are the setpoint adjustments made by a human operator. The output data is compared with the training input data to produce error data, which is used to adjust the weights of the neural network so as to train it. After training has been completed, the neural network enters the operation mode. In this mode, the present invention uses the input data to predict output data used to adjust the setpoint supplied to the regulatory controller. Thus, the operator is effectively replaced.

Abstract: Still and moving picture components of a motion video transmission are coded by using the same algorithm.
