  • Patent number: 5150508
Abstract: This invention relates to a machine and a method for forming a unitary structure from a first steel panel having an upturned flange and a second steel panel having a flat edge portion. The machine is comprised of a support surface for receiving the two panels in a nested relation. The support surface, holding the nested panels, is moved to a pre-hem position. The support surface then presses the flange of the first panel against a pre-hem flange engaging member to bend the flange to approximately 45.degree. with respect to the plane of the first panel. The support surface moves the nested panels to a final hem position. The support surface then presses the flange against a final hem engaging member to bend the flange into full engagement with the edge portion of the second panel to form a unitary structure.

  • Patent number: 5150479
Abstract: An improved fireman's helmet is disclosed which includes an outer shell, a compressible, non-resilient foam liner, and an inner shell of hemispherical shape conforming to the foam liner. An annularly extending channel of generally U-shaped cross-section is integrally formed on and around an outer edge portion of the inner liner into which an edge portion of the foam liner is disposed. A series of flexible, stretchable, resilient crossing one another at an apex, extend radially outwardly and downwardly from the apex and extend under and across the channel, thence upwardly between the liner and the outer shell to connections on distal end portions thereof with rigid, non-resilient, incompressible anchors resting on a floor of the channel. The anchors are disposed within open slots formed in and around outer surface portions of the liner.

  • Patent number: 5149316
Abstract: A welding and die cutting device for an apparatus for automatically forming bags on demand from an elongated web of film is selectively switchable between a first operating mode in which the formed bags are provided with unitary handles and a second operating mode in which the formed bags are fully closed and no handles are formed thereon. A first one of a pair of reciprocatable mobile holders carries a welding counter-plate to which is mounted a horizontal blade for transverse cutting and separation of formed bags from the web. A plurality of substantially vertical blades for longitudinally cutting the web to form handles on a bag being formed are carried on and depend outwardly from a bladeholder that is interposed between the first mobile holder and the counter-plate. The bladeholder is slidably and elastically linked to the first mobile holder for movement therewith and relative thereto.

  • Patent number: 5146651
Abstract: Controlling the cross-sectional characteristics of moving tow lines by providing monitors and positioning devices so as to improve stuffer box crimp uniformity. The mass distribution profile of a filamentary tow band is continuously measured as a function of the width of the band, and the information obtained is used to change the position of the band when a deviation from a predetermined value is noted. Positioning devices are used to carry out the movement or adjusting of the band in accordance with a signal so as to correct the deviation and present to a crimping apparatus, such as a stuffer box crimper, a band having a uniform mass distribution profile.
