  • Patent number: 5130166
Abstract: The invention is a process for modifying pore size near the surface of porous materials. The surface is contacted with an alcohol solution of a metal alkoxide which forms a hydrous oxide insoluble in water, an amount of water insufficient to hydrolyze fully the metal alkoxide, and a mineral acid for a time sufficient for the solution to penetrate the surface region but not the bulk. This is followed by exposing to sufficient moisture to complete hydrolysis and then curing to stabilize the metal oxide in the pores near the surface.

  • Patent number: 5130076
Abstract: Melt fabrication, with precompounding, of a plurality of thermoplastic resins, is provided by use of a screw having a dispersion section in such machines as injection molding machines. The minor resin component can be an elastomer, which toughens the resin's major component. This effect is improved by increasing back pressure on the screw used in the injection molding machine, to extend the screw rotation and thus shear time accomplished by the dispersion section.

  • Patent number: 5128233
Abstract: A film support having an auxiliary layer coated over an antistatic layer coated on one side thereof is described. This element, which is particularly useful for the application of subsequently applied photosensitive layers on side opposite said auxiliary layer, comprises gelatin, a crosslinking agent, optionally a conductive polymer and an adhesion promoting amount of an adhesion agent, said adhesion agent selected from the group consisting of: compounds containing at least one --NH.sub.2 group and compounds containing at least two --NH groups, wherein said adhesion agent is sufficiently soluble in water that said adhesion promoting amount of adhesion agent may be dissolved in the dispersion used to coat said auxiliary layer, with the proviso that said adhesion agent is not malonamide. Preferred adhesion agents are urea, thiourea and 2-imidazolidone. Improved adhesion of the auxiliary layer to the antistatic layer is achieved.

  • Patent number: 5127687
Abstract: A tamper-indicating seal of the type having a bolt retained in a lock body, wherein the lock body is surrounded by a shroud of frangible, brittle material and provided with a grooved outer surface and flanged entrance way for receiving and surrounding the bolt end, whereby the shroud is easily fractured, thus providing visual indication of tampering. Visual detection of tampering may be enhanced by a coating applied to the outer surface of the shroud. A surface feature on the between its point of entry into the lock body and its point of entry into the flange is in interfering relationship with a surface feature within the flange, so that an attempted removal of the lock body from the shroud is indicated by cracking, chipping, or fracturing of the flange or the shroud.
