Abstract: High-strength, non-agglomerated uniform porous microspheres of silica produced by spray drying a mixture comprising a colloidal silica sol and an additive selected from ammonium citrate or urea; an attrition resistant catalytic composite consisting essentially of metal crystallites such as palladium, platinum-palladium on said silica microsphere and method for preparing the same; and an improved process for making hydrogen peroxide from the direct combination of hydrogen and oxygen in the presence of said attrition resistant catalytic composite.
Abstract: The present invention is a process for modifying a fluorinated cation exchange membrane by irradiation of the membrane with a sufficient dose of non-spark-producing radiation to decrease the voltage in the use of the membrane for electrolyzing brine.
Abstract: A photographic, silver halide element that can be dried under rapid conditions during coating without deleterious effects on fog, kinks and other surface conditions, is described. This process can function with the addition of a small amount of a high boiling, aromatic alcohol to the emulsion prior to coating. Further improvements are noted with the addition of small amounts of a humectant and a plasticizer. The films resulting from this novel process can be handled without problems in the modern, automatic changing devices, for example.

Abstract: The process in which alkyl glyoxylates are prepared by the catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of the corresponding alkyl glycolates is improved by carrying out the process in at least two adiabatic reaction stages in series, in which no more than about 60 percent of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen is used in the first stage.

Abstract: A process is provided for detecting polymorphisms on the basis of nucleotide differences in random segments of the nucleic acid by performing a primer extension reaction on the nucleic acids and comparing the extension reaction products. The random nucleic acid segment can be amplified by first dissociating the extension product from the template and contacting the dissociated extension product with a primer under conditions such that an amplification extension product is synthesized using the dissociated extension product as a template. Differences in the extension product are useful as markers in constructing genetic maps and as markers to distinguish or identify individuals.

Abstract: A process for preparing images on a tonable, light-sensitive layer in which a transfer layer containing a toner and a core/shell polymer as a binder is used. The core polymer has a glass transition temperature above 50.degree. C. and the shell polymer has a glass transition temperature below 40.degree. C. Such transfer layers are used in proofing processes for high quality printing.

The housing also includes two ends, connected through the wall of the housing, on which the roll is supported in a rotatable manner. Abstract: A coherent optical-fiber transmission system is rendered insensitive to fluctuations of the state of polarization of the electromagnetic field due to propagation along the fiber by varying at the transmitting side the state of polarization of the optical carrier modulated by the information signal to be transmitted. The variation is such that spectral broadening of the intermediate frequency signal at the receiver is kept limited, while reception of half the power outgoing from the fiber is ensured.

Abstract: A method for the formulation and preparation of a heterochromatic paint comprises reacting one or more base mediums containing an anionic cellulose thickener in emulsion with an inorganic salt of a heavy or trivalent metal contained in a reactive medium emulsion. The heterochromatic paint comprises an emulsion containing non-soluble precipitated color particles, and each of the base mediums are of a different color. The inorganic salt is used in an amount sufficient to form dispersed phase reaction products contained in a dispersing phase emulsion and consisting essentially of a non-soluble precipitated color particles. The weight ratio of the dispersed phase to the dispersing phase in the heterochromatic paint is not greater than 0.4:1.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for the preparation of methyl- and ethyl-substituted anilines by contacting anilines of specified formula at about 250.degree.-525.degree. C. and about 10 kPa-10 MPa of pressure in the of presence of a nonbasic metal oxide catalyst which when it is a zeolite has pore dimensions of at least about 0.52 nm and has cages with dimensions greater than about 0.75 nm.
