Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for electrostatically spray coating an article in a coating zone with a liquid coating material, such as paint, wherein air is supplied to the spray head of an air spray gun at an atomizing air flow rate in excess of 5 CFM and at a delivery pressure of less than 15 psi to atomize the liquid coating material. At this combination of relatively low pressure and relatively high volume of air the transfer efficiency is substantially higher than for conventional air spray guns. A turbine unit filters and heats the air so that the air has a temperature in excess of 70.degree. F. at the spray head. An elongated conductive rod is reciprocably supported within a nozzle of the spray head to create an electrical charge differential between the atomized liquid coating material and the article in the coating zone when charged by a high voltage source. Preferably, the rod is positioned within a liquid discharge orifice of the nozzle to alternatively open and close the nozzle.

The apparatus employs a bracket (36) which serves to extend, by cables 52, 54, various functional input terminals at the console to function contacts (44, 46) at the bracket (36). The transceiver (10) includes apparatus (34) for mating the transceiver (10) to the bracket (36). The bracket (36) carries a track (50) for accepting the track rider mating apparatus (34) of the transceiver (10).
Abstract: Mode field radius in single-mode optical fibers is measured by the modulation of an optical beam by means of a spatial filter with radial-distribution of transmittivity of Gaussian type. Modulated beam intensity is measured in correspondence with the beam axis for different widths of the Gaussian curve, and the mode field radius is derived from both such intensity values and a parameter dependent on the Gaussian width.

Abstract: This invention relates to a heat-shrinkable film consisting essentially of a blend of 99.5-98.5 weight % of linear low or medium density polyethylene and 0.5-1.5 weight % of one or more copolymers of ethylene with a monomer selected from vinyl acetate and acrylic acids or esters, where said film has been cross-linked to the degree induced by an irradiation dosage of about 1 to 5 megarads.
Abstract: A constant force perpendicular to the fiber axis is applied to the fiber and is displaced step by step along the fiber axis. The state of polarization of a radiation outgoing from the fiber is determined at each step and the beat-length values are obtained from both the amplitude ratio and the phase difference between the components, along the two birefringence axes, of the electrical field associated with a radiation launched into the fiber.

Abstract: A coating of a viscous lubricant applied prior to stretch-breaking permits forming slivers of stretch-broken carbon fibers. When an anti-static ingredient is added to the viscous lubricant cohesive slivers of stretch-broken glass fibers can be formed. Composites of matrix resin reinforced with these slivers exhibit high strength, tensile stiffness, and good formability.

Abstract: This invention relates to an imaging system with computer-controlled, multiple electronic image acquisition and assembly means for producing a graphical map from a stored wide-field-of-view high-resolution electronic image. The invention displays a contiguous small portion of the stored image within a display window and a cursor is superimposed on the image at a fixed position within the display window. The window can be roamed over the stored image for generating mapping marks from the fixed cursor and the mapping marks a stored in a separate memory.
