Abstract: Microporous polymeric films having good water vapor transmission rates and hydrostatic resistance to the penetration of liquid water are obtained by stretching a composition consisting of a matrix of a thermoplastic orientable polymer having a hydrophobic surface, a glass transition temperature of less than 25.degree. C., a Vicat softening point of more than about 25.degree. C., an ultimate elongation between those two temperatures of at least 100%, and a flexural modulus of less than 200 MPa and a particulate filler having an aspect ratio of less than 3, an average diameter of 0.05-50 m, a negligible attraction to the matrix polymer, and a surface tension no higher than that of the matrix polymer at the latter's melting temperature.Such films are useful in applications involving separation of liquids and vapors, e.g., in making "breathing" waterproof garments or linings.

  • Patent number: 4698438
Abstract: A continuous, close-coupled method for making N-methyl carbamate pesticides which comprises contacting the methyl isocyanate in a vapor phase mixture containing methyl isocyanate and water with a selected oxime or phenol, said mixture being the reaction product formed by oxidizing monomethylformamide. An optional intermediate step for preparing the methyl isocyanate/water vapor phase reaction mixture for contact with the oxime or phenol is to remove therefrom a portion of the water without liquefying the methyl isocyanate by cooling the mixture to a temperature below the dew point of water but above the dew point of the methyl isocyanate.

  • Patent number: 4697339
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for processing the end of cable having a screened, multicore of conductors provided with an outer sheath, and to a connector for the same. The cable is cut to provide an auxiliary sheath tube and an end sheath, both of which are utilized during process to expose and fold the screening. The signal conductors of the cable are connected to the insulated contact block of a connector. The ground terminal of the connector contacts the folded-over screening. The connector includes strain relief means.

  • Patent number: 4697343
Abstract: In a device for cutting shielding of shielded cable, comprising an elongated cable carrier of U-shaped cross-section and an elongated saw carrier hinged to the cable carrier, cable is releasably locked into a lengthwise extending, sidewardly opening groove in the cable carrier by means of a lever pivoted to it and having plural lobes that project radially from the axis about which the lever swings, the lobes having rounded tip portions at different distances from that axis. As the lever is swung in a locking direction one of the lobes, depending upon cable diameter, cammingly engages a cable in the groove defined by the cable carrier and locks it to the cable carrier for cutting.

  • Patent number: 4698402
Abstract: An hydroxy functional epoxy-polyester graft copolymer and solvent-based thermosetting coating composition comprising said copolymer and blocked polyisocyanate crosslinking agent. The coating composition may be formulated as hot sprayable, high solids coating composition suitable for use as chip resistant automotive vehicle primer adapted for use on body panel areas subject to chipping by stones, gravel and other road debris. Alternatively, the composition may be formulated as a high solids composition sprayable with conventional spraying equipment. The hydroxy functional epoxy-polyester graft copolymer is the product of polymerization of certain lactone monomers in the presence of hydroxy functional epoxy amine adduct precursor. The precursor resin is the reaction product of diepoxide with aliphatic diol and, subsequently, with hydroxy functional secondary amine. The polymerization of the lactone monomers is carried out at a temperature between about 50.degree. C. and about 300.degree. C.
