Abstract: A novel CrtZ carotenoid hydroxylase, isolated from Brevundimonas vesicularis DC263, is provided that is useful for the production of hydroxylated carotenoids. Additionally, a previously identified hypothetical protein from Novosphingobium aromaticivorans has found to have carotenoid hydroxylase activity. Both hydroxylase genes exhibit low homology in comparison to other CrtZ hydroxylases previously reported. Expression of the hydroxylases in heterologous host cells enabled production of hydroxylated carotenoids.
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the preparation of a 3-hydroxycarboxylic acid from a 3-hydroxynitrile. More specifically, 3-hydroxyvaleronitrile is converted to 3-hydroxyvaleric acid in high yield at up to 100% conversion, using as an enzyme catalyst 1) nitrile hydratase activity and amidase activity or 2) nitrilase activity of a microbial cell. 3-Hydroxyvaleric acid is used as a substitute for ?-caprolactone in the preparation of highly branched copolyester.

Abstract: A method and system for allowing access to an exchange by a casual user without compromising exchange security. The present invention allows a casual user to provide required input and complete simple business transactions without becoming a registered member of the exchange. The system knows what information to provide to or to collect from the casual user and provides him with a context sensitive personal identification number (CS-PIN) to allow access for that purpose.

Abstract: The invention relates to a multicrystalline laser-crystallized silicon thin layer solar cell deposited on a glass substrate (a), which is configured for illuminating from the substrate side, and to a production method for the cell. Said solar cell comprises a laser-crystallized multicrystalline silicon layer (b1, b2), whose lower layer region (b1), which is situated on the substrate (a) and provided as a nucleation layer and, at the same time, as a lower transparent electrode, is p-doped (alternatively, n-doped). The silicon layer's second layer region (b2), which faces away from the substrate is p-doped (alternatively, n-doped) less than the nucleation layer and serves as an absorber layer. The edge lengths of the crystallites in the multicrystalline layer (b1, b2) are longer than the layer is thick.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to conopeptides termed conkunitzins and their use for blocking the flow of potassium ions through voltage-gated potassium channels. In view of the Kunitz domain in the conkunitzins, they are also useful for inhibiting platelet aggregation and as protease inhibitors.

Abstract: An inventive procurement system includes a requisition system for special item purchases that are not found when searching a catalog database. Using the requisition system the buyer is provided with the desired item while the information associated with the requisition is selectively added to a rule-based knowledge base as well as to an item database. In a preferred embodiment a common language generator has been used to normalize free form data using pre-determined rules to place the data into a class/attribute/value relationship. By having the item requisition follow the same relationship, the pre-determined rules may be updated and the free-form data associated with the item properly coded for inclusion into an item database.

Abstract: Binarization a data value comprises binarizing the minimum of the data value and a predetermined cut-off value in accordance with a first binarization scheme, in order to yield a primary prefix. If the data value is greater than the cut-off value, binarizing a difference of the data value minus the predetermined cut-off value in accordance with a second binarization scheme to obtain a binary suffix, the first binarization scheme being different from the second binarization scheme, and appending the primary suffix to the primary prefix is performed. A very effective compression of data values may be achieved by using the binarization scheme for preparing the syntax elements for the arithmetic coding, the binarization scheme substantially being a combination of two different binarization schemes, and by using binary arithmetic coding instead of m-ary arithmetic coding for coding the binarized syntax elements.

Abstract: A device for quality testing of a body comprising a surface comprising a structuring bounded by edges and a substantially edge-free unevenness, wherein the structuring illustrates a quality impairment and wherein the unevenness illustrates a potential quality impairment, includes a means for generating a height representation, wherein the height representation of the surface includes the structuring and the unevenness. A means for calculating a variation representation calculates the variation associated to the point for every point of the height representation, so that at a boundary of the structuring a high variation is obtained, while at a boundary of the unevenness a low variation is obtained. A means for detecting regions which are potentially quality affecting detects regions as potentially quality-affecting which comprise a variation which is smaller than a predetermined variation threshold value regarding its magnitude.
