  • Patent number: 4588798
Abstract: A process for producing acrylic polymers which have high thermal stability, are free of defects and have a low level of unreacted monomer. The process includes the polymerization at a high production rate of a methyl methacrylate syrup in the presence of a mixture of two peroxide initiators. The first initiator has a 5-minute half-life at temperatures between about 75.degree. C. to 100.degree. C. and emits a maximum of 1 mole of carbon dioxide per 2 moles of free radicals. The second initiator has a one minute half-life at temperatures of between about 105.degree. C. to about 125.degree. C. and emits a maximum of 1 mole of carbon dioxide per 1 mole of free radicals.

  • Patent number: 4588418
Abstract: In a partial oxidation process the gaseous effluent from a reactor is contacted with water to cool and remove solid particulates, i.e., ash and soot. The water from this operation is then mixed with an organic extractant, e.g., naphtha, and fed into a decanter to form aqueous and organic phases. The aqueous phase from the decanter is fed to a water flash separator to remove dissolved gases. The solids in a portion of the water flash separator bottoms are further concentrated in a hydrocyclone and thereafter purged. The remaining water is recycled for recontact with the gaseous effluent.

  • Patent number: 4586438
Abstract: To prevent the rapid escape of high-pressure explosion gases when an explosive charge is initiated in a borehole, the hole is stemmed with chunks of readily liquefiable and/or vaporizable solid material, preferably chunks of ice and/or chunks of dry ice, piled up one upon the other so as to form a columnar bed of pre-solidified stemming material. The column remains in place during the explosion, and thereafter disappears by melting and/or subliming on absorbing heat from the surrounding formation. A preferred stemming column comprises a combination of ice chunks and chunks of dry ice, e.g., wherein the ratio of dry ice to ice in the column decreases with distance from the explosive charge.

  • Patent number: 4587525
Abstract: A dipole phase shifter for use in a phased array antenna includes an insulating substrate having first and second sides. A dipole element having first and second conductive dipole arms is formed on the first side of the insulating substrate and a PIN/NIP diode pair is mounted on the second side of the insulating substrate and electrically-connected to the first and second dipole arms, respectively. A coaxial RF transmission line having a center conductor extending through the insulating substrate connects an input signal to the phase shifter. Quarter-wave transformers are connected between the center conductor and the diodes to compensate for the forward and reverse bias reactances thereof. The first and second dipole arms serve as groundplanes for the quarter-wave transformers. The center conductor also serves as a common bias line which allows forward biasing of one diode and, simultaneously, reverse biasing of the other diode.
