Abstract: A press comprises a frame made up of two crossheads rigidly interconnected y way of uprights with two rams mounted therebetween one above the other. One of the rams has a built-in nut with a non-self-stopping thread to be thereby engaged with a screw rigidly connected to a die holder mounted for rotation in the other ram and geared to a drive for its translatory motion. Forced interaction between the nut and the screw is effected through a drive provided to actuate the ram with the nut and controlled from the drive of the die holder. There is provided a clearance of sufficient size between the rams to permit a specified angle of rotation of the die holder.

Abstract: The dyeability of carpet yarns prepared from random copolymers of nylon 66 and 6-12 wt. % nylon 6 is improved by subjecting the yarn to saturated steam at temperatures close to the melting point of the copolymer. The copolymers used in the invention have an amine end content of 30-80 gram equivalents per 1000 kilograms of polymer and a relative viscosity of 55-85 in filament form.
Abstract: A combing machine for textile fibres has a gill for combing a sliver of fibres, and at least two contrarotating tearing rollers for tearing successive tufts from the sliver of fibres as these are combed, the torn tufts being partially superimposed on each other to form a continuous combed web which is delivered to a conveyor belt. The tearing rollers are in direct contact with each other and are located upstream of the conveyor belt.

Abstract: Antibacterial activity is exhibited by 2-azetidinones having a 3-acylamino substituent and a 1-substituent of the formula ##STR1## (or a salt or ester thereof), wherein Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 are each independently oxygen or sulfur.
Abstract: A vibration sensor device is mounted on a translucent ornamental disc so it can be mounted at any desired position on a window pane so as to achieve the greatest sensitivity without being asthetically offensive. A bracket affixed to the disc mounts a base to which electrical leads are attached to connect the sensor to an alarm control unit. A motion sensing switch is detachably connected to the base to allow easy substitution of switches of different sensitivities. A cover hides the bracket, base, and switch and the whole unit is adhesively attached to the window pane.
Abstract: An improved seal apparatus for a rotary machine including a rotary internal combustion engine. The machine generally comprises a rotor rotatably disposed in a circular working section in a hollow machine housing, a divider valve, and for an internal combustion engine a compression-expansion valve being rotatably secured in the housing and in sealing engagement with the rotor to divide the working space in the housing into an intake space and an exhaust space. The rotor of the machine has a piston formed thereon and the improved seal apparatus includes a plurality of seal bars in recesses between recessed connecting runners in the piston perimeter surface and urged into sealing relation with the inner wall of the housing.

Abstract: In order to obtain substances that are optically transparent in the infrared range, usable in the manufacture of optical fibers or radiation emitters, a metal or metalloid chalcogenide other than an oxide is produced by a double-substitution reaction between a starting chalcogen compound--particularly a hydride such as H.sub.2 S, H.sub.2 Se or H.sub.2 Te--and a salt of the desired metal or metalloid, e.g. a chloride. The starting compound and the reactant salt preferably are vaporized at a temperature below the melting point of the resulting metal chalcogenide which thereupon precipitates in the reaction chamber.

Abstract: A four-wire trunk line of a telephone network, operating with frequency-division multiplexing, is coupled by a hybrid coil to a local two-wire line and is provided, at a location separated from that hybrid coil by frequency modulators and demodulators, with an echo canceler connected across its receiving and transmitting branches. In order to eliminate frequency offset resulting from the incoherent modulation and demodulation, the echo canceler coacts with the phase-roll compensator comprising a phase-locking loop driven, during an acquisition phase, from a digital pilot-tone generator temporarily connected via a digital/analog converter to the receiving branch. The loop includes an analog/digital converter in the transmitting branch receiving the echo of the pilot tone due to hybrid-coil unbalance, a 90.degree.

Abstract: The invention provides an improved cellulosic ester or ether product with a degree of ester or ether substitution of between 2.0 and about 2.9 which is derivatized or further reacted by reaction with an acrylamide reactant to provide pendant acrylamide functionality or substituents at a degree of substitution (D.S.) of at least about 0.05 (preferably from about 0.05 to about 0.5) and to thereby provide a polymerizable organic solvent-soluble product which is insoluble in water and copolymerizable with vinyl monomers. The product is conveniently prepared by reacting said cellulose ether or ester derivative with a catalyst and the acrylamide reactant at a pH of from between about 4.2 and about 4.5. The reaction is carried out at a temperature between 80.degree. C. and 120.degree. C. for from one-half to three hours, while removing the water of reaction.
Abstract: A portable, vented container for dirty oil, of the type having a small fill spout and having increased utility when used in conjunction with a funnel. A vent closure member and a funnel securing latch are integral with the funnel so that when the funnel is inverted and positioned in surmounting relation to the container, the vent closure member closes the vent and the securing latch is engaged by a fill spout cap which engagement secures the funnel against movement and hence maintains the vent closure as well. Removal of the fill spout cap releases the funnel, and positioning the funnel into its operative position relative to an automotive oil drain plug separates the vent closure portion of the funnel from the vent. An elongate extension member having a flexible medial portion is further provided.
Abstract: A process for preparing a symmetrical dinitrodiphenyl ether from o- or p-nitrochlorobenzene or o- or p-nitrofluorobenzene comprising using a polar organic solvent, a potassium salt of a fatty carboxylic acid containing 2 to 20 carbon atoms or a potassium salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid containing 7 to 12 carbon atoms as catalyst, and either sodium or potassium carbonate to react with the p-nitrochlorobenzene. The reaction is carried out at from 150.degree. to 210.degree. C. until the o- or p-nitrochlorobenzene or o- or p-nitrofluorobenzene reacts.
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for preparing a one-phase, solid, controlled release pesticidal composition, said process comprising simultaneously mixing and heating a mixture of a copolymer of a hydrophobic barrier monomer and an unsaturated monomer dicarboxylic acid, a pesticide and a cross-linking agent to a temperature of about 60.degree. to 150.degree. C. but below the decomposition temperature of the pesticide until a homogenous melt is produced, followed by cooling.
Abstract: Perfluoro-1,3-dioxole is a useful monomer, which polymerizes to either amorphous or liquid homopolymers and copolymerizes with tetrafluoroethylene as well as with other monomers to both crystalline and amorphous copolymers having one or more such comonomers incorporated therein. Amorphous homopolymers and copolymers of perfluoro-1,3-dioxole are useful in such applications as glazing for reactors for hydrogen fluoride reactions. Amorphous homopolymers and amorphous or crystalline copolymers form self-supporting films and can be used for coatings and linings which are inert to most chemicals and are stain and weather resistant and as dielectrics for electrical and electronic equipment. Liquid homopolymers can be used as hydraulic fluids and heat exchange media.
