  • Patent number: 4555278
Abstract: Explosives that are sensitized blends of a water-in-oil emulsion and inorganic nitrate, e.g., AN, particles, such as AN or ANFO prills, have improved stability when their structure hinders the loss of water from the aqueous emulsion phase and transportation of such water across the oil phase to the nitrate particles. Use of an anionic emulsifying agent comprising a fatty acid salt, e.g., as formed in situ during the formation of the emulsion, is the preferred way of forming such a blend-stabilizing structure. Emulsion/nitrate blends stabilized in this manner make satisfactory storage-stable packaged products. Emulsion/nitrate blends made with a new low-viscosity emulsion containing essentially all of the oil required to oxygen-balance the blend and a proportionately larger amount of anionic emulsifying agent to stabilize the emulsion structure constitute preferred bulk products owing to their greater adaptability to pumping.

  • Patent number: 4555782
Abstract: An SS/TDMA communication system comprises a multiplicity of ground stations, including one master station and a number of traffic stations without control function, exchanging digitized voice or other message signals via a relay station aboard a satellite. Each ground station comprises base-band equipment including a transmitting section, a receiving section and a control unit. The control unit of the master station generates outgoing timing signals and processes incoming timing signals for synchronizing the operations of its own equipment and that of the traffic stations with the operation of a switching unit of the satellite-borne relay station; this control unit also emits routing instructions for that switching unit.

  • Patent number: 4553841
Abstract: A body transparent to laser radiation, such as an optical fiber or a preform thereof in the process of manufacture, is transluminated by a monochromatic beam of a frequency in the THz range split off from a composite laser beam with two closely spaced frequencies produced by the Zeeman effect. Another monochromatic beam of the second laser frequency bypasses the transparent body and is photoelectrically recombined with the first beam to provide an electrical measuring wave at a beat frequency in the MHz range differing in phase from an electrical reference wave of the same beat frequency, similarly derived from the original laser beam, to an extent determined by the refractive index and the thickness of the transluminated body. Two or more phase comparisons are made with different angles of incidence of the transluminating beam and their results are compared for an arithmetic determination of refractive index and thickness.

  • Patent number: 4552278
Abstract: A separate capping assembly for a centrifuge tube includes a stopper having a plug adapted for close fitting receipt on the interior of the neck of the tube being sealed and a complimentary tubular sleeve sized for close fitting receipt over the exterior of the tube neck. The sleeve is responsive to a radially inwardly directed force by deformably crimping to compress the material of the neck of the bottle into an annular seal defined between the plug and the sleeve. The annular seal so formed resists fluid leakage from the interior of the tube during centrifugation of the tube.
