Abstract: One of the two knife holder shafts in a cross cutter for webs of paper or the like is driven by a unit wherein a motor rotates the input shaft of a bevel gear drive whose output shaft drives or constitutes one shaft of a universal joint. The other shaft of the universal joint is driven by the one shaft and transmits torque to the knife holder shaft or shafts by way of a step-up gear transmission and a clutch which allows for changes in angular positions of the knife holder shafts with reference to the universal joint. An extension of the axis of the input shaft of the bevel gear drive intersects the axes of the shafts of the universal joint at the point where the axes of the shafts of the universal joint intersect each other. To this end, the other shaft of the universal joint contains an elastically deformable but torsion-resistant insert.

Abstract: A process is provided for making a liquid composition of a perfluorinated polymer having sulfonic acid or sulfonate groups in a liquid medium by contacting the polymer with a mixture of 25 to 100% by weight of water and 0 to 75% by weight of a second liquid component such as a lower alcohol, e.g., propanol or methanol, at a temperature of at least 180.degree. C. (at least 240.degree. C. when about 90% to 100% water is used), in a closed system. The liquid composition made by this process, or modified liquid products prepared therefrom, are used in coating various substrates, in casting films, and in repairing perfluorinated ion exchange films and membranes. The process is also useful in recovering perfluorinated polymer having sulfonic acid or sulfonate groups from scrap and used articles made of such polymer or containing such polymer as a component part thereof.

Abstract: The engine disclosed herein comprises a number of pairs of pistons, the two pistons in each pair acting in unison and the number of pairs being arranged parallel to each other and said pistons also being positioned parallel to and in a circle around the mainshaft which has a cam lobe located at a convenient part of the mainshaft and encircling the mainshaft. The cam lobe has opposite surfaces which have rises and dips, or in other words, sinusoidal surfaces, and are in contact with pairs of bearings attached to connecting rods, these bearings being on opposite sides of the cam lobe and at one time being driven in one direction by one of the two pistons in each pair and then at another time in the opposite direction by the other piston in that pair, the two pistons of that pair being connected to each other by the same connecting rod carrying the bearings which press against the cam lobe.
Abstract: Vertical gel electrophoresis apparatus of the type wherein the gel is cast in a horizontal position using an extending top wall to define an end of the casting chamber, is improved by making the top wall removable to allow access to sample slots in the gel from directly overhead and to provide for attachment of a syringe holder at the position of the removed wall.

Abstract: An ultrasonic vibrator of the type used to atomize liquid is used for applying liquid finish to a moving threadline. The liquid is supplied to a through passage in the tip of the horn of the vibrator in which it is atomized and applied to the threadline which is moving through the passage in the tip of the horn.
Abstract: Photosensitive elastomeric compositions comprising about 40 to 90 weight percent of a heat workable, carboxyl- and sulfur-containing polymer of a diene; about 2 to 50 weight percent of a nongaseous, ethylenically unsaturated compound; and about 0.001 to 10 weight percent of a radical generating system; the compositions being useful for making flexographic printing plates.
Abstract: Missiles located in the deeper (hard rock) portion of a shaft or tunnel are protected from damage during a nuclear attack by a mass of ice, preferably trumpet-shaped, located in the outermost portion (e.g., 600-900 meters). When missile egress is required, an ice-supported passageway is bored through the ice, preferably by melting. The trumpet shape assures a straight path for missile egress even if the shaft or tunnel should become transversely displaced by a cratering explosion against the surface.
Abstract: An elastomeric composition comprising an EPDM copolymer rubber; a sulfur curative for the copolymer rubber; about 5-15 parts by weight per 100 parts copolymer rubber of a chlorosulfonated polyolefin which contains 20-50 weight percent chlorine and 0.2-1.5 weight percent sulfur; and about 0.25-1 parts by weight per 100 parts copolymer rubber of a diamine-generating curing agent.
Abstract: Novel fluorodioxoles which may have Cl or F substituents in the 4 or 5 positions and have two F or CF.sub.3 substituents in the 2 position are useful monomers for the preparation of homopolymers and copolymers with tetrafluoroethylene and terpolymers with tetrafluoroethylene and vinylidene fluoride. The homopolymers are suitable for glazing materials, while copolymers are useful, among others, for corrosion-resistant seals, gaskets, and linings.

Abstract: The yield of hydroxyacetic acid produced from formaldehyde, water and carbon monoxide in the presence of a sulfuric acid catalyst and using crude recycled hydroxyacetic acid as the reaction medium is improved by azeotropic distillation of crude, recycle hydroxyacetic acid with toluene. The distillation step reduces the water content of feed thereby increases conversion of formaldehyde to hydroxyacetic acid and reduces formic acid content in the product.
