Abstract: Network preforms for battery grids are prepared from cross-lapped assemblages of spaced bundles of inorganic filaments which are bonded at crossover points by ice.
Abstract: A game-playing method and apparatus, which includes a frame, one or more sets of balls, and a series of at least three wheels rotatably mounted adjacent to each other on the frame in a common horizontal plane. Each wheel includes a plurality of peripheral ball-carrying pockets having outwardly facing openings. A mechanism mounted in the frame effects continuous rotation of the wheels automatically circulating the balls from wheel to wheel in continuous movement. In particular, the balls are retained in the pockets of a rotating wheel except at transfer zones to adjacent wheels. A ball tends to move out of its pocket whenever it comes to a transfer zone and to pass through that zone to a receiving pocket on the adjacent wheel. If the receiving pocket is already occupied by another ball, no transfer occurs. A manually-actuated stop-gate enables a player to directly control the transfer of balls by blocking or unblocking at least one transfer zone.

Abstract: N-(heterocyclicaminocarbonyl)arylsulfonamides in which the aryl radical is substituted in the 2-position by a carboxy radical, ester, thioester, or amide thereof; e.g. N-[(4,6-dimethylpyrimidin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-2-methoxycarbonylbenzenesulf onamide or N-[(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-2-methoxycarbonylbenze nesulfonamide; are useful for the regulation of plant growth and as pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides.
Abstract: The compounds are of the class of aryl esters of N-[(heterocyclic)aminocarbonyl]sulfamic acid, such as N-[(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]sulfamic acid, (2-methylsulfonyloxy)-phenyl ester, useful for weed control in crops, brush control and plant growth retardation.
Abstract: A rotary valve for controlling flow of pulverulent solids has diametrically opposed obturators carried on a rotary support and cooperating with respective valve ports in an internal circumferential surface of a cylindrical valve body, the obturators being movable radially and urged by springs against the internal surface of the valve body so as to make a good seal when the valve is closed, while permitting unobstructed flow of material when the valve is open.

Abstract: Metallization suitable for making printed thick film terminations comprising an admixture of finely divided particles of palladium/silver as the conductive phase and bismuth-free low-melting, low viscosity devitrifiable glass as the binder phase. The composition optionally contains a spinel-forming metal oxide to raise substrate adhesion.
Abstract: Fluorinated carbamoyl sulfides, such as N,N'[thiobis[(methylimino)carbonyloxy]]bis[2,2,2-trifluoroethanimidothioic acid], dimethyl ester, useful for control of insects.
Abstract: Polybenzimidazoles are prepared in the form of small particles by reaction of bis(o-diamine) substituted compounds with dicarboxylic acids or of o-diamino-substituted carboxylic acids in the presence of an inert, nonsolvent, liquid medium and polyphosphoric acid.
Abstract: A process of reacting a ring carbon atom of an aromatic compound Ar with a compound of the formula H.sub.2 NCH.dbd.NH.sub.2.sup.+ CH.sub.3 CO.sub.2.sup.-, and an anhydride which has the ##STR1## at from 10.degree. to 200.degree. C. and preferably 25.degree. to 40.degree. C. to form a compound of the formula ##STR2## where m is 1, 2 or 3, and A is H or F. In the case where m is 1 the compound ##STR3## can be hydrolyzed to ArCHO.
Abstract: A storable cement product is a dry mixture of magnesium oxide (MgO) and aluminum phosphate, or a product containing MgO and, separated therefrom, an aqueous aluminum phosphate solution, some or all of an inert aggregate component optionally being present in either product. In 45-kg samples, the mortar formed when the MgO, phosphate, water, and aggregate are combined attains an exotherm in the range of about 40.degree.-90.degree. C. after an interval of 10 minutes. The mortar hardens quickly thereafter, and is uniquely suited for patching roads under varying conditions of application and use. The reaction exotherm is controlled by a unique combination of the concentrations of the four critical components, and the surface area and particle size of the MgO.
Abstract: A cutting device used in conjunction with an apparatus for processing a continuously advancing strand material is actuated by an air cylinder that is preloaded to full pressure before moving the blade to cut the strand. An air activated linkage releases the cutting blade to begin its travel under full operating pressure.

Abstract: To improve adhesion of a hydrophilic photographic emulsion to a hydrophobic polyester film base the latter is energy-treated as by electrical discharge or flame treatment, and then given a sub-coating composed of an aqueous dispersion of a copolyester modified with a sulfonated aromatic compound.
Abstract: A coating thickness gauge employs a permanent magnet suspended on a coil spring within a pencil shaped housing; the spring being attached to a slide which encircles the housing aid is manually slidable along the length of the housing to adjust the tension of the spring exerted on the magnet. The end of the magnet projects through the end of the housing in contact with a coating deposited on a ferromagnetic base so that the thickness of the coating is measured in terms of the spring tension exerted when the side is moved to pull the magnet away from the coating and this thickness can be read on a scale mounted along the length of the housing. The slide can be provided with internal resilient friction rings or an internal expandable friction element can be placed in the housing to resist inadvertent movement of the slide and an internal stop can be employed to prevent bouncing of the magnet to displace the slide.

Abstract: Optical apparatus for biocular viewing of relatively low cost and light weight comprises a solid Cassegrain configuration in a solid meniscus element having a negative lens element cemented to its convex face and an associated corrector lens element which provide a magnified collimated image of an object for viewing by a pair of telescopes having light folding means to provide an exit pupil separation suitable for two eye viewing. At least some of the lens elements may be of plastics material and aspheric surfaces may be employed. The apparatus is particularly useful for night vision goggles having a single image intensifier tube.
Abstract: Olefinic compounds are made from their vicinally chlorinated organic precursors by dechlorination with metallic magnesium in the presence of a mercury-based promoter, which may be a water-soluble mercury salt or metallic mercury, and of a catalytic amount of iodine. This process is particularly suitable for dechlorinating 4,5-dichloro-dioxolanes to the corresponding dioxoles. 4,5-Difluoro-2,2 bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxole, which can be made by this process in a reproducible manner from 4,5-dichloro-4,5-difluoro-2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxolane, is a useful monomer for making amorphous homopolymers and copolymers with tetrafluoroethylene, which are well suited for wire coating, finishes, and transparent glazing for corrosive service.
