Abstract: Process for making alkyl-.omega.-fluoroformyl esters of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is CH.sub.3 or C.sub.2 H.sub.5 and n is 0 or an integer from 1 to 3, by reacting the methyl or ethyl ester of trifluoropyruvic acid with hexafluoropropene oxide in the presence of fluoride ion catalyst, in an aprotic liquid medium; and the ester wherein n=0.
Abstract: Presence and location of infrared radiation-absorbing or emitting gases in the atmosphere can be ascertained by means of an infrared imaging-analyzing means which views a given scene and receives infrared radiation therefrom. Analytic and reference beams are produced, the latter having reduced sensitivity to the gas of interest, and are converted to electric signals, which are processed in real time to provide a signal corresponding to their ratio. This ratio signal is further processed to generate an image, which can be displayed and viewed. This technique is particularly suitable for surveying large areas for seepage of methane or other hydrocarbon gases from underground gas and/or oil deposits.
Abstract: A composition and method which provides a compound of the formula I: ##STR1## wherein either R.sub.1 is ethyl or vinyl. n is an integer from 2 to 5 and each of R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is alkyl of 1 to 10 carbon atoms. Also provided is a hypochlorite scavenger in solution with the formula I compound which stabilizes the compound against oxidation by sodium hypochlorite.A preferred solution contains the compound of formula I wherein R.sub.1 is vinyl, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are ethyl as a salt of hydrogen fumarate i.e. tiamulin hydrogen fumarate. The solution is added to drinking water which is fed to farm animals as treatment for mycoplasma infection.

Abstract: A shelving system (10) includes diagonal braces (46) which extend between posts (12) and cross members (36) which transversely interconnect the posts (12). The lower end portion (50) of brace (46) is formed in the shape of a hook to extend through a slot (18) and engage with post face wall (20). Brace (46) also includes an elongate, planer intermediate portion (48) and an upper end portion (58) extending transversely to intermediate portion (48) to extend through a diagonal slot (56) formed in cross member (36). Brace upper end portion (54) includes a transverse tab (60) which can be bent over once end portion (54) is inserted through slot (56) to thereby securely lock brace (46) engaged with cross member (36).
Abstract: It has been discovered that the combination of certain polyvalent metal ions with certain proteinaceous foaming agents will significantly enhance the efficacy of proteinaceous foaming compositions. The present invention affords the means for achieving significantly improved protein foam from vegetable protein hydrolyzates which normally fail to possess the foaming efficacy of conventional proteinaceous foam agents such as egg albumen and caseinates. The improved foamed products may be obtained by employing a combination of polyvalent ions such as calcium and zinc with enzymatically hydrolyzed soy protein whipping agents which are characterized as being soluble throughout the pH 4 to 7 range. The proteinaceous foaming composition may be utilized for a variety of industrial and food applications. The present foaming compositions are particularly useful in providing coated paper products.
Abstract: In order to improve the transmission characteristics of optical fibers drawn from the preforms manufactured by vapor deposition of silica on an inner wall surface of a supporting tube of glass, the tube is subjected to a two-stage heat treatment with deuterium whereby OH.sup.- groups at least on the inner tube surface are isotopically replaced by OD.sup.- groups. This pretreatment can be carried out in the same apparatus which is subsequently used for producing the preform.

Abstract: A centrifugal pump with a housing which has circular shape in the direction of the circumference and which has on its circumference an exit tube commencing at an exit port tangentially with reference to the flow, where the length of the exit port in the direction of the housing's circumference is about .pi./4R and where the outer wall of the exit tube constitutes a diverging bulge on outward transition from the circumference. The outer wall of the exit tube, projecting under an angle about 45 degrees from the circumference of the housing, consists of an arc having the center of its radius (r) approximately at the juncture of the opposite wall of the exit tube and the housing circumference.
Abstract: A typewriter (not illustrated) using a daisy wheel as the type carrying member and having a unit which drives the daisy wheel element to rotate about its axis and a device for coupling the daisy wheel element onto the drive unit. The coupling device substantially comprises a pin which engages a hole in the daisy wheel element; first resilient means carried by the unit and operable to transmit to the daisy wheel element an axial thrust in a first direction; second resilient means operable to transmit to the daisy wheel element an axial thrust in a direction opposite the thrust generated by the first mentioned means; and manual control means which act on the said second resilient means in such a way as to compensate, if actuated, the thrust generated by such second resilient means.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a substantially dust-free PVA powder comprising contacting the PVA with about 0.5 percent to 4.0 percent polyglycol, preferably about 0.5 percent to 2.0 percent polyglycol, based on the weight of the PVA, and the product therefrom.
Abstract: An air-dry acrylic lacquer capable of forming a low-color, non-yellowing finish with excellent adhesion to either lacquer or enamel-coated substrates is provided. The lacquer is composed primarily of poly(methyl methacrylate), a methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/t-butylaminoethyl methacrylate terpolymer, cellulose acetate butyrate, and a polyester plasticizer. Ordinarily, the lacquer is nonpigmented and provides a clear, glossy and durable film useful as the clear coat of a color coat/clear coat automotive finish.
Abstract: A method and an implementation are disclosed for measuring the contents of a certain component (e.g. a hormone) in a biological fluid. The basic principle of the method is that a complex is formed starting from the antagonist of the component sought for with the product of conjugation of the latter with a tracer (e.g. a radioisotope), said complex is introduced in the biological fluid to be tested and the quantity of the tracer which has been set free is measured with a measuring or dosing technique which is appropriate for the tracer which has been selected.

Abstract: An annular elastomeric seal-ring construction having a body adapted for stabilized retention in a circumferential seal-ring groove in one of two relatively rotatable members and for circumferentially continuous resilient contact with an opposed wiping surface of the other member. The resilient wiping contact is established via an integral rib of width less than body width, wherein the locus of the rib undulates axially as a function of azimuth about the axis of the ring body.
Abstract: A composition is provided for washing fabric, particularly denim, prior to sale. The composition includes an amphoteric surfactant, a builder which ensures that the surfactant in a washing solution, is initially in an anionic state, and a pH builder which causes the pH of the washing solution to decrease to thereby change the amphoteric surfactant to its cationic state. In its anionic state the surfactant acts as a wetting agent to encourage such actions as pre-shrinking and dye-bleeding by the washing solution. In its cationic state the surfactant can be adsorbed onto the fabric so as to exhibit fabric softening and anti-static effects. A lubricant is preferably included in the composition to reduce uneven dye-bleeding caused by fabric to fabric abrasion in the wash cycle.
Abstract: An apparatus for diverting a wide, continuously advancing film. The apparatus includes a first jet device for forwarding a broken film from the tenter oven to a second jet device which, in turn, routes the film to waste with no reduction in line speed.
Abstract: Ostomy pouches are manufactured by partially contour welding two pouch walls one of which has a stoma aperture over an area extending from the top edge of the pouch past the region of the weld seam around the aperture. A separator member is inserted into the partially welded pouch and an adhesive label is then welded or bonded to the pouch wall around the aperture. The separator member is withdrawn and the contour welding is completed to form the completed pouch.
