Abstract: A long, thin annular belt-like channel can be used in sedimentation field flow fractionation. A rotating seal is required to couple fluids to the channel inlet and from the channel outlet. A flexible shaft is used to drive the rotating seal and thereby decouple rotor vibrations, which cause can leakage, from the rotating seal.

Abstract: The mass center of a field flow fractionation channel is adjusted to coincide with the geometric center of the channel. Under these conditions, above critical rotor speeds, the mass center will coincide with the geometric center of the channel and both will coincide with the spin axis of the rotor. This ensures that all portions of the field flow fractionation channel are subjected to about the same centrifugal force.
Abstract: An apparatus for handling incoming signals from sensors monitoring the state of certain points of a telephone circuit as well as outgoing signals for drivers associated with other circuit points includes a preprocessor PE inserted between the assembly DR of sensors and drivers, on the one hand, and a processor EL, on the other hand. The preprocessor and the processor have access, through a bus 5, to a common memory ME having areas allocated to the scanning of the circuit points, to time-counting operations and to the storage of messages from the preprocessor. A microprogram memory in the preprocessor, when addressed by a sequencer CM started automatically, manually or in response to an instruction from the processor, initiates a temporary seizure of the bus--if the latter is available--whereupon an initial address is delivered from the common memory ME to a working memory ML in the preprocessor to start the scanning of successive pairs of circuit points.

Abstract: A working machine which is intended for demolishing and excavating work comprises a chassis, an upper part carried by said chassis and arranged for rotational movement relative thereto about a vertical axis, and an arm arrangement carried by the upper part and including a jib structure which is connected at one end thereof to the upper part and the other end of which carries, via an intermediate arm, a fitting for a tool, such as an excavator bucket, a chiseling device or like tool. The jib structure and the intermediate arm are connected to the upper part and to each other respectively via pivots and can be pivoted in a vertical plane by means of first and second pressure piston-cylinder devices active between the upper part and the jib structure and between the jib structure and the intermediate arm respectively. The jib structure is divided into a first, short jib section which is pivotally connected to the upper part, and a second, longer jib section which is pivotally connected to the first jib section.
Abstract: Process for oxidatively carbonylating toluene to toluic acid, at least 50 mol % of the toluic acid being the p-isomer, said process comprising contacting and reacting, at 110.degree.-250.degree. C., at a pressure of at least 500 psi (3.45 MPa), toluene, carbon monoxide, oxygen and the catalyst ingredients consisting essentially of(a) a compound of rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, platinum, palladium or osmium;(b) a sulfur oxy-acid or a Group Ia or IIa metal salt of a sulfur oxy-acid; and(c) an acid or acid mixture having a Hammett acidity value (-H.sub.o) of greater than 7.0,said catalyst ingredients containing 0.5-30 mol % of (a) and 70-99.5 mol % of (b+c), with the molar ratios of (b/a) and (c/a) each being at least 2, and recovering toluic acid.
Abstract: A plurality of fire, smoke, security or other detectors of the type which respond to the existence of a predetermined condition are each connected to an input module which monitors the state of the detectors. The input module is connected to an alarm module and when a predetermined number of detectors simultaneously detect the existence of fire, smoke or a breach in security or the like, the alarm module provides a suitable pre-selected command to sound an alarm, commence an interlock and/or activate a predetermined management decision to activate other devices for fire or security protection, such as the automatic discharge of an extinguishing agent, etc. The alarm module may provide different commands depending upon the number of detectors which are simultaneously triggered. In addition, certain preselected detectors may cause the alarm module to provide a command signal regardless of the number of detectors which are simultaneously triggered.
Abstract: Improved process for forming multicolor proofs by laminating to a receptor a positive-working photopolymer element having an electrical discharge treated polyethylene terephthalate support bearing a photopolymerizable layer containing a monomeric component of or mixture of monomeric components as defined; a compatible polymeric acrylate binder and optionally a polyvinyl acetate binder, the weight ratio of polyvinyl acetate to acrylate binder being less than 4 to 3, and an initiator or initiator system; exposing the layer imagewise; removing the support, applying and distributing colorant, removing the colorant in the exposed areas and repeating the steps at least once with another photopolymer element, the lamination being to the previously laminated element.
Abstract: Purified hexafluoropropylene oxide is produced by scrubbing to remove impurities that inhibit polymerization of hexafluoropropylene oxide, thus permitting the preparation of polymers having a degree of polymerization of more than 200, including end-capped and chain-extended derivatives thereof.
Abstract: This invention is directed to compounds of the formula ##STR1## and various intermediates therefore. The final products possess useful hypotensive activity.
Abstract: A system of automatically controlling the size of thermoplastic blown film to minimize scrap generation by guiding the bubble at an elevation above the melting point of the bubble, to keep it centered above the extrusion die, sensing when the bubble is too wide or too narrow and automatically actuating a means to selectively remove or deliver gas or air to or from the bubble to return the bubble to the predetermined desired diameter of width and sensing when the predetermined diameter or width is obtained.
Abstract: A motor brake control system for use on a motor having a motor brake retarder and a throttle fuel control is designed to respond to manual selection for sequentially retarding the selected cylinders in the motor. A transducer for sensing the speed of the motor is provided for generating a series of output pulses which access a high RPM detector and a low RPM detector. In the event that the motor exceeds a predetermined high RPM value, the brake control system activates all of the retarders to fully brake the motor. In the event that the brake retarders are on, either fully or partially, and the motor drops below a predetermined low RPM value, the brake retarders are released. Provision is made to prevent retardation of the motor as long as the throttle of the motor is being activated and retardation is further prevented after deactivation of the throttle until the fuel in the fuel delivery system has been consumed.
Abstract: A photosensitive element which comprises a support bearing a layer of negative-working tonable photoimaging composition comprising at least one organic polymeric binder (a), a photosensitizer (b) which generates an acid upon absorption of actinic radiation, and at least one compound taken from the group of ##STR1## as defined, binder (a) being plasticized by the decomposition product of either compound (c) or (d) or the combination thereof. The photosensitive element is useful in making color proofs.
Abstract: An improved photosensitive element for producing reverse solvent developed images comprising a cover sheet, a photoadherent layer, and a solvent-soluble, non-tonable contiguous layer for photomechanical applications.
Abstract: A digitally operating telephone exchange, especially one serving an area of low subscriber density, comprises a multiplicity of control units of substantially identical structure programmed to carry out different functions in the establishment and termination of communication among associated subscriber stations. The several control units communicate with one another, and with the subscriber stations, through a common PCM coupling network with the aid of an access unit also having a similar structure. One control unit dialogues with a higher-ranking central office for communication with subscriber stations outside the area served by the exchange.

Abstract: An optical fiber connector having two half-round holding members mounted in a central coupler. The half-round members have flat mating surfaces with an opposed longitudinal V-groove for receiving fiber ends of either similar or dissimilar diameters. The opposed fibers spread the holding members away from each other; an elastic member retains the holding members in opposed relationship.
Abstract: The weatherability and durability of clear coat/color coat finishes can be significantly increased by incorporating one or more ultraviolet light stabilizers into the color coat.
