  • Patent number: 4352182
Abstract: A device for analyzing the quality of digital speech-transmission equipment, specifically a speech coder, comprises generators of white-noise signals, sinusoidal signals, frequency-shaped signals and artificial speech-like signals connected to the coder and to an adaptive transversal filter in parallel therewith. The filter and the coder feed output signals to a subtractor which produces an error or noise signal by deducting digital samples of the filter output signal from corresponding samples of the coder output signal. The error signal is fed back to the filter during a first testing phase to control the periodic modification of weighting coefficients computed by a multiplicity of updating cells in the filter for multiplicative combination with incoming samples of the test signal. The first phase ends when the coefficients converge to fixed values representative of the linear characteristics of the coder and the error signal assumes a substantially constant near-zero level.

  • Patent number: 4351755
Abstract: Low molecular weight polydisperse isocyanate-functional acrylic polymers are provided which contain terminal monosulfide groups on at least 10% by number of polymer molecules but are substantially free of toxic monomeric isocyanates. The polymers are prepared by direct reaction of the monomers, e.g., 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate, in the presence of a mercaptan chain-transfer agent and a polymerization initiator but in the substantial absence of water and of Lewis-type bases. They can be crosslinked and are useful in a variety of applications such as moisture-curing coating compositions.

  • Patent number: 4350446
Abstract: A calorimetric differential thermal analyzer uses a planar thermoelectric sheet as its major heat flow path for transferring heat from a heat source to both the reference and sample positions. The heat source is connected to each of the positions by equivalent thermal paths formed by the sheet itself. These paths to each test position are made thermally equivalent by making them geometrically similar and forming isothermal boundaries on the sheet itself between each of the test positions. These isothermal boundaries are connected to the heat source and formed of a material having a high thermal conductance. The thermal equivalency of the paths may be enhanced by removing portions of the sheetlike material to form well defined patterns of heat flow in the sheet; e.g., structures in which the sheet is formed into radial arms in a wheel-like array with each test position being on a different spoke of the wheel.

  • Patent number: 4349984
Abstract: A simple preschool assembly toy for young children which comprises at least three relatively large parts that are assembled together by the child to provide a representation of a recognizable object such as a toy vehicle and driver. A first and a second part are positioned adjacent to one another and include mechanically inter-engaging elements which limits relative movement between these parts only in a first direction, while allowing them to be separated in a second direction generally transverse to the first direction. A third part is positionable adjacent to the other parts, and second inter-engaging elements are provided on the third part and one of the other parts to limit relative movement between the parts in the second direction. The second inter-engaging elements may be engaged and disengaged by motion only in the second direction; as for example by the provision of magnets.

  • Patent number: RE31043
Abstract: The ion beam from a field desorption source in a double focusing magnetic mass spectrometer is monitored by disabling the electric sector of the mass analyzer such that the ion beam is not deflected. An opening is provided in the wall of the electric sector such that the undeflected ion beam may pass therethrough to a detector. This permits the characteristics of the field desorption source to be ascertained more quickly and easily so that a mass analysis may be performed. The monitor may be operated automatically to vary a characteristic of the field desorption source until ions are detected. Thereafter, the electric sector is energized and an analysis performed.
