Abstract: A method and a related apparatus for monitoring an external surface of stranded cables, such as submarine cables for optical telecommunications, and electrical energy cables, provide for telemetrically acquiring a profile of the cable external surface by means of a laser optical triangulation technique, obtaining a spectrum of the telemetrically-acquired profile and comparing the obtained spectrum to a previously measured reference spectrum corresponding to a cable free of defects, thereby deducing the presence of defects by differences in the spectra.

Abstract: A high flux in conversion of pyruvate to acetolactate was achieved in yeast through expression of acetolactate synthase in the cytosol in conjunction with reduction in pyruvate decarboxylase activity. Additional manipulations to improve flux to acetolactate are reduced pyruvate dehydrogenase activity and reduced glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity. Production of compounds having acetolactate as an upstream intermediate benefit from the increased conversion of pruvate to acetolactate in the described strains.

Abstract: A fluoropolymer coated film comprising polymeric substrate film and fluoropolymer coating on the polymeric substrate film. The fluoropolymer coating comprises fluoropolymer selected from homopolymers and copolymers of vinyl fluoride and homopolymers and copolymers of vinylidene fluoride polymer blended with compatible adhesive polymer comprising functional groups selected from carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid, aziridine, anhydride, amine, isocyanate, melamine, epoxy, hydroxy, anhydride and mixtures thereof. The polymeric substrate film comprises functional groups on its surface that interact with the compatible adhesive polymer to promote bonding of the fluoropolymer coating to the substrate film.
Abstract: A pedicular percutaneous minimally invasive screw for use in connection with progressive cannulae which allows screws to be installed in a patient without necessarily cutting or destroying ligaments and muscles, the progressive cannulae going from larger to smaller diameters until the point where a perforation is made, through which the pedicular percutaneous screw enters, guided by a fine filament which precisely positions the screw in the location desired. Adjacent screws are connected via a connection bar that unites the two screws and fixes the bones of a patient's column, wherein the connecting bar is attached to the screw by a compression screw, which is threaded on the body itself.
