Abstract: The present invention provides several methods for biological production of para-hydroxycinnamic acid (PHCA). The invention is also directed to the discovery of new fungi and bacteria that possess the ability to convert cinnamate to PHCA. The invention relates to developing of a new biocatalyst for conversion of glucose to PHCA by incorporation of the wild type PAL from the yeast Rhodotorula glutinis into E. coli underlining the ability of the wildtype PAL to convert tyrosine to PHCA. The invention is also directed to developing a new biocatalyst for conversion of glucose to PHCA by incorporation of the wildtype PAL from the yeast Rhodotorula glutinis plus the plant cytochrome P-450 and the cytochrome P-450 reductase into E. coli. In yet another embodiment, the present invention provides for the developing of a new biocatalyst through mutagenesis of the wild type yeast PAL which possesses enhanced tyrosine ammonia-lyase (TAL) activity.

Abstract: Processes for the polymerization of olefins in which late transition metal complexes, such as nickel, iron, cobalt and palladium complexes, are used as a polymerization catalyst have improved polymer productivity when oxidizing agents are present during at least a portion of the polymerization. The polymers produced are useful as elastomers, for packaging films, and molding resins.

Abstract: The invention is a method of bonding a ceramic part to a metal part by heating a component assembly comprised of the metal part, the ceramic part, and a very thin essentially pure interlayer material of a compatible interlayer material placed between the two parts and heated at a temperature that is greater than the temperature of the eutectic formed between the metal part and the metal interlayer material, but that is less than the melting point of either the interlayer material, the ceramic part or the metal part. The component assembly is held in intimate contact at temperature in a non-reactive atmosphere for a sufficient time to develop a homogeneous and strong bond between the ceramic part and the metal part. The bonded component assembly is optionally treated with acid to remove any residual free nickel and nickel salts, to assure a biocompatible component assembly for implantation in living tissue.

Abstract: This invention concerns a test apparatus and procedure used for quantitative and qualitative characterization of scratch and mar behavior of films or coatings, more particularly automotive coatings. Abstract: Systems and methods for producing thin film transistor structures useful in controlling electronic displays. Thin film transistors are fabricated using all-additive methods including printing techniques, soft lithography and material deposition methods. The thin film transistors can be deposited with the gate on the bottom or on the top of the structure. The deposition methods include the possibility of isolating nearly completely the transistor structure from the electronic display devices, so as to minimize or eliminate deleterious interactions therebetween.

Abstract: A holder for a roll of disposable towels has a base and an upstanding member extending upwardly from the base to be inserted into the hollow core of a roll of disposable towels. A suction cup is held to the underside of the base for holding the base securely to a surface such as a counter top upon removal of the towels from the roll. The suction cup is secured within a recess of the base by a washer held within the recess, and has upstanding portions engaging the underside of the base to enable the suction cup to be depressed by movement of the holder downwardly. In preferred form, the base and upstanding member are made from wood.
Abstract: A computer based browsing computer program product, system and method arranges a set of information hosted on a computer into a book or a set of books, where each book includes a subset of the set of information, labels each book with a respective portion of the subset of the set of information, and selects a book from the set of books. Selecting the book from the set of books includes steps of displaying the respective portions of the books as a book document image that includes pages which correspond to the respective portions of the books, generating a command for moving through the pages, displaying an animated image of the pages of the book document being at least one of flipped, scrolled, slid and flashed images, and selecting the book when a selected one of the pages containing a selection portion of the book is earlier displayed.
Abstract: The present invention provides an implantable substrate sensor comprising electronic circuitry formed within, or on, a substrate. A protective coating then covers the substrate, forming a hermetically sealed package having the circuitry under the coating. The circuitry has electrically conductive pads for communicating and/or providing power to the circuitry. Electrical pathways provide hermetic electrical connection to the conductive pads for external connection to the sealed circuitry. In a first embodiment, the pathway is a via that is made from a biocompatible material that is made hermetic by either increasing its thickness or by ion beam deposition.

Abstract: A decomposition device and a method for decomposing gases with soot or other harmful substances has a processing station using dielectrically hindered discharge. The device has at least two electrodes, one of which is a porous and gas permeable electrode. In order to decompose the gas containing harmful substances, the gas is first introduced into a processing station in which the gas is subjected to plasma processing involving an alternate voltage supply, and from which the gas is let out. The gas is introduced through one end of the processing station formed by the two electrodes.

The sprayable powder is preferably free of water immiscible liquid, and more preferably free of halocarbon liquid. Included among the other components are inorganic fillers, pigments, high temperature resistant polymer binders. In another embodiment, the invention provides for a sprayable powder comprising friable granules of agglomerated primary particles of a first non-fibrillatable fluoropolymer and at least one other non-fibrillatable component. The invention further provides for a process for preparing the sprayable powder by spray drying a liquid dispersion. In a preferred embodiment, the process includes densifying the granules of agglomerated primary particles that result from spray drying.
