  • Patent number: 6513384
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for measuring the lift of a transport infrastructure road level and industrial floors. The apparatus comprises a wheel borne by a chassis pivotally mounted on a trailer towed by a vehicle. An unbalanced member causes the wheel to vibrate. The vertical acceleration of the chassis and of the wheel and the angle of the centrifugal force of the unbalanced member with the vertical, are continuously measured. The total force applied by the wheel, the chassis and the unbalanced member is calculated from the measurements of the accelerations, as is the deflection of the road level by double integration of the acceleration of the wheel.

  • Patent number: 6512383
Abstract: A system and method for measuring the alternating current series resistance of a conductor when transporting large currents on the order of several thousand amperes. The system comprises a current sensor, a current/voltage converter, a voltage divider, a voltage sensor, a null indicator, and a voltage meter. The alternating current series resistance is measured by measuring a real component of a voltage drop over a predetermined length of the conductor, deriving a measurement current from the conductor, converting the measurement current into a measurement voltage, withdrawing an adjustable portion of voltage from the measurement voltage, comparing the adjustable portion of voltage with the voltage drop, adjusting the adjustable portion of voltage to balance the voltage drop, measuring the alternating current, and determining the resistance of the conductor as a function of the value of the adjustable portion of voltage that balances the voltage drop and the measured alternating current.

  • Patent number: 6511108
Abstract: A tote bin seal for securing sheet material lids via aligned lid apertures includes a flange forming an ID flag attached to a locking device having a hollow core body at one body end and two semi-circular arrays of tangs at the other body end, the tangs formed of stems and reverse hooks or barbs. The body is somewhat oval with a rectangular central portion, the tangs depending from each arcuate end of the oval. Each of the tangs and the body have an interior axially extending triangular stiffening rib. An insert with a head and a bifurcated shank is attached to the flange opposite the body and may be sheared from the flange for insertion into the body core. The shank forms a locking opening which captures a web in the body core for securing the insert locked to the body. The insert prevents the tangs from compressing inwardly to open the seal. The flange has a living hinge so it can be folded over to permit reading ID data from the flange in stacked bins.

  • Patent number: 6511052
Abstract: Water vapor is introduced into an inlet air stream (16) of an engine (12), for example, by a pervaporation process through a non-porous hydrophilic membrane (18). A water reservoir (20), which can contain contaminated water, provides a vapor pressure gradient across the hydrophilic membrane (18) into the inlet air stream (16), while the rate of delivery of the water vapor to a cylinder (38-40) is self-regulated by the rate of flow of air across the membrane. The hydrophilic membrane (18) therefore also filters the water from the water reservoir (20) to an extent that pure water vapor is provided to the air inlet stream (16). Delivery of water vapor can nevertheless be controlled using a hood (26) that slides over the hydrophilic membrane to limit its exposed surface area.

  • Patent number: 6511809
Abstract: A process is disclosed for the detection of an analyte utilizing a nucleic acid label as a reporter. The analyte is detected by the binding of at least two reporter conjugates, each conjugate comprising a member of a binding pair and a nucleic acid label. The binding of the reporter conjugates to the analyte facilitates the juxtaposition of the nucleic acid labels, forming a single nucleic acid amplicon. The amplicon may then be detected directly, or may be used as a template of the generation of amplification products. Detection of the analyte by this process significantly reduces assay background caused by non-specific reporter conjugate binding.
