Patent number: 6499535Abstract: A temperature control unit for independent control of a number of independent channels, as can exist with a cluster tool used for semiconductor fabrication, has high efficiency, long term life and reliability, and requires only a small floor area. To these ends, the unit employs a single high capacity refrigeration system and disposes a number of separate temperature control channels for the individual tools, with only some channels receiving refrigerant. Low temperature channels use high pressure, sub-cooled refrigerant for chilling the heat transfer fluid to selected levels controlled by proportional valves adjusting refrigerant flow through evaporator heat exchanger units which cool heat transfer fluid. Moderate temperature channels cool the heat transfer fluid for associated tools to an ambient temperature level.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2001Date of Patent: December 31, 2002Assignee: B/E AerospaceInventor: Kenneth W. Patent number: 6501427Abstract: A patch antenna is composed of a segmented patch and MEMS switches which are built on a substrate. The patch segments of the segmented patch can be electrically connected to each other by the MEMS switches to form a contiguous patch and optional tuning strips and to connect or block RF between the contiguous patch and the optional tuning strips. When RF is connected between the tuning strips and the contiguous patch, the tuning strips increase the effective length of the contiguous patch and lower the antenna's resonant frequency, thereby allowing the antenna to be frequency tuned electrically over a relatively broadband of frequencies. When the tuning strips are connected to the patch in other than a symmetrical pattern, the antenna pattern of the antenna can be changed. In another aspect of the invention, the optional tuning strips are continuous structures that are formed by connecting patch segments using switches.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2001Date of Patent: December 31, 2002Assignee: e-Tenna CorporationInventors: James D. Patent number: 6499670Abstract: A directional control valve having three positions controls the direction of flow through an asphalt distributor. The directional control valve is interposed between a pump and a feed line assembly to a spray bar. The directional control valve has a first position in which flow is recirculated through the pump, a second position in which flow is delivered to the spray bar and a third position providing for handspray and transfer operations. A pressure relief valve is provided for controlling return flow of asphalt from the spray bar to the tank. The pressure relief valve is open in spray bar circulation mode and is closed during a spraying mode. According to the preferred embodiment the directional valve and pressure relief valve are contained within a modular control valve assembly. The directional control valve eliminates the need to reverse the flow in one of the individual feed lines and feed line assembly connecting the modular control valve assembly to the spray bar.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1999Date of Patent: December 31, 2002Assignee: E. Patent number: 6498043Abstract: An implantable substrate sensor has electronic circuitry and electrodes formed on opposite sides of a substrate. A protective coating covers the substrate, effectively hermetically sealing the electronic circuitry under the coating. Exposed areas of the electrodes are selectively left uncovered by the protective coating, thereby allowing such electrodes to be exposed to body tissue and fluids when the sensor is implanted in living tissue. The substrate on which the electronic circuitry and electrodes are formed is the same substrate or “chip” on which an integrated circuit (IC) is formed, which integrated circuit contains the desired electronic circuitry. Such approach eliminates the need for an hermetically sealed lid or cover to cover hybrid electronic circuitry, and allows the sensor to be made much thinner than would otherwise be possible. In one embodiment, two such substrate sensors may be placed back-to-back, with the electrodes facing outward.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 2000Date of Patent: December 24, 2002Assignee: Alfred E. Patent number: 6498046Abstract: An infrared thermographic technique for rapid parallel screening of compositional arrays of potential chemical sensor materials has been developed. The technique involves applying a voltage bias and the associated current to the sample array during screening. The thermographic response is amplified by the resistance change that occurs with gas adsorption, and is directly monitored as the temperature change associated with I2R heating. This technique can also be used to determine n- or p-type character for the semiconductor in question.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 2001Date of Patent: December 24, 2002Assignee: E.
