Abstract: A process that can be used to produce an acid anhydride or acid chloride is provided. The process comprises contacting a reaction medium with a catalyst. The reaction medium comprises at least one organic acid, combination of the organic acid and phosgene, combination of at least one organic anhydride and phosgene, or combinations of the organic acid, the organic anhydride, and phosgene. The reaction medium can further comprise a solvent. The catalyst is a Group IVB transition metal halide.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to low VOC curable coating compositions suitable for use in various mar and etch resistant coatings, such as in automotive coatings. The binder of the composition includes silicon/hydroxyl and cross-linking components. The silicon/hydroxyl component includes one or more reactive oligomers having linear or branched cycloaliphatic moiety and at least two functional groups with at least one being a silane or silicate group, the remaining being a hydroxyl group. Applicants have unexpectedly discovered that by including silane or silicate functionalities in these reactive oligomers, the solids level of the composition can be significantly increased at reduced composition viscosities. As a result, such high solids low VOC compositions can be readily applied by conventional application means, such as by spraying.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for producing calcium fluoride. The process comprises (a) mixing phosphate rock with aqueous H2SiF6 at ambient temperature for at least one hour; (b) nucleating the calcium fluoride in the slurry prepared in step (a) by reacting the slurry at a temperature and for a time sufficient to initiate and sustain nucleation of calcium fluoride and SiO2 by-product; (c) aggregating the SiO2 by-product by heating the slurry produced in step (b) at a temperature of about 90° C. to about 105° C. for at least 0.5 hours; and (d) recovering a calcium fluoride-containing product of an average particle size of less than 1 micron.

Abstract: This invention relates to isolated nucleic acid fragments encoding all or a substantial portion of a corn pullulanase. The invention also relates to the construction of chimeric genes encoding all or a portion of a corn pullulanase, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of corn pullulanase in a transformed host cell.
Abstract: A new polypropylene terephthalate composition is provided. The polypropylene terephthalate is comprised of 1,3-propanediol and terephthalate. The 1,3-propanediol is produced by the bioconversion of a fermentatble carbon source, preferable glucose. The resulting polypropylene terephthalate is distinguished from petrochemically produced polymer on the basis of dual carbon-isotopic fingerprinting which indicates both the source and the age of the carbon.

Abstract: This invention relates to the isolation of nucleic acid fragments from Pseudomonas sp. strain G-179 that encode periplasmic nitrate reductase and nitric oxide reductase enzymes. The enzymes are useful in denitrification reactions and for the identification of other denitrifying bacteria. In addition, this invention also relates to the construction of chimeric genes encoding all or a substantial portion of a bacterial nitric oxide reductase or a bacterial periplasmic nitrate reductase enzymes, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein the expression of the chimeric genes results in production of altered levels of the nitric oxide reductase or periplasmic nitrate reductase in a transformed host cell.
