  • Patent number: 5651078
Abstract: An encoding method and apparatus for conditioning video signal to reduce contouring in images reproduced from compressed video signal involves preconditioning the video signal, prior to completion of compression, to effectively amplify noise in portions of the video signal representing relatively smooth image areas. In an exemplary embodiment, a memory is programmed at respective address locations to remap amplitude values of a digitized signal applied as addresses to the memory. The programming is arranged to enlarge a range of lower amplitude values, and to effectively pass higher amplitude values unaltered.

  • Patent number: 5649535
Abstract: A blood pressure measuring system includes a transducer having first and second sensors adapted to be mounted above the artery of a patient with the second sensor more distal relative to the direction of blood flow than the first sensor. A processor digitizes the signals from the first and second sensors and determines when the second signal is phase shifted about 90 degrees relative to the first signal for determining the occurrence of the Korotkoff sound. The transducer comprises a film of a material having piezoelectric properties and at least two spaced apart electrodes on one surface of the film and a third electrode on the opposite side and opposed to the two electrodes.

  • Patent number: 5650561
Abstract: An improvement on locomotive bubble-type fuel level measuring systems tests or monitors the integrity of the bubble-type pneumatic system by observing the rate of bubble formation, in addition to gauging fuel level. A bubble-type fuel level detection system bubbles a volume of air through a bubble tube. As air exits from the bottom of the tube, bubbles form in the fuel. These bubbles cause small variations in back-pressure in the tube as each bubble grows in size and eventually breaks free from the opening in the tube. The frequency these variations is proportional to the airflow or bubble rate at the bottom of the bubble tube such that pneumatic leaks or other problems can be detected by declaring a problem condition if the bubble rate falls below a predetermined threshold.

  • Patent number: 5650774
Abstract: A remote control access system which may be in the form of a security system or a convenience system for buildings and vehicles to thereby enable access opening and closing of buildings and vehicles. The system is operable on a remote control basis and comprises one or more hand held remote transmitters and a receiver unit located at or near the building or in the vehicle. The receiver is operable in conjunction with a control unit which contains a microprocessor capable of performing control functions and decoding functions. The remote control access system is unique in that it enables the user to electronically program into or delete from the receiver a digital code or so-called encoding signal from any of a plurality of transmitters. Each transmitter may contain not only different numbers of digital codes, but also a code generated by an entirely different method of encoding.

  • Patent number: 5648953
Abstract: A sub-que code (Q subcode) data read circuit for a compact disc reproduction apparatus is capable of converting sub-que code data of serial bits output from the compact disc-digital signal processor of a CD-ROM drive into parallel bytes and adjusting positions of bits in the parallel bytes, thereby enabling a microcomputer to read the sub-que code data through the sub-que code data read circuit without directly reading the data. Accordingly, the load of the microcomputer can be reduced, thereby enabling data processing at a high speed. In particular, the program used in the microcomputer can be simplified so that the CD-ROM drive can reproduce data at a high speed.

  • Patent number: 5648703
Abstract: A deflection waveform correction signal generator comprises a parabolic shaped signal generator and first and second sawtooth shaped waveform generators. The first horizontal frequency sawtooth shaped waveform is generated by a clipped retrace pulse. The first sawtooth generator has an output coupled to an integrating circuit for generating a parabolic shaped signal. The sawtooth generator and sawtooth waveform integrator are reset at a horizontal rate by reset pulses of differing duration. The different duration of reset pulses results in the parabolic signal having regions of non-parabolic shape. A control loop is coupled to the integrator and measures and maintains a pulse duration generated responsive to the parabolic signal. A control current is generated responsive to the pulse duration and is coupled to the integrator input to cause the parabolic shaped signal to be generated at a predetermined time interval.

  • Patent number: 5646750
Abstract: A method and system for compressing video in a manner characteristic of photographic film compression. One embodiment of the invention is a video camera including circuitry for compressing the raw video signals generated thereby to introduce film-like compression characteristics thereto. Such video camera preferably includes controls allowing smooth, gradual, film-like compression of video image data recorded thereby, in response to user variation of no more than a small number of compression parameters. In other embodiments, the invention is a video post-production editing system which performs film-like compression on an analog or digital video signal. Such compression can be performed to match the dynamic range of a first, film-derived video segment to that of a second, non-film-derived video segment. Preferably, the invention implements film-like compression digitally, by employing digital circuitry.
