Abstract: A method is provided for forming a substantially uniaxially-oriented, high content cellulose nanocrystal film. The method includes providing a plant-biomass-based suspension of cellulose nanocrystals and altering the pH of the cellulose nanocrystals to a substantially neutral pH. The suspension is sheared at a shearing rate. The method further includes orienting the cellulose nanocrystals in a substantially axial direction and removing water from the sheared cellulose nanocrystal suspension. As a result, a substantially uniaxially-oriented cellulose nanocrystal film is formed.

Abstract: A character input apparatus comprises a display unit configured to display a graphic zone that displays multiple character groups including one or more characters and a touch zone that senses a touch of an input mean; a display control unit configured to select any one of the multiple character groups depending on a touch type of the input mean sensed by the touch zone and display the selected character at a predetermined position of the graphic zone; and an input unit configured to set the character displayed at the predetermined position of the graphic zone for a predetermined time as an input character. The display control unit selects a character moved to be closest to the predetermined position when the characters displayed on the graphic zone are moved in a sliding direction of the input mean and displays the selected character at the predetermined position of the graphic zone.

Abstract: A computer architecture allows for simplified exception handling by restarting the program after exceptions at the beginning of idempotent regions, the idempotent regions allowing re-execution without the need for restoring complex state information from checkpoints. Recovery from mis-speculation may be provided by a similar mechanism but using smaller idempotent regions reflecting a more frequent occurrence of mis-speculation. A compiler generating different idempotent regions for speculation and exception handling is also disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and device for storing data in a flash memory using address mapping for supporting various block sizes. A storage device determines the size of a block that a host system uses on the basis of the size of data that the host system requests and uses the determined block size as a mapping unit. Additionally, the storage device divides a logical address space into at least one area, and maps an address using the minimum units of different mappings in each divided area.

Abstract: The present invention provides devices and associated methods to facilitate multiplexed staining on a slide. The use of multiplexed staining on a single slide allows for more accurate disease diagnosis while also conserving sample. A PDMS based cytology overlay was created that is capable of coupling on-chip morphological, cytochemical, and immunological staining. Morphological and cytochemical staining of blood smears, along with immunostaining of lymph node imprints, was carried out to demonstrate the application of this microfluidic cytology chip (?CC) device.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a storage device that uses a flash memory that performs power loss recovery, and to a method of power loss recovery by using the storage device using the flash memory. The storage device stores change information on metadata in physical pages in which one or more logical pages are compressed and stored. The change information on the metadata is information representing how the metadata is changed in association with data in the one or more logical pages. The storage device may synchronize the metadata in the flash memory and recover the metadata by applying the change information on the metadata to the synchronized metadata when a power supply is disrupted.

Abstract: A polymerizable unit that yields an electrochemically responsive polymer (advantageously pyrrole) is anchored by polymerization within a polycaprolactone matrix to form an electroactive scaffold upon which cells can be cultured and in which the micro- and nano-topological features of the polycaprolactone matrix are preserved. A scaffold manufactured in accordance with the preferred embodiment can support Schwann cells, which produce nerve growth factor when electrically stimulated. Nerve growth factor has been demonstrated to promote the regeneration of nerve tissue. By implanting the scaffold on which Schwann cells have been cultured into damaged nerve tissue and applying a voltage across the scaffold, nerve growth factor is produced, thereby promoting repair of the damaged nerve tissue.

Abstract: The ARS offers tracking, estimation of position, orientation and full articulation of the human body from marker-less visual observations obtained by a camera, for example an RGBD camera. An ARS may provide hypotheses of the 3D configuration of body parts or the entire body from a single depth frame. The ARS may also propagates estimations of the 3D configuration of body parts and the body by mapping or comparing data from the previous frame and the current frame. The ARS may further compare the estimations and the hypotheses to provide a solution for the current frame. An ARS may select, merge, refine, and/or otherwise combine data from the estimations and the hypotheses to provide a final estimation corresponding to the 3D skeletal data and may apply the final estimation data to capture parameters associated with a moving or still body.

Abstract: An audio metadata providing apparatus and method and a multichannel audio data playback apparatus and method to support a dynamic format conversion are provided. Dynamic format conversion information may include information about a plurality of format conversion schemes that are used to convert a first format set by an author of multichannel audio data into a second format that is based on a playback environment of the multichannel audio data and that are each set for corresponding playback periods of the multichannel audio data. The audio metadata providing apparatus may provide audio metadata including the dynamic format conversion information. The multichannel audio data playback apparatus may identify the dynamic format conversion information from the audio metadata, may convert the first format of the multichannel audio data into the second format based on the identified dynamic format conversion information, and may play back the multichannel audio data in the second format.

Abstract: A processor-implemented method for regulating the flow rate of data packets in a network, including defining a global constant representing a regularly repeating time period common among flow sources in the network; transmitting current flow rate information from each of the flow sources, and for each flow, to the links traversed by each flow, exactly once during a current period; categorizing each of the flows passing through the links on the network into a category for the current period for each link by comparing the current flow rate information to a previously determined fair-share flow rate for the link; counting, in each link, the flows per category for the current period; determining a current fair-share flow rate for the current period in each link using the results of the categorizing and counting; and providing control instructions to each of the flow sources to regulate the rate of each flow.
