Abstract: Allocation of storage budget in a computer-based distributed storage system is described, where associated computer-based storage nodes have heterogeneous access probabilities. The problem is to allocate a given storage budget across the available computer-based nodes so as to store a unit-size data object (e.g. file) with a higher reliability (e.g. increased probability for the storage budget to be recovered). Efficient algorithms for optimizing over one or more classes of allocations are presented. A basic one-level symmetric allocation is presented, where the storage budget is spread evenly over an appropriately chosen subset of nodes. Furthermore, a two-level symmetric allocation is presented, where the budget is divided into two parts, each spread evenly over a different subset of computer-based storage nodes, such that the amount allocated to each node in the first subset is twice that of the second subset.

Abstract: A non-destructive testing system includes directing guided wave energy to regions of interest in waveguides. Knowing the propagation paths taken by guided wave energy in complex waveguides can be used to intentionally insonify regions of interest. Additionally, knowledge of the propagation direction and location of an energy mode in a waveguide allows the calculation of the path previously taken by the energy mode. This information can be used for signal processing of guided wave inspection systems. The test system can have various sensor configurations including: a single transducer configured to direct or receive guided wave energy along a particular direction, a one-dimensional array or a two dimensional array of transducers. The transducers can operate independently to provide mutual phasing and amplitude adjusting to steer guided wave energy in a waveguide or determine the directionality of guided wave energy received by the sensors.

Abstract: A device that has a device body defining an opening at one end thereof, a storage chamber within the device body for storing multiple doses of a substance therein, and a sliding stopper, sealing engageable with the device body, through which the chamber is filled. The stopper has a body and a flexible portion, which may be in the form of a plurality of flexible members, extending therefrom. The flexible portion or members are movable between first and second positions. In the first position, during filling, the portion or members are substantially laterally extending from the stopper body and engaging the opening of the device body. Accordingly, the axial position of the stopper with respect to the device body is secured during filling of the chamber therethrough. In the second position, after filling, the portion or members are substantially axially-extending from the stopper body and disengaged from the rim or opening of the device body. Accordingly, the stopper is axially slideable through the body.

Abstract: A method and device are provided for purifying and recycling water vapor from a coal drying process. Included are a temperature-lowering and dehumidifying process, a flash distillation stripping process, and a vacuum condensing process. A condensing tower receives a temperature-lowered exhaust gas with high humidity from a cooling tube and a condensed water of 5˜60° C. from a flash distillation tank, allowing the exhaust gas and the condensed water to contact each other in a vapor-liquid reverse manner, to lower the temperature and dehumidify the exhaust gas. The flash distillation tank performs a vacuum flash distillation to the condensing water pumped therein from the condensing tower. Water vapor of 5˜60° C. evaporated through flash distillation in the flash distillation tank enters into the demisting washer to be dehumidified and then is condensed. The condensed water in the vapor condenser is transferred into a recycled water tank. Non-condensable gas is discharged out.
