Abstract: As a result of investigating the optimum conditions of methods for immobilizing proteins that interact with sugar chains onto a substrate, it was revealed that coating the surface of a slide glass with GTMS enables immobilization at a higher S/N ratio than conventionally possible. Moreover, by using a substrate to which a rubber with a number of holes was affixed to form a number of reaction vessels, and further by spotting lectins onto the substrate and washing with PBST, the weak interactions between sugar chains and lectins were successfully detected with improved sensitivity. In addition, by introducing an evanescent excitation-type scanner, it became possible to detect the interactions between lectins and sugar chains without washing away the probe solution.

Abstract: The invention discloses a new interface with non-circular conductance limit aperture(s) useful for effective transmission of non-circular ion beams between stages with different gas pressure. In particular, the invention provides an improved coupling of field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) analyzers of planar or side-to-side geometry to downstream stages such as mass spectrometry or ion mobility spectrometry. In this case, the non-circular aperture is rectangular; other geometries may be optimum in other applications. In the preferred embodiment, the non-circular aperture interface is followed by an electrodynamic ion funnel that may focus wide ion beams of any shape into tight circular beams with virtually no losses. The jet disrupter element of the funnel may also have a non-circular geometry, matching the shape of arriving ion beam. The improved sensitivity of planar FAIMS/MS has been demonstrated in experiments using a non-contiguous elongated aperture but other embodiments (e.g.

Abstract: The invention identifies PD-1 as a receptor for B7-4. B7-4 can inhibit immune cell activation upon binding to an inhibitory receptor on an immune cell. Accordingly, the invention provides agents for modulating PD-1, B7-4, and the interaction between B7-4 and PD-1 in order to modulate a costimulatory or an inhibitory signal in a immune cell resulting in modulation of the immune response.

Abstract: Provided are a method and apparatus for performing a variable point Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT)/Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The apparatus for performing a variable point IFFT includes: an IFFT interpolator generating interpolation data signals having a determined point and interpolating a plurality of interpolation data, the number of which depends on an IFFT operation mode signal into input data; an IFFT operator generating IFFT operation data signals by performing an IFFT operation for the interpolated data signals; an IFFT mode selector selecting and outputting some of the IFFT operation data signals in response to the IFFT operation mode signal so that the selected IFFT operation data have the same number of points as the input data; and a control unit outputting the IFFT operation. Therefore, it is possible to easily compute variably sized IFFT/FFT hardware.

Abstract: Implant devices for intravesical administration and local drug delivery. The device has a body which includes a hollow tube formed of a biocompatible material; at least one reservoir in the tube which contains a drug; and one or more apertures through which the drug can be released. The device is configured for minimally invasive insertion into a body cavity, such as the bladder. The hollow tube may be elastomeric to permit the device to be elastically deformed from its initial shape into an elongated shape for passage through a catheter, where following such passage the device can return to or toward its initial shape to facilitate retention of the device in the body cavity. The body may have a narrow, elongated shape effective to permit insertion of the drug delivery device through a catheter without necessarily deforming the body, yet include flexible projections which effect retention within the body cavity.

Abstract: A temperature fixed-point cell is configured with a crucible composed of carbon and a fixed-point material enclosed in the crucible. The fixed-point material has a peritectic structure of carbon and a carbon compound. A thermometer is calibrated by installing the temperature fixed-point crucible in a furnace, increasing or decreasing the ambient temperature thereof, measuring the temperature of the temperature fixed-point cell with the thermometer, observing the state of temperature change, and using this state of temperature change as a basis for the calibration. This invention is aimed at realizing a fixed point in the temperature range exceeding the copper point and accomplishing great improvement in accuracy in the calibration of radiation thermometers, thermocouples and all thermometers used in high temperature ranges.
